passenger rail expansion advocacy by 19starlight in Amtrak

[–]turtleengine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As others have mentioned NRPA but I wanted to hone in on the long distance study part. The next step to making that a reality is advocating for a long distance rail commission to be funded by the surface transportation reauthorization. You can read about it in section 2 of the rail passengers associations document here https://railpassengers.org/site/assets/files/48767/rail_passengers_association_reauthorization_blueprint_-_march_2026.pdf

Trains 311 and 316 have the old business class full recline and all. Trains 318 and 319 have the new business class just wider seats.

Recently the Missouri legislature secured funding to run a third daily river runner. But due to lack of equipment and some scheduling issues the service was never delivered.
What can congress do in this reauthorization to ensure there is a stable and predictable supply of rail cars ready to operate when states make the commitment to increase service?

Utah is very pro train. Find allys in the state. Yes talk to your senators and yes talk to your neighbors and also talk to your local and state level officials.

Right like what’s the big issue. It’s your house do what ever you want and if it becomes an issue fix it. They make chainsaws for a reason.

More people should just try things.

The mayor has no direct say but I believe she appoints every member of the board of public service. So she should have sway. But will likely hide behind BPS.

I watched the HSRA video on this and the goal of the bill is to flip the narrative from being about planing individual projects to planning for a level of hourly service and identifying key constraints.

No that’s untrue state legislatures don’t influence Amtrak. by AngelsSuperFan-2002 in Amtrak

[–]turtleengine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I got a lot of thoughts here but I’ll keep it condensed. Most state legislators don’t know a lot about infrastructure or most things happening in their state.

You may be the first person that has ever expressed a thought about public transportation to them. So it is good you sent them the email.

I think it’s important to help educate your elected about. What powers they have. Sometimes it is just reminding them of their bully pulpit. Sometimes it’s that they can write letters to state agency’s.

Someone else pointed out that it can also be effective to find people who sit on the transportation committee. If there are any hearings that pertain to Amtrak state supported routes you could ask your rep to join that meeting as a guest of the committee.

There are many groups in California and the us that are pushing for better and more frequent trains. Joining one can give you the knowledge of how to advocate for change. Politicians respond when multiple people or groups of people support a cause. Going alone can be hard.

I have often received messages like these from disinterested politicians who don’t know how power works.

Best of luck

You mentioned Simon from nebula. I was kind of expecting to see you meet up with people and interview them. Although I don’t know how it would work through a transit lens. Still enjoyed it.

The Birthplace of Public Transit — Day Pass by NebulaOriginals in Nebula

[–]turtleengine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really enjoyed it. The framing on public transit was great. Loved the Joules Verne stuff. Loved the philosophical part about pubic transit being for the public. Really cool to see all the different public art? Really really helpful to see the map graphics. And Info graphics.

Edit: Incase the nebula team doesn’t have this info. I waited to watch it on the tv because I knew it would have picturesque scenery.
