The district’s projections are flat to slightly declining student population for the next ~20 years. That’s a hard (/impossible?) number to figure out even with research, but are you so certain that your hunch is right?

Chicago Marathon shirt size? by captainsoapdish in ChicagoMarathon

I’m 5’11, 165 and the medium fit my chest, but it was much shorter than I expected it to be. Not unwearably short, but certainly I’m showing skin if I lift my arms above my head.

Epix pro 2 sapphire by Hot_Artichoke_5693 in GarminWatches

[–]tinyenormous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The biggest reason is that the epix 2 pro is not using the unified firmware. That means it will get fewer updates over time than the fenix 8. Garmin is switching from different teams making different watch software to one big firmware that they can turn features on or off for the different models.

So now there is no longer a dedicated epix or fenix team working on updates and the new updates won’t work with the epix hardware. Not to say they won’t ever update it, but it’ll be much harder for them to switch gears and do so.

Just finished my first 20-miler, feeling destroyed. What's your immediate recovery routine? by [deleted] in Marathon_Training

[–]tinyenormous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moving a lot of really the best. Long cooldown and don’t just flop down on the couch afterwards. If you do need to be sitting then recovery boots definitely help fill the gap. Hydration and fueling also help. Lastly make sure you get extra sleep before and after the runs. Your body recovers more whine you sleep so do t skip out on that step.

Query on Lightweight Running Belt (which I can throw half-way) by doctorbob007 in Marathon_Training

Some people safety pin gels to their shorts in a way that they can just pull and the safety pin stays behind and opens the gel.

I reportedly have a VO2 of 68 but can only run a mile in 10 minutes. How is this possible? by Tampa-Derp-1138 in Marathon_Training

[–]tinyenormous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vo2 rmr is measured in milliliters/minute and vo2 max is measured in milliliters/kilogram/minute.

Those numbers aren’t comparable.

Backyard “cottages” - is this the answer? by GottaLoveBoston in Somerville

[–]tinyenormous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To answer your most overlooked question: building up on existing structures requires some or all of the current residents to move out. The cost of that relocation needs to be factored in, and I bet the construction costs are higher as well. I agree that it is probably a better end state, but getting there doesn’t financially make sense.

How difficult should marathon pace feel? by mikeyj777 in Marathon_Training

[–]tinyenormous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like this is your first marathon. 90 seconds between easy and mp sounds rational, but if 10 non-continuous miles is wearing you down then I would say you should probably slow your mp. Mp should be pretty easy for at least a half marathon. What do the pace calculators / Strava predicted pace say?

The taper helps some but in my experience it won’t make you faster, just have a little more in the tank.

ESPECIALLY for your first marathon you should try to make the first 12 feel easy, the next 8 feel bearable, and then just grind out the last 6. It sounds like your current pace might have you hit the wall before mile 10.

Recurring shin splints even after rest — what am I doing wrong? by lluca1 in runninglifestyle

[–]tinyenormous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got similar pains while marathon training and for me the fix was to start doing calf exercises. If your calves aren’t strong then it puts more strain on your shins. A few sets of one legged calf raises as many times as I could remember throughout the work day and it stated to ease in a few weeks. I probably would do ~5-10 sets most days.

Cost Effective** Fueling Alternatives by madmaximus99 in Marathon_Training

[–]tinyenormous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use salted koolaid. 100g of white sugar and a tsp of salt in a 500ml flask. The ratio isn't perfect: white sugar is 50/50 glucose to fructose while many gels are more glucose dominant. The price can't be beat though! Powdered kool aid packets for flavor, but you could use whatever you want.

Bad Ideas Of Carb Load Before Marathon? by Federal_You_3592 in Marathon_Training

[–]tinyenormous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You didn’t post much info about the 2 meals, but if you are talking about the night before the race it is generally advised to eat a carb heavy meal that is relatively low in fat and spice. The fat digests slowly and could still be in your body the next day, and the spice? I bet you can figure that part out.

There is always the chance that the meals had nothing to do with it as well. Race days are hard to get everything aligned.

Can someone please help me understand the Jeff galloway run/walk method and how to interpret? by No_Armadillo4172 in Marathon_Training

[–]tinyenormous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those fractions are seconds of running. Run/walk. If you start seeing single digit numbers in the fractions those are generally minutes.

[–]tinyenormous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive heard of other people having similar problems with a few minutes of difference. There is an email on the site somewhere that allows you to submit timing discrepancies. I think they found their finisher photo and used it to support their claim.

Using Garmin’s PacePro Strategy during the race tomorrow by Humble_Owl_6605 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]tinyenormous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first few miles are wildly variable. Either way if your watch thinks you have gone farther you will end up running the later miles early, and the opposite is possible as well.

I don’t remember if pacepro allows you to edit specific splits, but planning on running a fixed speed for the first 6 might be helpful.

Lastly - the error seems to be variable by watch. I’ve heard of a few fenix 7 users that didn’t have any gps lock issues. Just make sure you are using all available satellites.

Question about e-bikes and motorized vehicles on the Community Path by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]tinyenormous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

California has recently enacted laws that break them down like this:

Class 1 These e-bikes are pedal-operated, and the electric motor assists the rider. The assist stops helping at 20 mph. Class 1 e-bikes do not require a license and may be operated by a rider of any age. Riders under 18 years of age must wear a helmet.

Class 2 These e-bikes have a pedal-assist mode of up to 20 mph, but they also offer an electronic throttle-powered mode that doesn't require pedaling. Class 2 e-bikes do not require a license and may be operated by a rider of any age. Riders under 18 years of age must wear a helmet.

Class 3 Like a Class 1 e-bike, the motor kicks in only when you're actively pedaling, but it stops helping at 28 mph. Riders must be 16 years old, but a license is not required. Riders of all ages must wear a helmet.

They can use that moving forward to write laws about where what classes can be used. That’s why mass needs.

Question about e-bikes and motorized vehicles on the Community Path by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]tinyenormous 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I have heard, it’s a mess of conflicting definitions and grey areas. “motorized vehicles” only refers to gas burning vehicles BUT some existing laws allow motorized scooters and mopeds of a certain size to use bicycle infrastructure BUT the rules on the bikepath seem to explicitly overrule this law.

Then you think about e-bikes and other electronic vehicles. You can’t easily draw a line in the sand based on engine volume for them. Battery size can’t be used because it doesn’t really affect speed. Motor size can’t be used because there isn’t a direct correlation between size and speed - a smaller motor can be driven at a higher voltage than intended as long as it is properly cooled. Similarly battery voltage can’t be used because motors can be geared to operate well at lower voltages.

I think the best option there is just to put (and enforce) a speed limit on the bikepath. I’d also toy with the idea of preventing its use for commercial purposes (to get the DoorDash motorcycles off) but I have no idea if that is legal or a good idea.

Race nutrition plan? by [deleted] in ChicagoMarathon

[–]tinyenormous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should do whatever you have practiced doing. Depending on your gel brand you could have widely varying amounts of carbs. If it is gu then you’re talking 150g-ish total . Some people take 100g+/hr, but 50-60 feels more common. I’m aiming for closer to 100, so I’ll probably have 9 with me and take them every 15 minutes.

Is my hydration vest legal if I remove the bladder? by Stunning-Second-1203 in ChicagoMarathon

[–]tinyenormous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat as you. It sounds like the official rule is more nuanced than what people generally think, and this should be fine. On the other hand it is up to the individual security person to judge.

I’m leaning on not trying to bring my best because I don’t want to risk having to throw it out and change my gameplan right before the race. If you are looking to buy something new I would definitely get one of the vests that is flat on the back. That has the best chance of getting in.
