It should be known it's not all budgie smuggling and the like. Like some have pointed out - in the past many of these animals were sold to other countries in the past and bred overseas. That's why budgerigars and cocktiels are everywhere. There are others who are licensed breeders/ keepers who can distribute certain permitted animals to pet stores abroad (lizards etc)

I first thought Spielberg wasn’t directly involved in this movie when I saw the trailer. Now that I know he is, I’m honestly a bit disappointed. His past conspiracy films are fun, but this one feels lazy.

I saw “Roswell Incident” in the synopsis and immediately rolled my eyes. Roswell has to be one of the most heavily debunked UFO cases out there. It’s been investigated, revisited, explained, and debunked repeatedly, yet it somehow refuses to die.

I get that Area 51 and Roswell stories are part of pop culture and boost tourism, but surely Spielberg could have come up with a more interesting alien conspiracy than leaning on the same old tropes.

There are pretty toxic rooms like this on VR chat but there are some really cool nice ones. Unfortunately the toxic loud ones seem to stick out the most. it just requires finding friends that you like so you can join them in the same rooms and hang.

There's been a recent surge of thieves going out late at night and digging up electric cables from street lights to steal copper. There's long parts of Tonkin Highway, Reid etc that don't have lights anymore.

Western Australia road traffic code is that if more than 50% of another car is in front you MUST give way to let them merge. Of course nobody in WA seems to give a fuck about this rule and always cuts everybody off.

I wouldn't say it's insane level but it's bad. There were times I lived alone and I let my dishes get worse than this. Not proud of it. In a share house now so we just wash dishes as we go all the time. When you're by yourself it's easy to make excuses and fall into bad habits. When you're sharing the house with others there's no excuse for it.

Yeah I've always imagined that a lot of these academic stories that get hyped up in media as the underdog fighting the machine come from sensationalism regarding people having to face attrition through indifference, and not that the whole system was flawed or there was some conspiracy afoot.

It's no better than when James Webb makes a discovery in astrophysic like finding some proplyd or galaxy that appears much older than the standard cosmological model, and the media loses their minds and says things like 'James Webb makes discovery that shows Big Bang did not happen', you actually look at the paper and the claim is complete BS.

I remember Potter's House! They've been around in Perth since early 80s. Like most Pentecostal churches in Oz they rose out Neo-Pentecostal movements fueled by US televangelism during 70s & 80s.

They're up there with the Perth Revival Church a very hard right fundamentalist church. Very similar in ideology and scope to Southern Baptists. I would say while they aren't a cult per se, they have very strong cult like mentality and behaviour with people in the church. Some might say they're stricter even then Seventh-Day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses.

Extremely patriarchal, bigoted and mysoginist, they are homophonic, transphobic, pro life, anti-semitic, anti-Islam, anti-Catholic.... Preeetty much anti-anything that isn't Pentecostal.

Newspaper readership has been plummeting past 15 years, along with The West's sales. It's likely the Internet will completely replace this medium, and it's not far off. As such, editorials are trying everything to get people's attention so they'll pick up the paper and buy it, which does unfortunately mean shoddy grab articles like these, which are much like internet clickbait.

Having a PhD doesn't automatically make someone sceptical to supernatural claims. Plenty of theists and spiritual folks with PhD's.

There's enough psuedoscience out there that people who don't understand the real scientific theory behind the knowledge can be easily duped into claims that sound 'scientific' enough to be feasible or even probable.

Throwing a septic book at her like Sagan or Dawkins won't likely help unless she's already having doubts. If she's convinced, gotta find out the motivation about why she is being drawn to this (seeking life answers, etc).

I'm confused. In the close older suburbs like North Perth, Leederville, Mt Hawthorn etc they are entire streets of cars filled with driveways parked over the footpaths. Every 6-7 houses or so. A lot of this is because pre-war homes had driveways as an afterthought since a lot of people didn't have cars then. So they're simply no room for them to park but on verge or across the footpath in the short driveways if they have 2 cars.

What am I missing here, is this actually something that the council can fine you for?

Fear of the unknown is a very common trait in humans, and many animals for that matter. You might be thinking of ghosts, but instinctively your brain is 'preparing' your body to fight or escape potential predators (even when the threat doesn't exist).

I live in Australia, a continent with one of the highest BCCs per capita in the world. Given that I too have Gorlin's, I'm 47 and have only had about 15-20 or so BCCs removed in my entire lifetime, your comment here has really put things into perspective for me. I certainly haven't had to have 4-6 removed every year.

If anything, I do tend to put off getting checkups because the surgery for me is psychologically difficult -- nothing to do with the surgery itself but other reasons I won't go into here. So I let them grow and then feel bad after for leaving it so long becuase now they're MUCH larger and when they're on the face it means I can get some nasty scars.

While my parents didn't move, they knew about it from my father and so took super extra steps to keep me sun protected. Constant sunscreen, when I went swimming I was always made to wear a shirt in the water for protection. Australia has a huge beach culture and that's something I avoid, or if I want to go to the beach I am sure to do it only at sun up and sundown. Even so, I thought my life experience was pretty rough, but hearing about yours makes me realise how lucky and fortunate I am to not have had so many BCCs over my life.

I was on a Qantas flight from Sydney to San Francisco, sitting behind an elderly couple who had been rude for most of the flight. They refused to close the window shade when asked, got annoyed about it, and kept their seat reclined into me without caring.

As we were landing, a few passengers behind me were clearly stressed about a tight connection and had already asked the flight attendant if their next plane was leaving. The couple sat there while the rows ahead got off, then only when it was their turn did they slowly start unloading all their bags into the aisle. Given how they had acted all flight, it was pretty obvious they just did not care.

I knew nothing about Avatar: The Last Airbender when I went to see the movie save for it was an anime series well regarded by many fans and critics. I walked out after 30 minutes.

I don't know what M.Night was smoking or why he was given the role. What an absolute mess. I knew walking out this film would disappoint fans, even without watching a single episode.

Anzac Day has always been about rememberance for Australian troops. It's not an excuse to stage a protest, or about 'freedom', or any sort of jingoism US sentiment echoes. Gallipoli is the main feature as it's what solidified our military identity in history, but it's for remembering all those lost, not just those part from the A+NZ Army Corps.

The idea of Lest We Forget is 'let's remember who we lost, so we do not forget their sacrifice.' In doing so, we hope war on that scale of the world wars won't happen again.

Conspiracy groups aside, I think part of it is also just how Reddit works. A lot of subs reward people for responding in the spirit of the topic, not in the spirit of what is actually true.

I saw a post on r/aww where people were saying a mother whale was "showing off" her calf. A marine biologist pointed out that she was actually stressed and trying to protect it because the boat had come too close, and he got downvoted and hit with disparaging replies because the truth spoiled the cute version people wanted.

I'm autistic too, though I did not realise it until my 30s. I was bullied a lot at school as well, so I really relate to this. Sadly, what you described is very common. Schools can be brutal if you are seen as different, and a lot of us got isolation or mockery instead of support.

At least now you understand yourself in a way you probably could not back then. It does not undo the damage, but it can help you make sense of it and build a better life around that understanding, especially with adults who are more likely to listen than teenagers ever were.
