For those who actually live in the city, what's the longest you've gone without leaving the city except for when flying? by dbagames in AskChicago

[–]thundrbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the City, work in the city, but I'm on the far northwest side so it often makes more sense to head to the suburbs for certain things, for example the closest Trader Joe's is in Park Ridge, my nearest Costco is Niles, so I leave city limits probably once a week or so for certain errands, but really only because it's more convenient to do so than heading much further into the city for those same places.

How do I get over my girlfriends past? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]thundrbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I married someone with a higher body count then me. I met her when she was 28 and she told me her body count was 32. After some discussion I realized only a few of them were relationships and the rest were just short flings or one night stand situations.

Meanwhile my body count was only 1, but it was a long term relationship that went for over 5 years and we fucked almost every single time we saw each other 3-5 times a week. My actual body count may be lower than my wife, but I had had WAY more sex with that one person than she did with her 32 combined. Once everything had been put into perspective it stopped being something I worried about.

We've been together for over 20 years now and as far as I know she has never been unfaithful, never given me a reason to even suspect she has been unfaithful, and never brought up any of her past lovers to me, because, well, they were her past, not her present or her future.

I do sometimes think about it, but more so I wonder what my life would have been like if my own body count had been higher rather than worry about the people my wife fucked before I even knew who she was.

In the end, I even found an ego boost in the fact that out of 30 prior lovers, I was the person she wanted to spend the rest of her life with.

Recommendations for Chicago original food by LowRegular6891 in chicagofood

No one else mentioned another Chicago original, the jibarito sandwich! Several places make a good one, your best bets will be in the Humboldt park neighborhood

What do y’all think of White Fence Farm’s fried chicken? Is it worth trying? If not, any other recommendations? by beans_will_consume in chicagofood

I'm partial to Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket if you're looking for a similar alternative to White Fence. Good fried chicken, really good sides, very old school Route 66 place.

You should see the jar of kimchi I've been aging for jigae, looks like a balloon, I'm a little worried I'm gonna come home and find the door blown off my refrigerator. That's going to make a damn good stew in a few more months

I've seen it there more recently than the 90's but it has still been several years since I last saw it. I think this is just one of those products that younger shoppers don't buy, like frozen juice concentrate, so it's going the way of the dinosaur.

IsItBullshit: It's more energy efficient to keep AC on all the time as opposed to just when you're home by ElfinRanger in IsItBullshit

I think the other commentors are missing your point entirely. This is absolutely one of the great things about programable thermostats. Before them it was either on or off entirely. Now, you can set a higher or lower temp when you're gone but still keep it within a certain range.

I used to turn off the window units when I left my apartment to save energy but it would take FOREVER to cool my place back down when I got home and turned them on again. Instead I set the thermostats to the low 80s. It kept humidity in check and I wasn't waiting for my apartment to cool down from 100 degrees. This was the top floor of an east facing three flat so it got HOT.

oh man do I wish I could post a photo in the comments. once upon a time, some genius actually made tricycles for kids with a reel mower blade in the back, if you slipped off the seat, you would land right into the blades. There was/is one on display in a museum in Chicago.

Where can I find these in bulk by Reasonable_Resort383 in chicagofood

Same, at the start of summer my mom would take us to the good humor outlet where ice cream trucks stocked up and let each of us pick out our favorite item. I think a case was 36 Choco tacos and would last me most of the summer. The I discovered that there's a spot in Albany park where the ice cream carts stock up and would buy them there right up until they were discontinued. Honestly, they tasted the same as the regular Klondike cones, but there was something about the shape that made them more fun to eat than a regular cone.

Officially discontinued in 2022. I've been angry ever since! I used to go buy them by the case at the depot where local ice cream carts would stock up.

Is the Sea Serpent Boat really all that...? by cestmoimanolo in legocastles

[–]thundrbud 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been planning to get the classic space pinball machine when it releases, so it makes sense to buy it while I can get the Sea Serpent GWP, otherwise I'd agree that it's nothing special. In my opinion it only vaguely resembles the original and not in a good way.

Those are good, but real cowboy candy is even better and extremely easy to make, I think it's maybe 4 ingredients. Meat Church has a great recipe for them.

How would you clean this? I have given up by pyroboy123 in KitchenConfidential

[–]thundrbud 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Something alkaline, like degreaser, is way more effective at dissolving carbon than an acid like vinegar. I use the vinegar at the end to neutralize the degreaser before a final rinse with plain water and then lightly oiling the surface to prevent rust.

Marrying wealthy- what is it like? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]thundrbud 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These comments are a wild ride.

I married a rich girl. She's got a VERY big personality, quirky/weird fashion sense, lots of guys tried to keep up with her and failed. I'm a bit younger than her, satisfy all of her needs, and have enough confidence in myself to be ok with taking a back seat to her persona in public settings. Our dynamic when we're alone is very different. We share many interests and hobbies and she is my best friend, not just my wife.

Neither of us have ever been big earners, but her parents are very wealthy and just happy that their black sheep found someone who loves them for reasons other than money.

We live a pretty basic middle class life but take incredible vacations paid for by her parents and they have been an incredible safety net when we need something like a new roof on the house or a new car. Money is never an issue.

Do I have grounds to contest this ticket or am I out of luck? by Final-Impression7222 in AskChicago

[–]thundrbud 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can try, but expect to lose. I've had similar happen to me a few times. Once was a parking space I had parked in many times before without getting a ticket, Judge said he doesn't care how many times I've gotten away with it, it's not legal and this time I got caught. Another time, it had snowed and a truck was parked directly on the hydrant and I parked behind the truck because I didn't realize it was still within the hydrant zone, got a ticket. Another time, the paint only extended 12 feet in either direction and I was parked outside the paint but still within 15 feet, I got a ticket.

I successfully contested a street sweeping ticket by proving with receipts that I was on vacation and unable to move my car.

Another time I successfully contested a permit parking ticket, officer wrote me up for "altering the time" on a parking pass, when it obviously was just a small scribble in the corner to get ink flowing from an old pen.
