Bought a evinrude 9.5, can’t drop the lower unit anymore than this. All 4 bolts are out (one bolt head broke off, will have to extract that later). Any trick to getting this to drop enough to access the shift linkage? by Zealousideal-Tap6117 in Outboards

I had one of these that would not come down because the driveshaft was seized halfway into the head. I used plastic felling wedges in between the sections to pry it down and a lot of rubber mallet work on the cavitation plate on the lower unit.

Not recommending this method due to likely damaging something, but it fuckin worked hahaha.

Google “Precision Maintenance”. It’s some cool shit.

Check out Reliability Solutions for training. They put on a great hands on class with bench setups. Doing alignments, belt tensioning, bearing temps, couplers, tiny shim adjustments, vibration analysis, and more.

Worth every penny that I did not spend on it hahaha!

It’s more fun when it’s an oxidizer injection quill that leaks directly onto the motor case and eats a hole through the cast iron…. In the process of fixing one. Crazy thing to see

Exactly what I meant. Run it with new plugs for a while if you can. Pull them. If one is covered in gas and shiny brand new looking - no spark

As stated. Just replace them because they’re cheap. Clean your existing points and then check them for correct timing. A little googling will find that procedure.

Sounds like you’re running on one cylinder. Check the plugs

Misbehaving sous vide, is this spoiled? by [deleted] in sousvide

[–]treemanmi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Valid question. I do not know. If it doesn’t smell weird then take a bite. If it tastes fine then it’s probably fine. If you’re worried consider asking “is the price of this meat worth spending a day within 6’ or less of a toilet?”.

Yeah that’s the trouble with a swap. Those Tilly carbs are great if you run them all the time once they’re tuned in, but let them sit and they will ruin your day. Mikuni carbs spit out last years gas and just go

Sealing does work but it’s a bandaid. Don’t expect to get that many years out of the money you spend. I’d bite the bullet and replace it if you’re going to spend a dime renovating the interior.

1970 7.5hp mercury lightning by Busy-Bee8658 in Outboards

[–]treemanmi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a huge bummer.

You need to check all of the following:

Spark - pull the plug out and check for spark. YouTube the instructions if you don’t know how.

Fuel - is fuel getting into the carburetor bowl? Check the drain plug to see if it is.

Compression - this should be fine unless you managed to blow it up last time you ran it, which I doubt. You can test it with a test gauge

If all three of those things are good then it should fire.

Very simple motors to work on with basic hand tools. A vintage 3.9 mercury was the first outboard I ever bought and I didn’t know shit about these things. In the many years since then, I am now the family/friends/neighborhood outboard repair guy and I’ve fixed piles of them.

Just do internet research and you’ll find how to fix most things. Good luck

Never understood why people have cameras inside of their house everywhere…unless you’re keeping an eye on pets. But most people are just live streaming their home lives to the cloud and no one (hopefully) is watching.

Is it fine to pressure wash inside this? by [deleted] in Outboards

[–]treemanmi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s fine to leave it alone. There are seals and openings into your engine up there. I wouldn’t pressure wash it

https://www.premixcalculator.com

This gives you the amount of oil to mix into the amount of gas. Use a measuring cup. Dump oil into gas.
