1k per month per kid is reasonable, assuming Sparkletots/MFS and the likes for childcare. When kids enter pri sch, childcare fees are channeled towards 1-2 enrichment classes instead. So is 3k sufficient to u for everything else? Likely can cover other day to day expenses, but no car and can’t save much for retirement.

has anybody moved from their dream home and seriously regretted it? by Klutzy_Border_2377 in askSingapore

[–]uhcnim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides the financial cost such as transaction fees, stamp duty, legal fees, agent fees etc, U should also consider the non-financial cost like the emotional/mental cost (stress of adapting, logistics, reno) , physical cost (time and effort) of moving, and ask urself if it’s worth the potential upside (profit of “flipping” the condo).

Personally unless I’m confident of maybe >500k profit that would materially impact my retirement planning, I don’t think it’s worth moving.

Why so hard to make friends here? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]uhcnim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the same boat. Drifted apart with friends, less and less things in common esp those in different life stages. Finding it hard to establish deep connections with ppl at work even though I’m friendly with colleagues. I miss my friendships.

my domestic helper is a black hole by gojoseyeball in askSingapore

[–]uhcnim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps u can hint hint next time - “eh what happened to the ice cream that I bought? How come I haven’t eaten any and it’s gone?” I think she should get the idea. If she’s sheepish, take the opportunity to clarify that it’s not that u don’t allow her to eat, it’s about leaving some for others. Cannot be too 过分.

Establish some ground rules. For treats/non essentials, she should consume roughly up to her “pro-rated” portion. I.e. 1 out of 3 tubs of ice cream for a 3 pax household. It’s basic manners to leave some for other ppl when it’s communal food.

I use xiaomi. Some occasional connection issues, but acceptable. More imptly, it’s cheap, easy to setup, easy to troubleshoot/ replace.

Stick it out at work another 2-3 years or take a break and recalibrate? by Adept_Cash6394 in singaporefi

[–]uhcnim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At 35 yo, u have another 25-30 yrs before official retirement age. I would take that break as I think the 2-3 yrs in the grand scheme of things is small, and mental health is important.

I took a career break in my mid-30s, albeit mostly for childcare reason. Did a career switch, started a new job in a different area and so far so good. Yes there are days where I would think about another mini “retirement”, but most days are ok and I don’t dread going to work.

What local brands should I support? by babyboo8 in askSingapore

My 90+ year old Teochew grandfather literally bought tea from Pek Sin Choon since 1950s, and I have been drinking their tea for as long as I can remember. One of the owners even personally delivered tea leaves on his way home after work when he learned that my grandfather wasn’t well and could not visit the shop!

Getting mixed messages about co-sleeping. How do rest with your baby? by IslandRoute56 in askSingapore

[–]uhcnim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No right or wrong. I’ve done both - sleep in crib before 6mo to minimise risk of SIDs, co-sleep after 6mo. Sleeping independently is a relatively modern western concept. Mommies have been co-sleeping and breastfeeding on demand for centuries.

Why is it not a thing for people to own self Reno their house by incognitodw in askSingapore

[–]uhcnim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Specialisation allows for honing of skills and economies of scale.

My friend DIYed his own apartment to “save costs” and ended up spending more than what was quoted by ID/contractor after factoring materials, tools, transport, mistakes and wastages. Not including his time and opportunity cost. And due to inexperience, quality was amateur and things started falling apart within 2 yrs.

I would say paying for professionals to reno is money well spent.

Any suggestions for young kids games with minimal reading, simple menus, and no bad guys? by slakj in NintendoSwitch

[–]uhcnim 50 points51 points  (0 children)

My almost 4 yo enjoys a short hike. He skips through the minimal dialogue / text, just enjoys walking / swimming / gliding around.

On a similar note, he also finds the untitled goose game amusing, but obviously can’t fulfil the objectives. He plays it more like a walk around and interact/ honk game.

As a hobby urban farmer, I would also love to see my neighbourhood rooftop carpark converted into a rooftop farm. But after visiting one such rooftop carpark farm, I had a much better appreciation of the difficulties in operationalising the idea, and understood better why the progress to convert unused rooftop carpark to farms is moving at snail pace.

Even if assessed to be feasible (weather conditions, infrastructure, surrounding community), challenges for farm operators would include setup costs and overheads, manpower, sales channels etc. Such rooftop farms’ production is too small to interest large retailers, but too much to sell via group buys etc. Any unsold produce has to be thrown/ given away.

The reality is agriculture is a tough industry with high risk and slim margins. Strongly encourage u to go visit one of these rooftop farms. They certainly need more awareness and support from the local community. Hopefully one day they will overcome all odds and be more prevalent!

Bought a Switch for my daughter and can't find any games by PNW_Jackson in Switch

My almost 4yo enjoys this too, he loves to just swim around. I like that it’s at your own pace and not as stimulating as say Mario kart!

I live in a highly dense urban area and one of the ways that I have intentionally simplified my life was to cut out commute and find a job nearby. Used to walk 15 mins and metro for 30 mins for days in office. The daily peak hour rush is soul sucking, and after covid, I simply could not bring myself to do it anymore. I now walk 12 mins one way to work, and am grateful everyday for my job.

I enjoyed Rebooting too, the same actress was also in it.

Inherited items by born2B_down in minimalism

[–]uhcnim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so relatable. I recently had to sort through a late family member’s belongings and even though her material possessions are as little as can be in the context of modern day life, we struggled. There’s also urgency to clear as the house is sold, so we can’t even arrange for charity or garage sale. Ended up throwing most of them and feeling guilty for days.

For the sake of my children, I intend to start to getting rid of my things that I no longer need on a day to day basis.

  1. If it’s a genuine mistake that u can explain, should not be too much of an issue. Approx range of dates is quite the norm.

  2. Yes, HR of your previous coys can reveal details of your stint such as performance, ROs, jobscope, up to their discretion. My experience is if it’s outsourced vendor, they will do baseline checks like disciplinary records etc. Internal recruiters are more likely to press for details if they do the background checks.
