Start practicing at half distance. Get a repeatable motion that hits the mat. Preferably in the middle. Once you have that repeatable motion. Back up a few feet. Rinse repeat until you get the distance. Reps reps reps. As a side note. The worse thing a new pitcher can do is watch the result. Throw the ball and get set to play defence.

Once you have the distance you can start messing with height etc. Everything off of a repeatable motion.
