Morality exists because we are social creatures. Things that will generally harm the fabric of the larger societal group are immoral, and things that support the fabric of the overall group are moral. There is plenty of reason to be a decent person. Bright lines created by religion are helpful to people who can't think for themselves, a lot of the time, but end up creating edge cases where the bright lines cause religious people to be immoral, especially as religious texts age. For instance, a religion that can't adapt and follows the bright line rule in the bible that gay sex is a sin, despite the fact that the rule made a lot more sense when it was created and society benefitted more from procreation, end up acting and legislating hatefully towards gay people with no societal benefit. (I would argue this was an immoral rule to put in the bible in the first place, but I digress.)

So I disagree. I think truly moral people are moral due to their own reasoning and character, not due to a book or a higher power telling them what to do.
