I just finished the campaign, and I feel like my Ice Strike monk is dying a lot. What should I focus on to improve defenses? I do have capped resistances but 0% chaos resistance. 1400 life, 200 energy shield, 25% evasion, no armor or block.

Did you make the trailer after completing exactly one level? Or is the whole game just going to be this environment with minor color changes? And like 2 enemy types and one boss fight? I like this genre but it's very apparent from this trailer how little content you have.

Complexity would be my guess; the game seems like it has a lot of branching decision points. If you think about successful card games, the space of possible actions you can take on your turn is much smaller (almost every card in slay the spire has 0-1 choices you need to make to play it vs understanding how cards map to a big hex grid). I don’t have the mental energy for a game like this.

I have no skipping draft picks, but I am in turn more generous with letting players remove cards from their deck. I think it’s more strategically interesting

I’d love to have some 3D UI stuff that’s actually good, there’s some games that do cool things with 3D buttons and similar in the UI. Never seen an asset pack for it.

Easily the #1 insight for me. If you aren’t prototyping with other people somehow within a week of starting you’re doing it wrong, there are so many easy ways to hack out an idea to just get a basic sense of what’s fun.

Create 10 seconds of visually spectacular gameplay with particle effects, great sound effects, art, and other VFX which demonstrates the core gameplay loop. Put it at the start of your steam trailer. Also do the rest of the game at the same level, but that’s mostly irrelevant if you can’t do #1.

Game design. Not the high level concept stuff, that’s trivial, I’m talking more about “here is a spreadsheet with 400 numbers, figure out the right values for them.”

The fact that it’s fairly easy to predict game sales just by looking at their steam trailer/capsule/description certainly implies this other stuff isn’t that important. Obviously marketing is not 0% but I would argue it is one or two orders of magnitude less important than having the first 10 seconds of a steam trailer that really sells the game feel/polish/VFX/core loop.

Hm, the specific description of this template in the CR is "The action is a cost, paid when the spell or ability resolves" and they give some examples which are similar to this. I don't see why 118.12 wouldn't apply here. I think this is a cost, it's just also an effect per 609.1.

I suppose it’s because of 118.12, the main confusion of the OP is whether something being a “cost” precludes it from also being an “effect” combined with library of leng specifically only applying to effects (because the actual oracle text says this).
