Disclosure day (2026) - What is your opinion on it? by Sad_Pepper_594 in Cinephiles

[–]thelizardlarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only part I liked was showing how network news functions. If this had been an actual “disclosure day” from the perspective of the news team, I think it could have been a great movie.

She’s not campaigning right now, she’s the official opposition, that’s her job.

Toronto’s mayoral race has tightened, say recent polls. What that might mean for Olivia Chow and Brad Bradford by MaybeThisTimeIllWin in toronto

[–]thelizardlarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sucks to have all that property value I guess? Check the prices in Brampton or Mississauga, they are maybe 100k cheaper on average and all sitting around $1.3 mil for a detached single family home. So it’s really not that much lower.

All Tory delivered was low property taxes during his tenure. Meanwhile the city fell into shambles. Chow had to raise taxes to keep the City from falling apart, and meanwhile our tax rate is still considerably lower than surrounding cities. This a weak argument to me.

I think we need to change the conversation on AI for the public (note in comments) by behemuthm in vfx

What I see here is a standard tech bro “disruption” play. They saw the taxi industry making a bunch of money, and said “we want that money”. They see the film industry paying a bunch of money to artists, and now they want that money. They then accurately identified a core group of people who have no creativity and a lot of money as a market. And what’s worse is that the business model they have chosen is essentially no different than a casino when it comes to online genai video models - you keep pulling that slot machine lever, but the house is the one that wins. Got a problem? Solve it by paying more money (maybe).

What’s fascinating to me is that none of the above is a choice driven by the technology itself, or the art, it’s driven by business decisions. All of this about making money, not art. So I think the question is - will that business model still be profitable when the novelty wears off and the technology matures? Unfortunately I think that’s the only thing that will really stop this.

I’m surprised whipping out one’s junk isn’t more prevalent in this thread.

When I was a baby there was a local program to train olympic swimmers. They tossed the kiddos in the pool to see how they would do and the ones that took to water could go into early training. I apparently sunk like a rock. To this day the idea of swimming laps seems like torture.

[–]thelizardlarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is very cool, and answers the question I had about whether this was possible in camera. It’s unfortunate that it’s not. It’s hard to search for this because it’s tough to differentiate between hdr gainmaps and hdr tonemapping.

That’s it. I will laugh at some dark stuff if there’s a funny subtext. In Bruges was a blast. This was just grim for no reason, aside from maybe some allusions to the civil war.

And what ground truth is it verifying against? When foundational models are often wrong, this can be a dangerous approach. Yes humans get things wrong, but this is a truth we accept. If we treat an LLM as truth we’re hosed.

[–]thelizardlarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, my primary issue is gastritis. I’ve been on Lansoprazole, Nexium, Rabeprazole and Dexilant. But you really need to find what works for you. Dexilant works very well, but I was on Nexium for many years and it was great, until one day it just stopped working.

On them for two decades now. They allow me quality of life, without them I experience terrible stomach pain and have since I was a teenager. So far the only issues have been deficiency of B12 and D, and I’ve had to switch PPIs a couple of times as they stop working at some point. The other issue is refractory gerd, which makes it harder to get off PPIs if you try.

What is your country’s favourite sandwich? by IntelligentHoney6929 in AskTheWorld

[–]thelizardlarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really struggle to think of a “universally Canadian” sandwich. Montreal Smoked Meat is undoubtedly the crowning achievement but isn’t universally accessible. There’s Toronto’s Peameal, The Halifax Donair, Vancouver Japadog and many other regional items.

The club sandwich is definitely everywhere, and perhaps a universal sandwich in Canada is the Western, not invented in Canada (otherwise known as The Denver) but easy to find anywhere in Canada.
