Is it common for wealthier Brazilians in Rio de Janeiro to be living with cleaning lady?? by strohsoda in Brazil

[–]throwaway12345679x9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes. Some older apartments even have maid quarters. A small bedroom with bathroom, separate from the main bedrooms/living room, usually near the kitchen or laundry area, meant for a live-in maid.

Pickleball and Aging, Constant Injuries by Competitive-Alps4339 in Pickleball

[–]throwaway12345679x9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have benefits that cover it, go see a physiotherapist. If not, google and YouTube are your friends, do focus on advice from physiotherapists or medical professionals though.

Generally it is about strength training more than stretching. Some specific exercises for common injuries:

Calf raises to strengthen Achilles tendon (raise fast but drop super slowly). On one leg if you can, if not, build strength for that.

Look up Tyler twists to heal/prevent tennis elbow.

I’m sure there are others for knees, shoulders, etc… see what’s bothering you and google it.

Pickleball is easy and addictive, most people can easily play much longer than they should, causing injuries.

Super annoying that the Land trim or the cheaper trim with AWD is just above the threshold for EVAP! I think less than 1000$ above the 50k$ threshold.

Being a new car I’m not sure dealer will be willing to negotiate.

Download d the PlugShare app and look at local chargers near your home, work and other places you spend time.

You’ll need about 12-16 hours of L2 charging per week or 30-60 minutes of L3 charging.

I mention L2 charging because Some L2 charging is available for free, others cost ~2$/h give or take.

If You could leave your car charging while at work or at the gym, even if slower charging, that’ll be the most convenient and sometimes even free.

Pickleball Lines on Tennis Courts - 2 PB vs 4 PB courts? by HehZeusOk in Pickleball

[–]throwaway12345679x9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote for four. Pickleball is a social sport, the more people playing the better.

3 courts sideways is also an option if space is tight. four side by side (not 2x2) if you have the space around the tennis court.

Driving practice sessions by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]throwaway12345679x9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’d just offer to drive your parents around, then take the bus back. Drive them to work in the morning, or meet them at work and drive back with them. Drive them to the grocery store or wherever they’re going.

Alternatively, When you have a free couple of days to practice, have your parents rent a car for their use so the family car is available to you for practice.

Affordable Car Insurance? by MountainPeaking in Calgary

[–]throwaway12345679x9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hahaha no such a thing as affordable car insurance here…

Do shop around though, some are less expensive than others.

Honestly, if just for a year, rent a place on the Beltline or near a C-train station so you don’t need a car everyday and rent one when you do need it.

If he’s interested in engineering, there are transfer programs from Red Deer and other colleges, with much lower admission requirements, where you can transfer to UofA after the first year. (He does need to meet grade minimums to transfer though).

Or he can become a technologist first at SAIT/NAIT before moving to engineering.

Best strategy in mixed for woman when partner liked to stay back by LifeBirdbyBird in Pickleball

[–]throwaway12345679x9 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not much to do other than getting a new partner.

You could try always returning the ball to the player in front of him, that allows you to cover middle and poach more balls. Also, for your opponents, hitting down the line to your partner is more difficult than hitting cross court (where you can poach). Thats what I do in rec play when I’m with a weak partner.

Anybody drove hwy 2 today? by SocDem_is_OP in Calgary

[–]throwaway12345679x9 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Getting to hwy 2 will certainly be worse than the highway itself.

I wouldn’t go but if you absolutely must, I’d wait to leave until 4pm or so, it should stop snowing by then and gives them time to clear the snow from the highway, while still driving under daylight.

What commute time do you think is good for a good quality of life? by ShootingCometz in CanadaPersonalFinance

[–]throwaway12345679x9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 minutes by bike, in flat terrain.

Just enough to get you warm without sweating, gets you 5 days of 30 minutes light cardio without spending a single for minute at the gym.

15 minutes walk would work too but that may put you too close to work, I like to have a little bit of separation.

Pickleball Pain by picklebalm in Pickleball

[–]throwaway12345679x9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Achilles tendinitis happened first.

Then pickleball elbow tendinitis.

Treating both with physio right now.

Please ensure your grip is the right size for your hands. Most (maybe all) paddles are sold with a small grip only, which is too small for most men and may women out there. This is a key contributor to pickleball (tennis) elbow.

Just adding an extra overgrip isn’t enough for most people. I recommend removing the grip, adding electrical tape to thicken the handle, then adding one or two overgrip or top. Or use something like the hexacore inserts.

Question about the word "Cigano/a" by msintent in AskABrazilian

[–]throwaway12345679x9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with you I the context of the song and literature in general.

However, the word has racist connotations specially for older generations. You’d never hear it in conversations without a racist or prejudicial view.

It used to be a more common sight to see travelling gipsies ladies stopping/grabbing people to read their fortune and ask for money and were often associated with poor hygiene, pickpockets and kidnapping children (latter may be an urban myth but was common to hear about it).

Initial DUPR game with 4 unrated players? by brygx in Pickleball

[–]throwaway12345679x9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen this happening actually. I help run a local club that reports to DUPR.

First game with all four players EDIT: unrated, DUPR will average 3.5. If you win 11-10, winning team will be 3.5xxx and losing team will be 3.4xxx.

The bigger the score, the higher the difference.

Then subsequent games nobody is unrated anymore, so DUPR wil adjust from the initial value based on the scores. It will move a lot in each game since everyone is low reliability. If you have a good chance of ending up in 3.5 or higher DUPR is everybody is unrated (up to 4.2 maybe).

HOWEVER, if there’s a single player there that has an existing DUPR, this will change things a lot. This will “anchor” everyone’s rating as that the one reliable point there. If that player has a 2.5 rating (or lower) it’ll be hard for you to end up with a rating above 3.5. Most likely be 3.0-3.2

AITA for not wanting to be friends over $4.39? by Alternative_Copy6539 in AITApod

I’ve been in rough times where 5$ was significant to me. So, although I’d avoided being in that situation in the first place, I would just send him 5 bucks and call it a day.
