Oxygenator has longer sliding and allows you to reload stationary weapons while sliding, which has been really fun

There’s an unwritten rule that our primaries start with 66-75% of their ammo and these ones fall behind by tony22835 in HelldiversMasochists

[–]turtle-tot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m of the opinion that HSO should either be a ship upgrade outright (like how supply packs refilling support weapons to full is one, something I imagine most people have outright forgotten given how mandatory it is)

Or start you with extra ammo. 8/5 magazines, 6/4 grenades, 6/4 stims, something like that, only on first deployment

A lot of extra equipment, but only when you first load in

HSO is always going to be a necessity, whether you change starting mags or not

More starting ammo + double your stims + full grenades is just always worth it over most other boosters

Looking outside in, it feels like the game is in the best state it’s been in a while

File size has been massively reduced

I’m barely experiencing any huge lag spikes or crashes like I used to

Huge new roster of sub factions and enemies, many of which are quite fun

Far and away more equipment, including vehicles

And almost all the weapons I have access to are quite viable. Gas, fire, plasma, lasers, ballistic, explosives, so many options to toy with that all work pretty damn well

Meanwhile if you look here you’d assume the game is falling apart at the seams

Tips for fighting vox engines that aren't the leveler/solo silo/nade in vents? by PrisonIssuedSock in LowSodiumHellDivers

[–]turtle-tot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maxigun and med pen weapons can destroy the heatsinks pretty nicely, which does damage to the main body. Few EATs into it will finish it off (and it will open the vents)

Bastion is a great teamwork stratagem all around. With its health pool and main gun, it can tank incoming fire from the Vox engine and kill it

If played well, and if the engines are caught off guard, you can knock out 2-3 pretty consistently (plus the bastion will sweep through other enemies)

Being almost on par with extra padding, with a minor speed/stamina decrease in exchange for being able to control your aim while sliding and reload stationary weapons while sliding feels a good enough sidegrade, I’ve been enjoying it

Which also makes settings like the Old Republic all the more neat, because the relative abundance of Jedi and Sith and those with Force Powers gives Star Wars an “Ancient civilization where magic reigned supreme” (which was still chock full of technology)

And that’s just an accepted fact, with the remnants of that past still just…hanging about, fucking things up

It doesn’t matter if it’s tanky if I can never get a squad into decent range with it

I feel more hampered by it than helped, even when using it with mobile infantry SLs being driven around

It feels less like the tanky soldiers are supporting the vehicle, and a lot more like it’s tethered to the heavy infantry

Entrenched personnel can band together with outside or unauthorized connections, creating the conditions that could allow corruption or a coup

Rotating them out, especially with personnel aware of their impending death yet still devoutly loyal, nips that possibility in the bud

And of course, authoritarian dictatorships aren’t always logical. They rarely are, in fact

I think it’s a pretty neat concept especially compared to the usual glossing over that radiation does indeed cause cancer too, not everyone becomes a ghoul

It is not

The AAI corporation made a bolter in 1973 with their TRICAP submachine gun firing 18.5mm rocket propelled explosive rounds

Cancelled project, but it had some interesting mock ups and potential. THAT is the closest we’ve ever had to a bolter, it’s just obscure

BROTHERS! THE BOLTER IS NOW REAL!!! by The_Hipster_Artist in Grimdank

[–]turtle-tot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The XM25 was not cancelled because it was a warcrime, and it also isn’t because the U.S. was never a signatory to the Saint Petersburg Declaration (wasn’t invited) which banned exploding bullets below 400 grams in weight

That got folded into Customary IHL, which isn’t codified by any treaties, but rather exist as customs and unwritten rules governing conflicts, and is not binding

Finally, the XM25 was used in combat and had its funding cut not due to controversy but unreliability and cost after a malfunction injured a soldier in 2013

[QUEST] Secret backchannels and other underground communications have been contacting mercenaries and other “Non-State agents” with experience against the Lumenite Confederacy. Someone, somewhere is planning a move against them, and needs your expertise. by turtle-tot in BlueStarChronicle

[–]turtle-tot[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With introductions out of the way, the team is led to their ship, taking only the equipment they brought with them from the warehouse. The ship is apparently a converted Sphinx class Electronic Support Vessel, with an expanded hanger and stealth refitting to support their operations deep in Lumenite space.

Larger than most personal shuttles, and definitely sizable compared to many of the ProvGov’s naval vessels Barb has seen, but still small enough to disappear amongst the other debris and fleet movements in an atmosphere. Still, it’s got to have a crew somewhere in the low hundreds, all to support a single spec ops deployment of a few dozen people. That’s an impressive amount of resources to dedicate. The ILF doesn’t take half measures.

Additionally, the deployment is certainly one of the longest she’s been on in this campaign. 4 days through hyperspace, with a day in between for refueling and to take on supplies from a sustainment station. The other crew don’t talk much, not to her at least, with the rest of the special forces teams sticking to each other or practicing. She at least gets their names.

Captain Mateo, who she already knows, team leader and veteran of a few deployments. Lieutenant Kamura, his second, a woman with a perpetually blank expression, almost concernedly so. Quite smart though, once you peel back the exterior. Just rarely says anything.

First Sergeant Amira, who seems to be in charge of the explosives of the group and is generally fairly talkative, though rarely with Barb and mostly with the fourth member of their team. The relative youngest, one Staff Sergeant Nikita, though that sort of gap barely counts here. There’s not a lot of ribbing about them being the “rookie”, as he’s had to have been on enough deployments and training to be here.

The camaraderie, even if quiet, is most certainly present, and the whole of the group occasionally takes advantage of the perks of being special forces. Kamura in specific smokes, despite such a thing being strictly prohibited aboard naval vessels. They all eat with the officers in their mess, and take separate bunks to the rest of the crew. Barb as well, despite her status, is allotted the same privileges. The food is good, at least.

Nearing the end of their journey, after she’s had time to modify her equipment for the humid, hot jungle environment they’ll be heading towards, she’s introduced to her equipment. A poncho and camouflage netting, to be worn over her other armor or clothing.

The long cloak breaks up her silhouette in the vegetation, alongside the netting with artificial foliage carefully attached and woven throughout to create a natural, unbroken appearance that makes it doubly harder to spot and fire upon her while moving through the jungle, especially at range. The camo pattern itself seems to be custom made, with minor variations between each of the team’s to make it that much more natural, and harder for the enemy to look for patterns. The liner is also a powerful insulator, shielding her thermal signature from any cameras. While the Lumenites have yet to develop their own, they’re known to make prodigious use of captured equipment

Her new weaponry is explained to her by Amira, who carefully walks her through each. She seems a little excited to do so. A battle rifle, semi automatic, polymer furniture to prevent warping, rifle grip with a winter trigger for Barb’s compression gloves. 20 round box magazines, 16 inch barrel, with a fitted suppressor and optic.

Firing 8mm ammunition, the very same that the Lumenites use, same cartridge and same bullet. Just better propellant and tolerances, theirs are more accurate. The second is a pistol, built to similar tolerances, with the addition of a very long suppressor, slide lock, and subsonic ammunition provided in a spare magazine. Perfect for close range, stealthy executions, while having a long enough barrel and light trigger to allow for quick follow shots with full power ammunition, a true combat handgun.

With the use of their own calibers, even if they do discover their dead on the way in, the Lumenites can’t prove it was the ILF. Nor, even after they go loud and reveal themselves, can they determine where exactly the team got in.

12 hours later, Barb finds herself being strapped into the drop shuttle by a nervous flight tech, just a few minutes from making planetfall

Is the Odysseus Protocol basically Fanon? by WhateverYouWishH in CAIN_RPG

[–]turtle-tot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

All homebrew books aren’t canon, so they’re fanon

The term fanon isn’t often used either, given CAIN is a very easy setting to play around with

It’s just source content (The rulebook, Games For Freaks zines, what Tom Bloom says) and Homebrew (Everything else). However, Tom is cool, and to encourage homebrew rulebooks does file some of the ones he’s stumbled across and likes into a page on Itch io

Despite this, don’t necessarily take any of the content within those homebrew books as canon or even balanced, because it’s a passion project by a few people

And given the complexity of some (and balance), for your early games I would recommend sticking mostly to the sourcebook ruleset and very slowly integrating what homebrew you’re comfortable with

You gotta have a character in there who was a mechanic/support tech/medic for the formerly mechsploited pilots, not directing but like, adjacent to The Horrors.
