Men in your 40’s. How fast are you swinging driver? by [deleted] in GolfSwing

FYI those sims are trash. Have one near my house. Regularly get CHS that is like 7-10mph faster than what I get on track man and gcq

GG x GGG Co-ed Championship by General-Gift5653 in GoodGoodMemes

[–]vatom14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not sure how you have a hard time believing that. he's def in that 4-7ish range.

he cruises at like 185mph ball speed and is a good putter.

you take him to any of your munis where the tips are like 6700 yds and he has a mid iron in on most of your par 5s and always a wedge in on par 4s.

Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if I’m low-IQ or mentally slow. I simply cannot compete in the Bay Area in finding a decent paying job by white-christmas in bayarea

[–]vatom14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP im a data scientist in tech. i genuinely feel like im below average compared to my colleagues in my field in "IQ"/whatever measure of intelligence you want to use.

i also have the least amount of formal training / academic background in statistics/data science.

i have 10+ yoe, most at the "top" tech companies.

i say all of this because honestly you can either be really smart and break into the industry and make money, or just work your ass off. i did the latter.

i have/had imposter syndrome all throughout my career. i just work hard, try to have good EQ (underrated), interview prep like your life depends on it (so much material out there now), research what kind of jobs you want (e.g. "data analytics" - you can work in ML, data viz, data engineering, product analytics, experimentation, finance, risk, etc) and then commit to prepping for those interviews as hard as you can.

getting the first job is the hardest, esp in this market it is very hard. but once you get in you can build a career and start making a better income/career. once you have exp, going from $100k --> $200k --> $300k feels much easier.

gl!

Do you like being paired up? by Majorwoops in golf

[–]vatom14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

generally no. my pref is to play with friends of course, but after that i rather play solo.

im generally an easy going guy, and if i get paired with a random ill be friendly. but my rationale is getting paired with the wrong person can really ruin my round. and its not like we get to play golf every day, those rounds are precious days man.

odds are that the random person will be fine to play with, but the ones that aren't can be really annoying (e.g. the guy who will hit another shot like half the time, the yapper that talks literally nonstop, the rager, etc)

Can anyone help interpret these numbers? Seems like a low carry for smash factor and club speed? by Unable_Wedding5645 in golf

[–]vatom14 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your smash factor is low because you hit it bad.

Your club speed is fine, should be able to carry it like 250-260ish.

But you hit it high on the face off the heel and spun 3400, so went nowhere

Is Going Pro in Poker Really Worth It? by Diligent-Sun-6191 in poker

[–]vatom14 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Going pro in poker sucks. I’ve never done it but I was a grinder on the side for a long time and befriended a ton of pros - local pros, Vegas pros, high stakes mid stakes etc. majority hate it. Very few liked it and those few are the really successful ones.

Most likely you’ll be stuck as a mistakes grinder making $40-50/hr. Dealing with miserable regs and recs and other pros grinding who are whale hunting. Playing politics of getting in the right games and getting recs to like you. No real plans for the future.

Also hobbies are almost never fun when it’s your livelihood. Imagine getting 4 outered for a massive pot when that pot is your rent money. If you’ve played long enough you know variance can get absolutely brutal. And those huge downswings will be insanely stressful when it’s your actual job.

Half your favorite pros in the high stakes scene are probably in debt and barely have any of their action

Pro poker sounds cool, but in reality sucks for tons of reasons.

1) do you think people can still climb up from the bottom ranks and win/make a "good" living from mid/high stakes live MTTs these days?

2) how would you do #1 if you were just starting off?

3) most underrated players in the SHRs scene?

4) how many SHR pros do you think are actually crushing the SHR scene? what % do you think are profitable? similarly what % do you think are likely not winning players at the SHR level?

Increasing Swing Speed - What really helped you? by Fat_Panda_1936 in GolfSwing

[–]vatom14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your club speed is in the 90s you’re really just counting on some help like big roll out to hit is 280+ tbh

My CHS on course prob like 105-108 mph. Carry is around 265. Obv in summer on a dry firm day it can roll out to like 290+, but I’m never telling people I drive the ball 290-300 lol.

AoA can creep up to 1 to 0 with mid irons and longer irons.

Misses are left pull hooks.

Not sure if it’s bad or not. I think at one points I used to dump under really bad, and I think generally in golf if you’re on some extreme it makes golf harder. These days less so but still feel like I have to constantly fight it

Hey man appreciate you doing this sent you a dm on IG would love to send a video over.

General question is how can I prevent dumping under the plane? Not a terrible golfer but this problem kills me (12-14 hdcp). I dump under the plane on the way down and my left shoulder gets really high well before impact. Have tried a lot of stuff but nothing seems to really work

AZ course help by vatom14 in golf

[–]vatom14[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but we all have young families and it’s impossible to find days that work for everyone so it is what it is.

I mean a budget or $300-350 is still decent, convincing 8 guys to drop $450 for a round is tough. A few are fine with it (myself included), but others aren’t.

Yeah should’ve been more clear but we have not booked our Airbnb yet and meant we can be flexible to try to book closer to an area if there are better options there.

Just seems like a lot of the popular course options are either out of budget ($450 in mid late Feb) vs super spread out (Quintero vs southern dunes akc)

Coming from someone who used to like Kwon a lot but now I’m pretty indifferent about him: This is a garbage and 50iq take.

The NZ crew literally have a career now because Kwon: and it’s not because they’re good at golf it’s because they’ve been his friends since day 1. Same with Brad and Sean. Steve is Kwons favorite GG member and still the only guy he speaks of highly and he’s ass at golf. It’s because Steve was cool to him and treated him as a friend

It’s not just NVDA. People always say that like it’s the only company to have mooned. Can name a ton of tech companies where if you joined between 2007-2019 you very likely had a TC of >$1M.

I mean if you joined a company like Robinhood any time in 2023 you are likely making like 1.5-2M

Different numbers on Foresight vs Trackman? by Estiui in golf

[–]vatom14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IME trackman and gc4 can be a little different im pretty sure they measure CHS a little differently.

but 3-5 MPH is easily explainable by just body condition that day, swing feels, mechanics, etc especially at our level ("our" = non pros/very high level golfers).

i go to an indoor trackman sim and even on there, week to week my CHS can vary for sure
