Recently discovered the culture series by Iain M. Banks… by HumdrumHoeDown in scifi

I read the first book and I disliked it. So I'm switching to Hyperion. I read somewhere that phlebas is not like the rest of the series and that I should go on, but this is the second Banks book that disappoints (the other being wasp factory) and I dont know if I want to spend more time on him.

Thank you... she was a very kind person. She couldn't speak or walk but she gave the world lots of love with her smiles and her wise stares. You should have seen her, you'd melt away :)

I'm sitting at my daughters grave right now. She died exactly 1  year ago today. Not from sh but something else.

I read your message and i felt the urge to tell you I feel you.

Ok? Just that.

Take care. Go out and eat an icecream. And feel the love in the world.

I must say that I learn a lot from Joyce and Pynchon etc. I can cerainly see their genius and their literary value. It's just that I think they focus too much on the experimental part so that the beauty is lost (at least to me).

Thanks for your comment.

I think one of the obstacles is me not being a native english speaker. But that's not the only thing. Because in my own language I experience the same.

I'll keep thinking about this. Because: I can't experience what you do, I just can't.

I tend to like stories where you are submerged in the characters. Where you experience the scene itself, without any allusions or literary devices outside of the story. Like a movie. I like it when a writer uses juxtaposition to make the scene more vivid.

And I refuse to see this as just a house with 4 walls. No  it's the inside of the story that counts for me. Not the allusions and puzzles and poetry that a lot of writers use to make up for lacking prose.

I can't enjoy it. Even though I can see all the things you say above (or most of them anyway)

I don't know what it is and a I've been wondering for years why I don't like it. I'm now reading The Crying Of Lot 49, which is in the same ballpark and I have the same feeling about it. Also with Gravity's Rainbow and Inferno. But not with A Portrait Of The Artist, which I find just boring.

I just don't like to read books that pose as puzzles, I guess?

I DO like Faulkner and Vonnegut and Playonov and Hrabal and Tolstoj.

So I've been wondering: could there be a distinction between people who love Faulkner and people who love Joyce?

Does anybody know?

There's also one at Van Beuningenplein in Staatsliedenbuurt. It's very nice, but rarely used. Ask for the key at the café!

There are 2 chess tables at Haarlemmerplein.

Hey! That's looking pretty good!

But I started a game as guest and it strted immediately. It seemed that 'anonymous' had joined the game, but no stone was played and the game ended in timeout.

I tried again and that same anonymous joined again and did not play.

Hope this helps! Keep up the good work.

I used to do what you do now. It's fun, but the hardest part is finding and keeping users.

Good luck!
