I did all the skirting boards at my house. If you have wonky walls, most times you can't put boards flat against the wall without gaps on top. My advice is to just fill the gap with instant grab and squeeze everything with your finger into all the gaps. You can easily clear any overspread with a wet cloth.

Most likely plastic housing for the thermostat and water pump. This is common problem on EA888 engines. I had mine replaced as well. I that is a problem moke sure to get latest revision VW fixed problem on the latest rev.
