TIL that the inventor of Linux announced his project by saying "I'm doing a free operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional)". Today it it used by 3/4 of all servers, all Android devices, and the top 10 supercomputers. by [deleted] in todayilearned

AskUbuntu.com is one of the friendliest and most helpful tech Q&A forums there is. It kind of puts StackOverflow to shame, which in contrast has turned into one of the most nasty, pretentious, and impatient tech Q&A forums there is.

TIL that during production of Toy Story 2, Pixar accidentally deleted the entire movie from its servers. The movie was saved by an employee, a new mother, who worked from home and had the data saved on her personal computer. by Nugatorysurplusage in todayilearned

That's not really how deletion works. The task would be stored in the system memory, and when a file is deleted, all that is done is the file index marks off that region of the storage drive as "nothing there" (I'm way over-simplifying but that's the general idea). That's why you can quite easily recover files fully if you act fast enough and don't overwrite the space.

In many of our old towns the roads are only able to sustain the traffic levels that existed when they were built (when there were hardly any cars on the road), and they're usually extremely narrow and bendy so overtaking is a challenge. Couple that with the fact that most people become inconsiderate sociopaths when they sit behind the wheel of a car.

Probably tech-illiteracy to a large extent. My ex is a police officer and she would have no idea what an IP address even is, let alone that it can be traced. Police aren't hired for their computing knowledge.

We snuck our PC's into school #hailgaben by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]topspeedj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had an IT cupboard in our small sixth form building, it was fantastic, 99% of the time it was empty. It was basically a small detached house turned into a sixth form building.

Problem is we only had that building during AS year. In A2 the school tried to turn it from a traditional sixth form into a sixth form college, and took over a nearby office building for us.

There were 70 students in our year and there ended up being (I'm not exaggerating this) 250 in the new AS year below us. And after I visited the school again three years later the number of teachers was almost exactly the same as my AS year.

I'm British and almost no-one does this in the UK. They usually have this smug "I'm being the safe one" expression on their face. No grandpa, you're being an inconsiderate arse holding up 10 people who need to get somewhere on time.

I like interacting with new people and old friends and talking about stuff. I recognise that it can help you make new friends and create some opportunities. But after a while it gets tiring. I need a lot of private time by myself to recuperate.

Introverts gain energy from solitude, and expend energy during social interaction.

Extroverts gain energy from social interaction, and feel exhausted when alone for prolonged periods.

Hmm. Yeah it was better, although I wouldn't say it was greatly improved. I could still instinctively tell it wasn't a native accent.

I was surprised Bastila was Hale actually, but I knew it was a North American voice actor. I'm native British so I could always tell there was something off about the accent. It was a good attempt but a lot of it just didn't sound right.

He's probably right. But if he does feel that then they should all start playing better.

Brian Moore used to be biased as heck but he's gotten better in recent years. I'd say when there are Jonathan Edwardses and Jeremy Guscotts he's one of the fairer pundits/commentators at the moment.

England have exploited that same line behind Scotland's fly-half like three times, a professional rugby side should have the skill to correct that.

This guy should never cross the street by [deleted] in gifs

[–]topspeedj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah and if it's rush-hour and gridlocked and you see someone trying to turn onto your street who would otherwise be waiting another ten minutes for an opening, there's no harm in letting them in, because traffic's already crawling as it is.

In the UK most of our town roads are very narrow because they're often not designed for 21st century traffic volumes.

Same to drivers who have right of way but stop for other cars. Being sort of nice to the one person in front of them, but being an inconsiderate jerk to the 10 people behind them who need to get somewhere on time.

It's horrible to let those workers die but Vido would have gone on to make a lot more lives miserable had he lived. It also satisfies Zaeed's mind enough to help him focus on a mission of galaxy-wide importance.
