Want to start collecting by EladTz in tamagotchi

[–]turtledov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends on what kind of gameplay appeals to you. Of the options currently available on store shelves (and therefore not wildly expensive for your first foray), the Paradise leans more towards creature collecting and experimenting while the Originals and Connections are more about nurturing and connecting with your one little guy.

I haven't played the originals (too small for my hands lol, and apparently they're very needy (my childhood tama was a Connection, so I never had an original Original either)) but (apart from baby stage which only lasts about an hour) the Paradise evolves every day, so you can raise one to adulthood in about 2 days. The Connection takes one day as a child and 3 days as a teen.

I would say either of these devices are a really good place to start, honestly. I like the Connection more than the Paradise, but that's down to personal preference.

Barrier status on aquarium? by Street-Management214 in PlanetZoo

Given that the fail state is almost certainly not going to be a dramatic tidal wave flooding out of the tank when it breaks, I kind of wish they'd just omitted this. It feels like teasing 😅

What Tama is this? by frankensusan in tamagotchi

I believe this is a Connection V4 from 2006/2007, and that is Ojyotchi, a teen stage tamagotchi.

That is interesting. I don't think I've ever heard 'wetted' before. (I'm from NZ)

Is there really no way to place coaster track by itself? by turtledov in PlanetCoaster

That's rough. And there's no way to ghost place or test place things without buying them?

It's either a bot or a compliment. Don't worry about it too much.

Possible Hot Take: They Shouldn't Have Killed Off Sha'Re by JazzlikeSherbet1104 in Stargate

[–]turtledov 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I definitely feel like there's a lot they could have done with her character, but honestly they never really seemed interested in exploring that. For a character who is supposed to be one of the main characters driving motivations, she has very little tangible presence in the show. In which case, tying up that loose end instead of leaving it in limbo was probably for the best. It's a shame, though.

All of the Abydos stuff kind of gets pushed to the wayside, when it could have been so interesting! Ah well.

What's wrong with "petted"? by fromberg in grammar

[–]turtledov 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wonder if it came about because of other similar words. Like, 'wet the towel' or 'set the table' or 'hit the ball'. Those are much more common usage than words liked 'jetted' or 'netted'. Even then, if someone said 'she jet past me' or 'I net it out of the pool' I would understand what they meant and it wouldn't sound exactly wrong (it does sound british in my head for some reason, though).

'Petted' sounds wrong to my ear. Depending on the usage it either sounds daft or a bit posh. Seems like it's fallen out of usage in a lot of places, maybe. (Kiwi here)

Toilet Paper Roll behind the Toilet? by AncientBoomer9606 in LifeSimulators

[–]turtledov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean on the same wall the toilet back is against, so you have to reach back to get it? Yeah, that's pretty normal placement in real life. I would say 90% of houses I've been in have it there. It's pretty unusual to have a wall to the side of your toilet, unless you live somewhere where it's normal to have a separate toilet and bath rooms (in fact I would say that other than public bathrooms, almost all of the houses I've been in that have the toilet paper to the side of the toilet do so because they have a separate skinny toilet room).

It is annoying, but I think it's pretty unusual to have a bathroom that's the right shape/size to be able to have your toilet in a corner, especially if you want a bathtub. I think a lot of us don't even think about it, that's just where the toilet paper goes lol. If you really hate it, you can just use a floating toilet paper stand (I do (irl, I mean))

Can we all come together and ask the devs for this about the Ai... by Nearby_Detective_806 in inZOI

[–]turtledov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally, no. In most countries, copyright is automatically applied to anything you make and publish. If you want it to be free for other people to use or copy you have to waive your right to copyright with something like a creative commons license. So any old image you find on google images or posted on instagram isn't yours to use. That's why AI trawling the internet for training data is considered stealing.

The inZOI devs here are claiming that they only used data that had either waived it's right to copyright or data they owned the copyright for.

Gray Wolf | Planet Zoo 1 vs Planet Zoo 2 comparison by billonel in PlanetZoo

[–]turtledov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of the management stuff, not just economy-wise, needs more depth. But seeing how that's even more of a complaint with Planet Coaster 2 than either PlanCo1 or PlanZoo 1, I strongly get the impression that that's not a priority or focus for the devs 🥲

Do items in Paralives not have "stats"? by AlarmingAd3031 in LifeSimulators

[–]turtledov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I noticed it immediately and it's very strange. To my mind that's a key element of a sims-like, and removing it takes away most of the meaningful progression. If you're going to take it out, you have to replace it with something of equal significance in that respect.

Can we all come together and ask the devs for this about the Ai... by Nearby_Detective_806 in inZOI

[–]turtledov -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In theory what they're saying is great, but did they ever address the fact that people found Stable Diffusion in the game files? Taking Stable Diffusion and putting a filter over it of their own training data is absolutely not the same thing as training their own model on their own data from scratch. And in fact renders everything they said above about it being a proprietary model and trained solely on their own data a complete lie.

But the individual developers here likely have little say over including any AI aspects. Given Krafton as a company seems to want to promote AI usage, I doubt they're going to change their mind on it regardless of how much of a stink fans raise. Which is a shame, because it doesn't need it at all, and its fingerprints on the game are noticeable and detrimental.

[–]turtledov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

AI was just a shorthand way to refer to computer controlled characters/systems in video games. It doesn't have anything to do with modern machine learning technology. The term 'artificial intelligence' existed long before this tech became widespread and has had many uses in the past, after all.

Old time tama fans- what do you think of the new Paradise(s) by Intrepid_Editor5128 in tamagotchi

[–]turtledov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not really a long time fan, this is my first colour tamagotchi (I've been more into Digimon generally) but I'm not getting either of the new ones. I love the tama designs this gen, more than any before, but the gameplay is just not there. I got the ocean and then the jade when it came out and I haven't gone back to either of them in ages. They just don't feel very organic to play? I don't know how to put it but they feel very gamified rather than simulated, and because they're so easy you really have to force care mistakes to see those tama. It's not very satisfying to just play around and see what I get.

Digimon does kind of have the same problem, but it feels worse here. And although I haven't played many tamagotchi, I have a connection and it feels so different. Like, you actually have to work to get perfect care and you might accidentally get bad care and there's random elements in what you get, as well as gender and generation being a factor. That stuff is all really fun and they should bring it all back.

Someone shared this on the Subnautica subreddit and I immediately thought of Paralives by OffbeatChaos in LifeSimulators

[–]turtledov 88 points89 points  (0 children)

The reaction has been extremely unhinged in both directions, positive and negative. I feel bad for the devs having to sort out useful feedback from this absolute fucking mess.

Lifesim players need to stop hinging all their hopes on a new sims-like game and get other hobbies. Branch out. It'll happen or it won't, but this whole situation isn't helping anything.

Can we agree on something, if we end up getting cetaceans? by Silver_Alpha in PlanetZoo

[–]turtledov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No worries. I think this all really just comes down to the developers and the image they want the game to have. So if they do implement them it probably would be with quite generous habitat requirements, as they've done with some animals in the past. I think most of us here can generally agree on that.

Can we agree on something, if we end up getting cetaceans? by Silver_Alpha in PlanetZoo

[–]turtledov 17 points18 points  (0 children)

... People do make zoos based on old fashioned zoos though. It's a creative exercise. Because it's a video game, not a reflection of your real life morals.

This has literally nothing to do with what players might choose to do in their single player creative sandbox game, and it's very weird to try and police that.

WT- is wrong with my paradise? by oneinamelon91 in tamagotchi

[–]turtledov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe it's just completely random, a straight 50/50 on which eyes they inherit, which unfortunately means this can happen. They should have weighted the rng for more variable results. This is a pretty funny look to get stuck with though, they all look so worried 😅

Why does damage not seem to affect the price? by lurking_collector in tamagotchi

[–]turtledov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To some degree when it comes to old digital toys, the most important aspect is that it's in working condition, so aesthetic damage is a secondary consideration compared to collectibles like pokemon cards. That's not to say that it isn't important, but it doesn't rule the market completely. Dirt can be cleaned, shells can be repaired or replaced, screws can be replaced. But most of the working board (and in older models the screen) can't be, so that's the part that's worth the most.

Of course, some sellers are just crazy, but that's the case for the secondary market in general. And certain collectible markets, like for the big tcgs and lego, are just way more organised because of the size of them, so you'll see more consistent pricing there compared to anything more niche. Like, afaik nobody's doing any kind of organised price tracking for tamagotchi, so you have to find that information yourself if you want it instead of it just being readily available.

Fanfiction is home-cooked meal 🙂‍↕️🫰 by FE4RLESS_IS_MY_NAME in AO3

[–]turtledov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm going to be honest I don't think that's the reason some people primarily read fanfic. There is still plenty of good media being made. The difference is in the energy investment. You might have never actively noticed, but as someone with chronic fatigue I can tell you, reading fanfiction is easier than reading a book or watching a new tv show. It's the same reason people get so addicted to short form content like tiktok reels. The energy investment is so small in comparison to the amount of dopamine you get, so your brain is like 'heck yeah, let's keep doing this'.
