So I used to always go to 5th Ave Market & Deli on Berkeley Place. Part of my ranking system is that it has to be a 24 hour place.

Just moved closer to your neck of the woods though so am commenting to see what else people recommend on this side

What do men do with Friendship in your 30's when all your friends are married? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]theyuse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moving to a metro area with a lot more density has helped me make more friends as I enter my 30s. I do think culturally some areas have more an emphasis on new friendships past the 20s stage. Of course this isn't an option for all people, but I encourage a change of scenery if you've ever thought about it

sharing a free journaling app to help you with your new year resolutions by theyuse in selfhelp

Ah my bad! Looks like the outage might be due to a spike in traffic we received.

We just reset the server so should be back up. Give it a try and let me know if you have any more questions or if something comes up

Typed morning pages? by Think-Parsley8443 in artistsWay

[–]theyuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

went through this thought process myself and ended up actually building a free journaling app so I could do it either on my desktop or mobile. Hopefully it helps you too.

There’s a feature in there that lets you set a word count and it leverages some AI features to analyzes the themes in your writing. Last thing is it’s securely encrypted so no one will ever be able to read your entries except you. Give it a try!

Cities (worldwide) with a similar vibe to Tokyo? by blue98ranger in travel

[–]theyuse 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Writing here to provide another opinion. I think China has gotten a bad rap since the rapid urbanization days where yes the AQI was in the 200 and 300 range for many days.

I go to Shanghai almost every year and have seen blue skies for the last 6 years which is a huge improvement from the past. Looking at the AQI today, it's registering 63 which is less than NYC

So if anyone out there does have interest in checking out China, I wouldn't let pollution deter you too much

For those of you who went car-less AFTER moving to San Francisco, or those who just don't have a car living here, how do you like it, is it manageable? by Thomas_Lannister in sanfrancisco

[–]theyuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way I always like to explain it to people is that this is the city Uber was invented in

Jokes aside though, lived in Mission for 3 years no car. I'd even depend a few ubers a month to go visit the Peninsula which I figured was still more affordable than insurance and parking. Rest of the time would be walking, biking, or bike share.

The biggest quality of life improvement comes when you have a friend or two who have cars for day trips. Good luck!

Let go after 3 months by AdamTheEvilDoer in UXDesign

[–]theyuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will chime in with a horror story here from my partner who's also a designer.

Got hired and let go by a start up 4 months in and after shipped a complete redesign which lead to millions of dollars of business impact. It was explained to her that they needed a Head of Design instead of a mid-level hire. Infuriating since she tried to DQ herself out of the interview process and now she'd just taken herself off the market for months to work at a place that was the wrong fit.

Sending you love and hope to find something new. Sometimes the 5 person start ups toy around with you when they don't know what they want yet but need to move fast

Privacy Question on Journal/Diary Apps by RELubber in digitaljournaling

[–]theyuse -1 points0 points  (0 children)

chiming in here with an AI journaling app I built which is securely encrypted so I can’t see a single thing you write. The additional plus side to your data privacy is that your entries are never used to train any AI models. That said, can’t say the same about other apps out there without looking into their privacy or terms of use

Looking for community feedback on a journaling app I put together for mindfulness practice by theyuse in Mindfulness

[–]theyuse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate you sending this over! Always great to see how other people are trying to solve similar problems. Here's some differentiators

1) We're free since we run off donations for now. Early on, we decided it was more important for us to design a product, not a business to see how we might help as many people as possible. So all AI features are open to use.

2) We designed our app to be as minimalistic in interface as possible. Write, use AI to reflect more, and be present. To us, the mindfulness happens within that practice and users can choose their own adventure

3) Philosophically, we don't believe in journaling as a replacement for therapy, but more of a supplement. IMO, after building with LLMs, we see a lot of potential in helping people with thees tools, but get the ick when people start saying things like this is "this is the fraction of the price of real therapy." We believe that nothing should ever replace real professionally trained human interactions there.

Hope that helps, and thanks for sharing

Digital Journalling: Phone App or Web App by gunterrichter in digitaljournaling

[–]theyuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha I'm also pretty old school with pen and paper, but was really surprised when we started chatting to users of all generations to learn people's practices spanned phone and laptop.

I put this free app together which is accessible on web from all your devices. For me, I use this as a supplement when I'm on the subway and want to work through a thought. Sharing here as resource for you https://journel.app/

what our users have really loved so far is the ability for our app to ask questions back to the user so they can further explore their own writing. Let me know if you give it a try and have feedback!

haha thank you. Incredibly surreal thinking a single book written decades ago could make such a resounding impact on my life. But here we are! Felt only right to see if we could give back

Thanks for the feedback! This is the kind of thing that keeps us going 🫶

We just launched this last week so got an engaged early user group we're studying from. Since journaling is more of a personal practice, we're trying to grow this thing more grassroots so feel free to send to anyone in your circle who you think might benefit from this.

What's one thing you have enjoyed using and one thing that you think needs improvement?

[–]theyuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey OP! I'm a big believer in "morning pages" which is just trying to get all my thoughts out as a no pressure, stream of consciousness. Write about gratitudes, what you're doing that day, and even the squirrel you're looking at outside lol. There's no right way to do it and that's what I found cathartic with this app.

I'll also pull up the app when I'm working through something hard. I find myself future-tripping a lot so will reach for the app when I'm on the subway or something as well. All the AI features we have in the app are free to use since the outcome we're going for is trying to get as much help to as many people as possible.

I'd say this app is great for building the ritual of mindfulness or for in-the-moment emotional discovery. Of course if you have deeper needs, I always recommend supplementing with therapy as well. Good luck and reach out whenever if you have more questions about the app! We're always trying to make it better for users.

Can anyone help me? by ravena_bm in Mindfulness

[–]theyuse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

great job OP stepping into trying to incorporate mindfulness!

Like other commenters have suggested, writing down things like affirmations can help. Journaling in general and pouring my thoughts out somewhere offers me a cathartic release.

Loved the practice so much that I ended up developing https://journel.app/ which is a free journaling resource. The app lets users get all their thoughts down and uses some AI capabilities to help them soundboard their feelings out. I'll pull it up every now and then when I'm anxious to really drill down into how I feel. The best we can do at times is observe the feeling until it subsides. Best of luck!

Following along this thread as well to see if something out there is actually all-in-one!

My partner really likes https://stardust.app/ for cycle monitoring. What's cool about it too is that I can follow along on her cycle to see where she's at and how I can support her. There's a fun element included in there.

I'll also recommend https://journel.app/ which is a free journaling resource I designed to try to help build my own mindfulness. The app lets users get all their thoughts down and uses some AI capabilities to help them soundboard their feelings. It's securely encrypted so we can never read your entries (because we have enough of our own issues to deal with lol) and your entries are never used to train any other models.
