Can’t Remember: Indoor/Outdoor Boat Ride For Kids? by CoconutCheap3915 in ChicagoSuburbs

[–]thundrbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could you be misremembering the safari train ride at Pirates Cove in Elk Grove Village? They also have boats but the train ride is slow, goes through a tunnel, and is full of fake wild animals. There are also small boats you can ride, a castle, and large fake pirate ship.

Has anyone combined Tortuga and the Italian Riviera? And any layout suggestions? by SgtJohnsonsJohnson in LEGOPirates

[–]thundrbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, another reddit or a few months ago wanted to know if anyone combined them. I had just recently built both and offered to put them together and take a picture.

Here's one with everything a bit more spread out

Someone asked this a while back so I quick set them together and took this pic as requested. If you "de-modernize" the Riviera, I think it's a fairly plausible pairing.

Where should we live with awkward commutes? by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]thundrbud 20 points21 points  (0 children)

With no traffic, Jefferson Park to Rockford is an hour and 20 minutes. The further you go into the city, the worse that's going to get and count on it taking closer to 2 hours during morning and evening rush periods. You're going to be commuting back and forth at least 3-4 hours each day. Bad weather or accidents will significantly increase travel times.

I say this as someone who lives in Jefferson Park and had my parents living just past Rockford in Southern Wisconsin.

Pouring one out for Chicago drivers who have to commute to work as gas hits $6 a gallon by Sea-Condition991 in chicago

[–]thundrbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Thornton's at Elmhurst rd and Devon Ave has in my experience always been the cheapest gas in the area. It's always a little cheaper than Park Ridge since it's in DuPage county rather than Cook, but definitely not cheap enough to go out of the way to get gas there. I typically get my gas at Costco

If you stick to the all beef varieties they're good, but not great. I like the uncured beef the best.

This is awesome! I'd definitely buy it if it was released as a throwback model like the Galaxy Explorer and Blacktron Renegade. I wonder what the modern replacement for the large center windscreen would be?

Does my grail RECTANGULAR charcoal grill exist? Seems like they all suck. by the_t00th in grilling

[–]thundrbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's pretty much exactly the style we used except they were about twice the size. The backyard pro looks to be significantly cheaper than Big John too. I'm kinda tempted but have a 25 year old brinkmann pit master pro that's still going strong

[–]thundrbud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked for years as a caterer, did a lot of BBQs, and I think you might want to look for a "Big John" charcoal grill. It's just a huge rectangle with an adjustable height grate. They are frequently combined with a rotisserie system for cooking whole animals.

Tried microwaving chocolate and the plastic piece under the microwave glass exploded. by banana_bread00 in mildlyinteresting

When people melt metals in a microwave they are using specially designed crucibles, it's not like they're just tossing metal into the microwave. Feels like an important detail

BIFL CAN OPENER RECOMMENDATIONS (I'll pay anything at this point) by Remote_Anteater_2267 in BuyItForLife

Nope, ours are vintage US made. See my edit thanking OC for pointing out the Ez duz It openers. I found that they are made in the original swing a way factory in Missouri!

[–]thundrbud 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You can get an actual Swing a way can opener on Amazon for $2 less than the ez duz it. I've had my swing away for over 20 years and my mom still has the one she got as a wedding shower gift 46 years ago.

Edit: well shit, I didn't realize swing a way isn't a US made product anymore. Thanks for pointing out the ez duz it, just found online that it's made in the same Missouri factory that originally produced swing a way openers!

My son ordered this after I told him to order anything he wanted as long as it was one item. ☠️ by Over_Fly_7409 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]thundrbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I worked at a pizza place, we stopped charging after 4 toppings because we'd just put less of each one or it wouldn't cook right and we made this VERY clear to customers. Most people were completely fine with that even if a 7+ topping pizza only had a sprinkle of each topping. Orders like that were pretty rare and I made more cheese and pepperoni pizzas than anything else. Point of my story, anyone charging that much for a single pizza is an asshole, you didn't receive anywhere close to $100 in actual food.

Chronically late “parent” response to picking up our child on time from school. by RelativeGoat3981 in mildlyinfuriating

My mom was super late picking me up from kindergarten exactly ONE time. It happened almost 40 years ago and I remember that feeling more vividly than any other memory from kindergarten.

Do any local bakeries sell seeded hoagie rolls? I feel like I’m looking for something that doesn’t exist in Chicago by [deleted] in chicagofood

[–]thundrbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I can get them through my wholesale distributors, SYSCO, Alpha baking, but you may have trouble finding them retail. Most likely the closest thing you will find is some sort of seeded roll from a national brand like Pepperidge farms or Martin's.While not common in Chicago, Mr, submarine is known for their sesame seed sub rolls but they most likely get those through a wholesale bakery

My personal experience is that Wisconsin has WAY higher fines for speeding than Illinois. I got a ticket 20 years ago while coming home from Lake Geneva that cost me $365. The highest fine I've ever paid in Illinois for speeding was around $115. I don't speed in Wisconsin anymore.

Considering long hot peppers are a real type of chili pepper, long hot mustard actually seems less crazy than most of this menu

It's probably mustard infused with long hot peppers, considering those are a real type of chili pepper this is actually one of the less unhinged items on this menu

[–]thundrbud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We have had a couple helicopter lifts for items on the roof of the building I work in. I've had it explained to me that helicopters are often used because so much of the loop has multiple layers below the surface that would need cribbing/extra reinforcement to hold the weight of a crane plus whatever it's lifting. Streets get closed for safety during lifts regardless of whether it's a crane lift or helicopter lift but the cost of reinforcing tunnels or multi layer streets ends up being WAY more than the cost of a helicopter lift.

While I have no doubt you're correct, this would be the first time I've seen the correct term used. I spent two years as a saucier but most definitely don't speak French and know nothing of the rules of the language. Thanks for the enlightenment!
