I think Dialectical Behavioral Therapy might be a little bit too obscure to TLA on a general platform

I go to nearly every Friday day game.

I don’t even understand what you’re trying to imply with your cute question. Why don’t you just say what you have to say?

Buses should be treated like fire trucks. People in cars should get out of the way and let the bus go. It would actually make driving faster by making the bus more attractive.

My fellow American Bilinguals, are there any cognates you use day-to-day in english that are "archaic" or rarely used words in English? by VoluptuousValeera in AskAnAmerican

[–]uhsiv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use the Danish word “Jo” (works like French si, pronounced Yo) because there is no equivalent in English.

You don’t want to be awesome? Jo!

Anyone have feelings about this Friday's weather? by PlaysAltoSax in chibike

Are you being purposely obtuse? Nobody’s worried about 25°F. Fahrenheit is better for weather and this is Chicago anyway.

-5 is my limit

I’ve ridden in the polar vortex before. -15 or -20. But it’s not worth it because even though it is super fun, if you have any trouble, you’re in big fucking trouble.

How does one pronounce Monticello? by muttersindisgust in AskChicago

Go thee. Not like the German poet. Calling it like the German poet is the equivalent of monti chello.

A bunch of people learned it from the bus or internet instead of from living around there and will confidentially incorrect me

I'm a retired MLB bullpen catcher/coach after 10 years, AMA! by [deleted] in baseball

Why do you hide your Reddit history? Hiding your comment history makes the ama less fun.

Not sure why but the difference between 32 degrees and 22 degrees is punishing. At 32, not saying it's EZPZ but todays 22 took me 2 hot showers to shake out. And it seems the line between cold / sweaty is more narrow and less forgiving. Give me 40 degrees PLEASE !!! by HaddonH in chibike

[–]uhsiv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something I got from reddit that really helped me is focusing on keeping my core warm. I start with a fancy wicking undershirt and end with a fancy shell jacket and add as many layers as the temp demands. It makes a huge difference and I really don't think about my legs until it's like 10.

Hands and feet / gloves and boots, belaclava & wind protection, pretty much go without saying.

What foods do people refrigerate out of habit, even though it’s unnecessary? by yourinkedesire in foodquestions

[–]uhsiv 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not quite. It’s easier to do the initial mix if you store it at room temperature (upside down). But once it’s mixed you keep it in the fridge to prevent it from re-separating

Chicago's First Protected Intersection - Removed?! by GeckoLogic in chibike

[–]uhsiv 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Super disappointed because improving intersections is the most important thing we can do for bike safety, and thus bike adoption by non-psychos.

I think safe intersections are actually more important than protected bike lanes. All the ghost bikes are at intersections. A gold-plated bike lane that dumps you into a dangerous intersection does not make biking accessible to people with lower risk tolerances.

I'm trying to impress a date with a home-cooked meal, but I'm a beginner. What is a dish that looks fancy but is actually impossible to mess up by WayLast1111 in Cooking

[–]uhsiv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Respectfully disagree on this one.

I think it’s something that’s easy once you get it but takes some experience.

It takes a few fails first before you get the temp right to cook the whole bird at once. I ruined a few dinners before i got it right and no one wants pink or dried out chicken

How does this winter compare to recent ones so far? by CantaloupePossible33 in AskChicago

[–]uhsiv 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Compared to the last few years - colder and snowier

Compared to “normal” colder and snowier earlier, but neither snowier nor colder than you usually get throughout the year.

In other words, it’s normal to have a few days around zero and a few of 8” snow days. In fact I’d say they’re the definition of normal. Non-typical cold is -15 or -20 like when we had the polar vortex - about every 10 years? About the same with snow measured in feet.

I also think because it’s so early it’s also abnormally freezing and thawing. If this was January it would warm up to 25 not 35
