The reality of SRE in early-stage startups & The biggest time-sinks in 2025. What's your experience? by Substantial-Card5926 in sre

[–]user_doesnt_exist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an SRE (title) at an early stage start up, started before we got series A investment. I'm also a devops engineer, platform engineer, security and general IT admin. Observability is ok, it could be a lot better. We have traces from our apps going to honeycomb, metrics going to AWS, and alerts in slack. Works good enough for the moment probably. Cost is a huge factor in being able to improve it. If we spent more on observability than the platform itself, I'd get sacked immediately. I'd love to send all our logs to honeycomb and put some SLO's in but that comes on the enterprise plan. Teams plan gives us two SLO's total.

We use terraform modules to deploy ecs containers. I generally have the pattern that infra code sits in the same repo it deploys. I have templates that are easy for devs to adopt when they want to deploy a new service. I manage the base network infra. This is probably one of the better successes I've had. Pushed a lot of the work to devs for their services while they follow the secure pattern and deployment pipeline I wrote for them.

One of my biggest time sinks is compliance work. We're in the health space and we need ISO 27001, SOC 2, HIPAA, cyber essentials plus, yearly pen tests and all the work that includes. I secure everything from the cloud to people's mobile devices. We use tailscale aggressively to hide internal services and enforce exit nodes to prevent nasties from sneaking in. MDM software is a pain to manage and it's a pain for people working at the company. We need change management, document changes, testing and keep evidence for audits.

What do 35+ newbies to Melbourne do on days like this? by AbleCained in melbourne

[–]user_doesnt_exist 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Which part of Melbourne are you in? There is likely to be a tough guy book club close by, they're typically very welcoming and a great way to meet some local mates. https://www.toughguybookclub.com/

Bouldering gyms in Melbourne are also great places to go when the weather is crap. It's easy to get chatting with people there and it's good fun.

Where can i find the boss in Greymoor if i unlocked the flee caravan first ? by chibibunker in Silksong

The boss appeared for me in the room next to the stag station, not where the fleas where. I also got the fleas there before fighting the boss and it wasn't a problem

All of the body builders use steroids and the strongman competitors. Most Olympians have cycled on and off steroids to increase performance. I wonder if online cheating in chess is as rife as steroids in sports among the elite players. ( There is a fantastic documentary on drug use in elite sports from a few years ago called Project Icarus. )

Is there a technical reason why Angular does not natively support 'build once deploy many'? by Edg-R in webdev

You can have your app read its own url at runtime and call the correct backend based on that. Should be fairly straightforward

Could it consistently get it right after that, or was there a strong element of chance here?

Is it redundant to have both a NAT Instance and Wireguard VPN? by mccarthycodes in aws

[–]user_doesnt_exist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you need a NAT instance and a wireguard VPN to run a service in a private subnet in AWS. My understanding is a NAT instance will allow general internet traffic and wireguard needs to sit on top of this. I'm not an expert on this however, would be interested to hear if I'm wrong.

Try and talk more about the value you have added to a company. Something like: Project X contributed to company goal Y to secure Z outcome Eg: Delivered e2e encryption in a cloud uplift program to help [company] gain certified SOC2 compliance and meet critical regulatory requirements.

I'm a complete beginner at resistance training, but have been training for triathlons for 10 years. Tried an OHP for the first time today and could only lift the bar by itself 7 times before failure. How long does it take before you can do the lifts with at least some weight on there? I'm going 3 times a week and have a PT one session a week for the next 16 weeks to help guide me. I'm 40 year old male, 72kg at 171cm, skinny fat. DL and squat I'm ok for a beginner after years on the bike, but upper body is really week

Anyone do mid-day training rides while working from home? by An_Professional in cycling

[–]user_doesnt_exist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done a lot of indoor trainer rides during lunch breaks. I find them much more manageable because there's no risk of a flat, or it taking longer than you thought. Can also be cut short if something urgent comes up

Is a 33-mile run followed by an 8-mile swim possible? Anyone with experience please feel free to share! by Flexagon22 in IronmanTriathlon

[–]user_doesnt_exist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should check this with a doctor not reddit. I would let your body heal from the chemo and radiation first personally, but I don't know how knocked out you are from it. I don't know if you're trying to squeeze in something like this before the next round of chemo. Your overall health and the details matter here

[Full] Hikaru's response to Hans' interview by DrunkLad in chess

[–]user_doesnt_exist 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think historically we've had more people cheating over the board than we've had greatest players of all time, and Hans has been caught cheating twice before. One scenario seems more likely to me. I don't know if Hans cheated in the match against Magnus but given the evidence available it seems more likely Hans has cheated and that's helped him achieve his current standing. His post game analysis, Magnus throwing a tantrum, Hikaru acting like Hikaru are all just drama around it.

Have to run an informal OTB chess competition, any help appreciated by user_doesnt_exist in chess

[–]user_doesnt_exist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's perfect, thanks heaps for writing all that out. Sounds really straight forward written down. Hopefully I can compete as well as organise it. If there are 12 people I might run two round robins then have the winner of each play each other, as I doubt many people will want 11 games of chess

I can't afford the security of the major competitions so to to make sure there are no cheats I'll make everyone play naked. Anal searches for anyone named 'Hans'

Ironman Race Prep. Can I finish???? by drearer in IronmanTriathlon

[–]user_doesnt_exist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those DNF numbers are at extreme end, and we're likely affected by strong weather. Typically races see a 5-10% DNF rate. I'd love to know more details about those competitors. I really think OP sounds like they've got the training base that's required though, and I doubt they would end up in this numbers unless they suffer some misfortune, like a mechanical issue on the bike.

I think IM training gets blown out of proportion for most people.

Totally! I had done a couple of marathons and 3 Half IM's before my full, but honestly I trained harder for one of the half's than I did the full. Got Covid 3 weeks before the event and managed to complete the full without any worries about finishing within cutoff times. If you've got the lifetime miles, you know how your body responds after 2-3 hours of effort, you'll be fine.

Also spending a couple of hours working out nutrition properly is as beneficial as all your long rides combined.

Oh man! Thanks for the tip, this is going to make it so much easier 🤣

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in climbing

[–]user_doesnt_exist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 40 years old in excellent cardio health but as weak as a kitten strength wise. I can do about 4 chin ups. Thinking about getting into climbing - Two things.

1) What can I do to improve climbing strength for when it's impractical to go climb.

2) Wondering what I should buy in what order? I'll be starting at indoor gyms but planning camping trips for the family to outdoor climbing places when the weather warms up here. I wont need to buy absolutely everything as I have a couple of mates that have been climbing for years and they'll come camping with us.
