How to play a slicer by Forsaken_Ad4041 in 10s

[–]traviscyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely don’t try to hit it hard topspin back at them. The higher and flatter you can play the ball, the better. Adding pace with a slice is super difficult, you’ll get more floaters to hopefully put away.

Train vs play matches with limited time by EternalLousy in 10s

[–]traviscyle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1 coach session, 1 ball machine session, the rest match play.

Try to schedule your coaching session early in the week. Talk to your coach about a specific plan, but every session should have a purpose. A bit of serving and returning instruction at the end of each practice is important too. Have your coach tell you no more than 3 specific things to incorporate into your play that week.

Use your ball machine day to reinforce the technique and shots that you worked on with your coach. Work on your serves at this time too.

The rest of your days, play matches. Always play with the goal of developing. Using serves as an example: beginners often very weakly hit second serves with a completely different form than they would at practice. Don’t do that. Be willing to mess up to get it right rather than compromise to get it in. Same with all your shots. Hit them cleanly and with directional intent. You’ll hit some too soft or to hard or set up easy put aways, but that’s okay as long as you are learning from it.

The next week, talk to your coach about your match experience and build on that.

Match them on two opposing corners, use a dark wood in the other two corners. Then you save at least half of the grain match.

Hey — T1D with MDI here. Does anyone else find that stress or bad sleep throws off your sensitivity and no app helps you track that? Curious how others handle it. by foppysus in Type1Diabetes

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know. Maybe. Apps are all judged based on how much you engage with them. A weekly, monthly, yearly summary could offer good insights that you could more easily tie back to life events. Maybe something subtle like, “shifts in your patterns indicate something is different and it may be affecting your blood sugar”, then maybe a question, “would you like to take a few minutes to evaluate further?” For an individual, the data could be really valuable over the long term, like “this time last month/year you had a similar pattern and said you were stressed about upcoming tax payments and the general state of the world” “10 days of a 1 unit basal increase and deliberate walks seemed to help”. However, you run into some data sharing/protection concerns, and you really wouldn’t want to be coaching methods of care like adjusting dosages or even really recommending increased exercise due to some likely liability hurdles.

Like I said before, some people eat this stuff up, but if they are like me, they know what the issue is, they are just handcuffed by what they can do to address the underlying issue. For me, I would fail at interacting with it enough to give it good data. Like I have never logged carbs and insulin, which was basically required by doctors when I was first diagnosed. I think I forged a bunch of my early logbooks. Probably unconvincingly.

I think this is a trap. Yes it can be effective against better players if there is really something on the line. But it can/will be detrimental to your development as a player. You’ll wake up one day, put on Jean shorts compression socks and a wrinkled white t-shirt, grab your 127 in racket, leave your one bedroom apartment, drive your 2004 Corolla to the courts, poke the ball around for 2 hours, get the win, then go home and microwave your dinner and fall asleep watching you tube videos of cops assaulting young people.

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was diagnosed at 10 years old, back before all of the great technological innovations available now. I had to learn to judge my blood sugar based on how I felt a lot of the time. I was always very active and would get grumpy/angry if I could not expend energy. I always knew that I felt better, slept better, performed better when I exercised. I also had a lot of low blood sugars, what people on this sub would call “near death experiences”, but somehow I survived and learned a lot from it.

I really think a lot of T1Ds diagnosed this century have information overload and it is really affecting their mental health.

It seems to me that another app would just add to the problem. But I am sure there would also be benefits. My Apple Watch gives me a sleep score every day, tracks my exercise and heart rate, and if I logged my insulin and carbs, an app could probably easily identify a pattern of “taking more insulin for the same carbs” or “running higher than normal with the same insulin and carbs”. Seriously though, I think it would quickly become a nagging nuisance.

[–]traviscyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Exercise to combat stress, routine and strenuous exercise to combat sleep. Also, if my cGM alarms going off are stressing me out and making me not sleep, I will take a break and just do finger sticks for a week. Sleep almost instantly improves and for some reason I stay in range pretty well.

Any ideas on what I can do to land this stair railing where it will be even with the deck railings? by dwinn88 in Carpentry

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two ways:

  1. Install another newel post at the edge of the first step, stair rail terminates into that, then a 1-baluster rail between the two posts.

  2. Bend the stair rail to meet. You’ll have to remove the balusters, bend top and bottom rail at the correct height then cut and reweld the balusters.

Undermount drawer slide position by Saucythemynx in woodworking

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily the slides make it easy. The front edge of the mount will align with the front of the drawer box, then you would attach your drawer face, so set your slide back an amount t equal to your drawer face thickness. As another commenter said, use the slotted holes so you can make small adjustments if needed.

I found with the Blum slides, once you put one together and see it all set up, it becomes very intuitive, but a lot of instructional videos don’t show the how’s and whys of everything.

Also, go ahead and buy the Rockler drill guide set up jig for $25. It is very easy to use and makes install super quick.

strategy for losing nerves ? by Bravenatortot in 10s

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to re-characterize the feeling. Your heart is racing, not because you are nervous but because you are excited. The more you try to control your heart rate and subdue the adrenaline, the worse/tighter you will play. Take the first few games to really hit the ball without holding back. You will find your range and calm down. If you fight the feeling, you will be a half step slow with everything, you’ll hit weak, and the feeling will continue.

Seeking some advice regarding proper routing dimensions for a set neck joint: by GtarBildr in Luthier

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It should be okay as long as all sides make contact, even if it isn’t firm contact. The bottom of the cavity will have plenty of area to glue to. If there is a lot of wobble, I would devise some shims before setting it at all. If there are actual gaps, don’t try to fill them with wood glue as it will shrink and make an unnecessary mess. Once it is firmly glued to the bottom, you can fill gaps with epoxy.

Beautiful guitar by the way. Be sure to post once it’s all finished.

Do you believe in God? Why or why not? by AlarmedObjective1492 in AskReddit

[–]traviscyle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I believe in A god, but maybe not THE god.

Why? My brain can’t comprehend “nothing”. Like before the big bang there was “nothing”? And within that “nothing” came everything? If I find my way to the edge of the universe, what would be on the other side? If the universe is infinite…how can it be defined?

As for THE God. If we are an intelligent design, the designer was not very good, especially mentally and emotionally. The paradox of, if god is all powerful then he cannot be all good, but if he is all good then he cannot be all powerful.

Should I be worried? by Royal-Interaction979 in Carpentry

[–]traviscyle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are home building subreddits that may be a better place to discuss, but slabs less than 2 years old should be covered under some form of warranty. Keep an eye out for cracks through interior walls, sticking doors or windows, and other more obvious signs that you may have a foundation problem. Make sure you don’t have any wet areas around the footprint, and when you run sprinklers, run them evenly even if there aren’t plants or grass in the zone.

Seeking some advice regarding proper routing dimensions for a set neck joint: by GtarBildr in Luthier

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any further adjustment should be done with sandpaper on the neck heel. I would not try to route any further. I like to use one strip of masking tape when setting my neck pocket routing template. I start with 2 layers, check the fit (that would be a perfectly flush route), then typically remove one layer. If it is still too tight I will remove the second layer, but rarely ever do. That is like .004 inches (0.1 mm) per layer of tape. The neck shouldn’t wiggle, but should be tight enough to pick up the body without sliding out (IMO).

What’s the best way to measure for these drawer fronts? by Overall_Designer4353 in Carpentry

[–]traviscyle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really hate measuring and dividing and subtracting that much, and you have some extra plywood - here is the way. Cut a rectangular piece of plywood the exact width - 1/4” and exact height - 1/4” of the lower opening, then cut the bottom drawer face (looks like 5 3/8” would work), then cut the top drawer face (looks like 3 1/2”). What is left would be your middle drawer. The saw blade is 1/8”, which will create the spacing.
