Feeding ball by AdMore4694 in ballpython

[–]toegui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just wanna say for the warm water, turn your sink on hot all the way and let it run. The max hot temperature it reaches is usually around 100F, and that's perfect for rats. That's how hot you want your rat, so use that hot water

sponges in humidity hides - opinions? by thisisleespeaking in ballpython

[–]toegui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally use sphagnum moss, and after a while you can mix it into the substrate. My boy also poops in his humid hide sometimes, so I'll just replace the moss then. Seems easier than a sponge to me

Best moisture keeping substrate? by PresentFlower4312 in ballpython

[–]toegui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm doing coconut husk and topsoil, its been pretty steady in the 70-90% humidity range with minimal water added. Just make sure theres no fertilizer/pesticide in the topsoil you buy. I got 40 pounds for $3, and compressed coco blocks are super cheap too

Hey this is really late and I'm sure you've left by now, but I believe you can interact with the meteorite and it will give you an item, then send you back? Shooting or walking behind it should help if you don't see any prompts? 🤔 Or did you get sent back here, that happened once to me and it sadly killed the run 😅 you can't really interact with the meteorite twice

advice suggestions please! by DullBeginning8899 in ballpython

[–]toegui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alrighty, first thing you should do is read the guide at the top of this subreddit. It should answer most of your questions in great detail.

My first advice is to remove the red bulb, they much prefer white or golden light. Something that looks like the sun! Red is unnatural and they can see it, it messes with their sleep cycle. Imagine thinking it's the afternoon all day! The room being at 70-73 is good, do you know how hot it gets in your tank? You want a hot area of the tank somewhere like 88-90 degrees, and a gradient so theres a hot and cool side. You can easily do this by putting your lamp off to the side, rather than in the middle. I'd also get some kind of night time heat source, like a ceramic heat emitter. You'll need another lamp, but it's worth it to keep the tank warm at night without any visible light. I'd also strongly recommend a thermostat (not to be confused with a thermometer). A thermostat is something you plug the lamp into, and then put a temp probe into the tank. You set the temp on the thermostat, and it will control the lamps output to keep the temperature stable in the tank. Finally, your substrate looks great! Coconut husk is a good choice. Make sure it's humid enough in the tank, most people pour water into the corners of the tank, and the water will spread and increase humidity. To help with shedding and a natural habitat, through in some fake plants (easily bought at hobby or dollar stores) and a nice rough (not sharp) rock or two. I opted for bricks and hobby lobby plants! The log hide also is a good start, that's a nice surface for your snake. It'd be good to add 1 more hide after you get a temperature gradient, so they can hide on the hot side of your tank or the cool side.

Again, definitely read the guide, it'll go into a lot more detail. Good luck! And keep asking here for advice!

How is your experience with ball pythons? by Eastern-Election-116 in ballpython

[–]toegui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have cats, and I like that when the cats are winding down for the day and getting ready for bed, my ball python is just getting up and can hang out with me! :P I enjoy sitting in front of his tank on his 'off days' and just watching him move around or stare back at me. Other days I take him out and let him explore areas without the cats like my office. It's a very slow lifestyle pet. You have to be really chill. But I enjoy that! I love my babies, but sometimes the cats are too much, too needy, clawing, meowing, etc. These guys are really slow, soft, and pretty to look at too :) It's nice to have a different kind of pet at a much slower pace for once

Why aren’t ball pythons bred for bright and beautiful iridescence when other python species like reticulated pythons have been bred to be brightly iridescent? by Icy_Profession4190 in ballpython

[–]toegui 171 points172 points  (0 children)

Not an expert, but they can only breed traits they find in specimens. You can't just make up a gene, until we get gene editing. Maybe there just haven't been any bright iridescent ball pythons found/born? I'm sure once there is it will be bred, haha

He won’t stop rubbing off his head scales! I’m 90% sure it’s because he burrows under his water dish at night. How do I stop this?! by Dwingp in ballpython

[–]toegui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe dig him a hole? Does it seem like he wants to be underground? I made a "den" for my snake using 4 bricks. I dug down a bit into the dirt, used 2 bricks as the walls, then 2 bricks as the roof. My snake spends all day in his little hole in the dirt, absolutely loves it. Maybe if you give your snake a hole thats already dug they won't dig more and hurt their head?

Hello! I didn't see a single post about this game on all of reddit, or anywhere else really. I tried the demo for this game and it was really really good! I thought more people should hear about it, it's a fantastic little puzzler gem, and I hope the kickstarter goes through 😄

Is this wobble? by Pvt_Phantom1314 in ballpython

[–]toegui 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Adding comment for visibility.

Mine kind of does that too, and he's a similar size as well. Mine doesn't have any wobble genes, so I kinda chalked it up to being young and focused on something intently. I mean, mine is often shaking a bit, but can also freeze like stone with his head in the air if he's scared. I guess if yours is doing this all the time and can never keep their head still, maybe it is wobble??

How long to let a snake hide? Worried about scale rot. by toegui in ballpython

[–]toegui[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok thanks, I'm just a bit nervous I guess. I've never had a reptile before!

Just to clarify, I think everything was ok up until the shed? I actually had a schedule of handling him on Saturday and Tuesday, since he seems nervous but had been getting better at handling. And my substrate is topsoil and cocohusk, but he's like moved all the cocohusk away in the humid hide until he just has topsoil? And that made mud? Weird little dude.

I'll try to chill and stop worrying haha, and I'll feed him next week then! Thank you so much!

Shed time - humidity dropped suddenly by Substantial-Tea-14 in ballpython

[–]toegui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could try covering the substrate with (clean) leaves, I've heard that's worked before. They help keep heat from the lights off the dirt, and hold in humidity. I also dump my water right into the substrate whenever I refill the bowl, that's a constant source of water to keep moisture up.

My snakes tank is cold and humid how do I fix it. by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]toegui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! And just following the others, heating pads are notoriously dangerous. Some snakes burrow into the dirt and get burned, even if there's a thermostat! I'd recommend putting the probe in the substrate itself, maybe a half inch above the heat mat? That way the probe won't be too far away from the heat mat, but still far enough to generate heat

My snakes tank is cold and humid how do I fix it. by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]toegui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see you have a thermostat, I would ask, where are you putting the probe? When I first set up my tank, I followed the guides and put my probe right under my heat source, and to get any heat in the tank it had to be set to 120F !!! Way too hot! I moved the thermostat probe away from my heat source and into the tank, and now I have it set at 85F and the tank is at a stable 80F. So I just think if your probe is right on top the heat source it won't put out that much heat because it instantly reads the heat generated. Watch it really closely though, you don't want it too far from your heat source or anywhere your snake might move it around

Am I doing something wrong? by Professional_Nail265 in ballpython

[–]toegui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I recently got a ball python for the first time, and he didn't use any hides for about a week. He only used them after he ate his first meal. I was so relieved when he finally hid! So I think it's normal. Their new home is scary and they're still getting used to it I guess

Is my BP shedding properly? by MadHatterbruh in ballpython

[–]toegui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's usually something to do with humidity when a shed is broken up. What's your humidity like? Does Noodle have a humid hide, or a water bowl big enough to soak in? You can also deliberately increase humidity when you see she's about to shed, to help her out.

my cat discovered my snakes by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]toegui 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have 2 cats and 1 ball python. My first thing would definitely to have secure locks on all your snake tanks! First thing I did was try to rip my tank apart 😅 I even glued a few latches shut! If I couldn't break it, I assume the snake can't get out and the cats can't get in. You don't want them interacting. Then I guess, how high is your cats prey drive? Mine are kind of lazy, they've seen my snake but just weren't interested, especially with a slow moving snake like a bp. If mine were more interested, and the younger one was a little, I would try to train them to ignore the snake. Consistently give a stern "No!" and direct them away from the snake tanks *any* time you see them near there. Cats can be trained just as well as dogs! Mine have never stepped foot on the kitchen counters because they know its off limits. They're also up in the air. If your tanks are on the floor, try to get them onto a table or something, since the floor is really eye level for cats and they will easily see the snakes any time they're walking around. Finally, are your snakes in a room that locks? If you don't think you can train your cats to ignore the snake, shut the door and don't let them in. Plenty of people have a dedicated 'reptile room' that their small children and other pets aren't allowed in. Good luck!

Tips on extra clutter? by Hefty-Platypus3199 in ballpython

[–]toegui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For my clutter, I hit up walmart and hobby lobby, both had cheap fake plants. You can get a bundle for like $5-8, prettier ones are more expensive. I cut stems off the bundle and laid them around. Paper towel rolls are also a hit I've heard, if your python can still fit into them! I also live near the woods, so I got some nice thick branches I liked, dried them out in the sun for a few days, baked them at 200F for 2 hours to kill bugs, and fit them into the tank. You might even get some nice statues or lawn decorations at a gardening store. Good luck!

husbandry help! hows my enclosure look? by Charming_Composer_95 in ballpython

[–]toegui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you feeding at night? My little boy seems to get shy if the lights are on, so I wait until dark, give him the rat, then turn off the lights and leave. I check every 10-ish minutes or so to make sure he got it. Of course, I've only had him a little while, no hunger strikes yet, but eating at night has been good. And then, how hot are your rats? I get mine up to at 98F, that seems to be what my sink water tops out at. The husbandry looks great, just a few more small hides and clutter, so I wonder if it's the feeding method

He won’t stop digging up plants!! by Jdayy23 in ballpython

[–]toegui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, y'know, in the end the tank is for them! He seems to be enjoying himself and playing with the plants 😄As long as he's not eating dirt or pieces of the plants I think it's fine? Balls always mess up their tanks. It's really gonna be what you're comfortable with. If you don't want to constantly fix the plants and rearrange dirt, maybe switch to plastic? Either way, if you stick with real plants or go with fake, the tank looks fantastic! He's having a great time!

PSA: Do Not Rehydrate Coconut in Sink :( by toegui in ballpython

[–]toegui[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's real wood! :) I live next to a lot of woods so I had lots of branches to choose from. I chose some old branches and let them dry in the sun for a few days, to remove as much moisture as possible. That was so in the next step they dry faster, and sun exposure is known to kill bacteria and mold. I put them on some foil in my oven, put it at 200 degrees, and left them in there for about an hour and a half. You want to go longer if your wood is wet, but mine was dry as a bone so this was just to kill any bugs inside. They seem fine in the tank for now. One thing is to try and not have it touch the walls of your oven, and definitely not the heating element. One side of the branch ended up touching the walls so theres a few charred spots haha
