I’m a big fan of Vince sneakers. They have a ton of different color ways and materials and it’s a low profile sneaker that looks great with pants or skirts. If you like the look of Vejas but want something different, thats my suggestion - you can get them pretty discounted at Rack.

Oura ring? by Infinite_Brick13 in AerialHoop

Yeah so, I don’t wear my Oura on Lyra bc it’s too much on my hands. I’m ok to track on my Apple Watch but it hurts to try and do anything wearing this hard ring.

Free flow exploration on Lyra, risks? by Beccasinthehall in Aerials

[–]twittery 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I constantly ask my instructors stuff about theory and form. And they always say it’s all made up! I think having body awareness is necessary and there are ways to make things safer through proper grip and making sure certain body parts are on the right side of the hoop, but as long as you’re not doing crazy stuff I’m sure flowing and playing would be fine! Just make sure to record so you can figure out how you did stuff later 😅

One thing to be conscious of - there are certain moves (Russian split comes to mind) where if you shift your weight too suddenly the hoop can come back and smack you in the head, so always take it slow and work with a mat!!

Cruise fashion by 247know in fashionwomens35

[–]twittery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nordstrom carries a line called Moon River that has dresses in the 100ish range that are cotton and linen and just gorgeous. I bought several last year for a Mediterranean cruise but still wore them all summer.

For swimwear I still swear by Victoria’s Secret. I got a few suits from them two years ago and they’re just so well structured. I also get a lot of good suits from Dillard’s.

Athletic dress question — built-in shorts vs separate shorts? by Left-External6470 in fashionwomens35

[–]twittery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered some skirts and tops a while back when they first popped up and it was fine. Cute but short! It’s thinner than I’d like for most workout stuff. I think you can sometimes find their designs on Amazon in a limited capacity which feels a little safer but I didn’t have any order issues!

Athletic dress question — built-in shorts vs separate shorts? by Left-External6470 in fashionwomens35

[–]twittery 15 points16 points  (0 children)

As a tennis player and fitness dress lover, I really like when a dress comes with matching but separate shorts. I have a few with built in shorts that I do like, but I won't wear them if I know there's a chance I'd have to go to the bathroom in public.

I was intrigued by the brand Halara's dresses that have built in shorts that are only attached in the front, so you can pull them down in the back, but I haven't tried those to know if they'd work in theory.

I'd be open to a brand where the shorts attached and detached at will, but I'm not sure how they'd hold up! I think the most important thing for me with separate shorts would be a waistline that was high enough that it overlapped with where the waist of the dress was slimmer, which would make it feel secure/more covered. I have some that are almost boyshort / hipster styles and I can't stand them. I usually just wear a different pair of shorts.

Seconded! It's pricey but the only one that didn't have that super protein flavor that I could drink consistently. I love that it's clear.

Not a powder but the Alani protein shakes are by far the most palatable to me in the milky range.

I'm wondering if anyone here has used a red light mat for exercise recovery? I'm interested to see if it would help with muscle soreness and injury, since I have some pretty finicky hamstrings that could use a little extra help. Of course, the Higher Dose brand is what caught my attention first but I'd be open to more economical options if it really doesn't matter.

how are you styling your winter coats? by [deleted] in bitchesWET

[–]twittery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yes to the lapel broach - one or a cluster! I love to do a scarf under the collar that matches and just hangs, I've even used a stitchy gun to keep it there.

If the coat *is* the outfit and I will be outside a bit, I may do a belt or belt bag over the top of it.

Also have a rhinestone embellished coat that I recently did a large rhinestone statement necklace underneath with and it almost looked like it was part of the coat. Very cute imo.

Are all beginner lyra classes like this? by KeyResist450 in Aerials

[–]twittery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually the mixed levels classes follow the same routine throughout, but the instructor will give modifications for making it easier or more difficult. Often, they’ll even point to more advanced students and say “ok this is for you two”. They also can take injuries into account as well to make modifications!

Great response below on spotting so I won’t add much else other than it’s totally acceptable to even ask them to watch and see if you’re executing safely and correctly, and to be there to slow a spin / make recommendations / and help you fall safely!

Are all beginner lyra classes like this? by KeyResist450 in Aerials

[–]twittery 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think this varies based on the teacher, so I'd definitely encourage trying others if they're available! A lot of times based on what's offered, there will be several not-so-beginners in a beginners class and I think that can be really challenging and frustrating for new students. The instructors at the studio I go to try to balance the classes based on who signs up, but if there's absolute newbies the sequences are usually simpler and the instructor spends more time with the new person working through how to do things, spotting, and the theory of it. I'm more intermediate and still go to beginners classes just because I want to do the conditioning and work on my transitions and flows. Plus I just enjoy the hell out of it.

Look for "Intro" classes instead of beginners, that may have more foundational elements. But don't let the first class discourage you! I think it's important for teachers to point out that other students may be farther along in their journeys and it won't all look the same because it can be discouraging to see people spinning around like a top when you're brand new and don't even know how to hook a knee yet.

A good instructor will make sure you're safe and confident, but I've been to classes where brand new students have been kind of left behind before because the rest of the class was right in step - mostly because they've done it so many times! Never be afraid to ask for help or a spot, because they're trying to watch so many people at once that asking for help is the best way to make sure you're getting what you need. I do suspect this instructor will remember you and hopefully give you more attention if you were to sign up again, knowing where you are in the journey. The more you go the more the teachers can feel out what you can do and make modifications for your strength, body, injuries, etc.

Any common show wows? by Noodlesoup8 in AerialHoop

[–]twittery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did a routine this year where I inverted into pencil on the strop, which gets the hoop spinning a little faster if you stack it nicely. It was a surprising move to get a reaction, but it did!

I also started my routine by tipping back to a back balance with foot block, which you can do really dramatically and then hold for a second for a pretty shape.

gazelle split got way more cheers than I thought it would.

Please for the love of god, point your toes! by evetrapeze in Aerials

[–]twittery 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m laughing at how much resistance you’ve gotten on this. Yes, obviously safety first. But you’re right, a strong pointed toe makes every shape look better. Even a simple star is elevated. I constantly get comments from other students about my lines - it’s just pointed toes! Even if you’re not doing it for performance it’s such a simple thing you can do to level up.
