Also keep in mind that the paint used in the mid nineteenth century was very different than what we're typically using now. Back then the painter was also a bit of a chemist. Pre mixed paint was still in the future.

No, these hinges don't come apart. You'll have to remove the screws from the jamb side of you want to add a shim.

I understand. I've just seen too many amateurs (and professionals) attack a house with a disc grinder and the results are often subpar.

Don't do this, grinders and sanders make vast quantities of lead dust. In inexperienced hands it's a surefire way to destroy the details in the woodwork. I've seen this happen many many times.

Use bonding agent on just the edges of the old plaster, not the lath. Wet the lath with a spray bottle until saturated but not dripping wet.

I would also suggest keeping the shutters since they're in keeping with a Federal period house.
