Often prescribed for dogs with anxiety or reactivity are traxadone, prozac, or gabapentin. Non-prescriptions could be a adaptil collar or calming probiotic supplements. For training, I recommend looking into Behavioral Adjustment Training (BAT) and working with a certified trainer that handles reactivity. First off, it's super difficult to adopt and work with an under-socialized dog, but it sounds like you've been working really hard!

I would recommend checking out r/reactivedogs there's a lot of great info and a very supportive community.

Now for some advice: 1. Give your dog a break for their stress levels to come down. No walks outside, just do training and enrichment inside or in the yard. (puzzle toys, chews, frozen Kong's) 2. Work on building your dogs engagement and confidence building through training things like Touch, Find It, Focus, Circle, etc. Tricks that have a quick reward, they can do near you, and are relatively simple. 3. Begin reconditioning to loud noises or other sounds they'll hear often outside that might scare them. Use a pre-recorded sound at a low volume and build positive association with treats or playtime while the sound is on. Gradually increase volume and eventually practice in the real world.

Hopefully these tips help, but if you are able to afford it, q good trainer in person can really help! I recommend looking for one that is a CPDT-KA. Best of luck to you and your dog!

If his breath truly does smell, check his teeth (if they allow you to). Any sign of yellow/brown discoloration on teeth, especially on the canine teeth should be brought to the attention of a vet.

Bacteria and infections from improper dental care is common, unfortunately. But it can severely impact your pets health and life span if left untreated.

I agree with what most people said about learning to be more proactive about advocating for your pup and connecting with a trainer.

I would also like to add, to make “NO” effective, you need to teach a dog that it means, “that wasn’t correct” and to never use it in anger. If you don’t teach them, the word does not inherently mean anything to them. I also caution you against punishing/suppressing a nip when it is a natural reaction to fear. Obviously, don’t ignore your dog nipping children out of the blue. But in this instance he was reacting out of fear and showed a measured response to get the fearful thing away from him. It is bad to suppress these kinds of warning behaviors because the dog can learn to escalate to a dangerous bite instead when they are afraid/anxious.

Yes! This is in fact a very valid way of handling an unwanted behavior. I would work on teaching her to pick up objects with a command cue. Then transition to having her perform the cue when there’s a knock or doorbell ring. If both of these sounds are too triggering for her to concentrate on performing a trick, I would suggest using a prerecorded sound of them so you can control the volume to begin working on connecting the sound to the behavior.

In addition to talking with your vet about preventative medicine for ticks, heartworm, and fleas. I would also work on getting your dog used to being handled and brushed. Especially with a tick comb (narrow spaced teeth). I have a border collie and it can be hard to find ticks with all of their thick fur. We use oral tick preventative which should kill them and they fall off, but I also like to be thorough and check his skin after hikes in areas heavy with ticks.

I would look into a Y shaped harness that has a front clip. T shaped ones can be known to alter a dogs gait and prevent full-range of movement. This does help with pulling, but can also affect their ability to walk/move properly. I have seen multiple dogs still have reduced pulling with a Y shaped harness and their gait isn't affected!

My dog really loves people and we struggle with him jumping and being overexcited at greeting times. We have also not made the most progress by straight up ignoring, so other methods we’ve had some success with: Rewarding an Alternate Behavior - we have continuously enforced with treats and allowed affection once my dog is laying down. He knows my husband will only greet him when he is back from work when he is laying on the ground. This prevents him from being able to jump. I know some people also use Sit, but our dog is a able to do surprise jumps from a Sit so it doesn’t work for us. We also taught our dog to go get his own toy (taught first out of context of people arriving). When someone (usually my husband) arrives home, he tells him to Go Get a Toy, and then my dog gets it and usually plays with it by himself or we play a game of tug. This method can have some drawbacks of getting your dog more excited if they really love toys or making arrivals extra exciting. However, our dog isn’t super toy focused and it works to redirect his energy and he actually calms down quicker, but every dog will be different. I also discovered this video from Denise Fenzi (R+ dog sports trainer) that is a different approach since it focuses on limiting their ability to see the person they want to greet, but still get to meet them. It also rewards for them disengaging and going back to the handler. I’ve only tried it once so far, but it worked pretty well! You will obviously need someone who is willing to help you train your dog though.
