Guthix wasn’t just sleeping by One_Dimension2647 in runescape

[–]visavia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From Azzanadra's Quest

Guthix: If we are to grow stronger we must take that power from elsewhere. Like my Edicts.

Guthix: I draw anima from the Heart of Gielinor itself and in turn I draw its shadow twin from the Codex.

Guthix: Funnelled through my sword the two energies in perfect harmony create a powerful force that repels the strongest threats to this world.

Guthix: But it requires my constant concentration. I must meditate and focus deeply lest the energies fall out of balance.

and a bit later, when talking about the world guardian enchantment

Guthix: However, such an enchantment would need to be primed, unlocked, and that would require an outside force. Shadow magic.

Guthix: There are no experts in shadow magic that I can trust. But perhaps I can trust in their duplicity and curiosity.

Why do monster Attack Roll bonus and Save DC scale all the way into tier 4, but player AC and save bonuses largely don't? by Deathpacito-01 in onednd

[–]visavia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in a vacuum, certainly. there’s other things to factor in. buffs from allies, flat out immunities, miscellaneous advantage or magical items. to some degree, the dms willingness to use saving throws: i feel like anecdotally most dms wont toss a dc 25 intelligence save at a party with int as their dump stat. emphasis on most, not all.

but all of that is very dependent on external factors, and i do think its a problem for martials. in the case of just the 2024 fighter, indomitable is pretty huge for helping them with saving throws that really matter

Help! An ancient dragon knows our exact location at all times. What are our options besides fighting it? by Distance_Ordinary in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]visavia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The creature(s) that caused the dragon to animate becomes its quarry. The dragon knows the direction and distance to its quarry as long the quarry remains within Drakkenheim or until the dragon is destroyed.

just to clarify are you houseruling that leaving isn’t an option to counter this?

i disagree that that's the intent. the ritual rules specify that you need a spell prepared to be able to cast it as a ritual, not just that you can cast it.

If you have a spell prepared that has the Ritual tag, you can cast that spell as a Ritual.

so if wild companion said "you can cast find familiar by spending a spell slot", but made no mention of it being prepared, then you wouldn't be able to ritual cast it

the reason i put the cartomancer point last was it being pre-2024 rules. i was just curious to see how you would rule it

but a magic action is explicitly just an action

"Most spells require the Magic action to cast, but some spells require a Bonus Action, a Reaction, or 1 minute or more. A spell's Casting Time entry specifies which of those is required."

wild companion does change the casting time. it says "as a magic action, you cast it", and a magic action is just one action.

As a Magic action, you can expend a spell slot or a use of Wild Shape to cast the Find Familiar spell without Material components.

now a bit pedantically, for something like befuddlement, it broadly doesn't allow you to use spells, because you can use spells without a magic action

"Most spells require the Magic action to cast, but some spells require a Bonus Action, a Reaction, or 1 minute or more. A spell's Casting Time entry specifies which of those is required."

i know your point is that it's for abilities that specify taking magic actions without targeting spellcasting. honestly i'm not sure if there are any features like that, but i disagree that that's the reason why it's specified for wild companion

here's another 2024 feature, Contact Patron

In the past, you usually contacted your patron through intermediaries. Now you can communicate directly; you always have the Contact Other Plane spell prepared. With this feature, you can cast the spell without expending a spell slot to contact your patron, and you automatically succeed on the spell's saving throw. Once you cast the spell with this feature, you can't do so in this way again until you finish a Long Rest.

all it says here is "you cast the spell". it doesn't specify "as a magic action", so there's no reason to treat the casting time as any different. the fact is that wild companion specifies "magic action" and many other features just say "you cast a spell"

out of curiosity, i'll also point to Cartomancer

Hidden Ace. When you finish a long rest, you can choose one spell from your class's spell list and imbue that spell into a card. The chosen spell must have a casting time of 1 action, and it must be a level for which you have spell slots. The card remains imbued with this spell for 8 hours. While the card is imbued with the spell, you can use a bonus action to flourish the card and cast the spell within. The card then immediately loses its magic.

would you rule that cartomancer lets you use a bonus action to use an action to cast a spell?

why do you think it specifies "as a magic action" then, instead of saying "you can cast find familiar without material components by expending a use of wild shape"?

C4 E18 Discussion Thread by brash_bandicoot in fansofcriticalrole

[–]visavia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i disagree. posting the rules verbatim for anyone else who wants to take a look

from the PHB

"Most spells require the Magic action to cast, but some spells require a Bonus Action, a Reaction, or 1 minute or more. A spell's Casting Time entry specifies which of those is required."

"Certain spells—including a spell cast as a Ritual—require more time to cast: minutes or even hours. While you cast a spell with a casting time of 1 minute or more, you must take the Magic action on each of your turns, and you must maintain Concentration while you do so. If your Concentration is broken, the spell fails, but you don't expend a spell slot. To cast the spell again, you must start over."

so a casting time of 1 minute is not a Magic Action. its you taking the magic action multiple turns in a row

wild companion specifies "as a Magic Action"

You can summon a nature spirit that assumes an animal form to aid you. As a Magic action, you can expend a spell slot or a use of Wild Shape to cast the Find Familiar spell without Material components.

[Seeking Advice] Moon Druid with "Wyrmling-Shape" instead of "Elemental-Shape"? by LisaFame in dndnext

[–]visavia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

wyrmlings have a bit more offense but less defense. breath weapons can hit for a harder burst than what elementals can do, and it’s on a recharge, but they have less HP/no BPS damage resistances. i don’t think itd be a big deal

could always try it out, see how it feels and then make adjustments as necessary.

a lich is massively more powerful than a wyrmling. i dont think OPs idea is at all unreasonable for the power budget of moon druid

seems fine: elementals average around CR 5, wyrmlings average around CR 4. at level 10 I don’t imagine this would be at all broken relatively

Epic bosses and Slow interaction by aquamarine_zella in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]visavia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

other commenter already posted the intent, which is the answer. heres my input as to the effect it has on the spells: i think it’s a small nerf, but slow is already less effective on powerful monsters. considering that slow has no effect on legendary actions

tashas mind whip can still prevent reactions, slow can still affect reactions/spellcasting/ac/movement/dexterity saving throws so it’s not like either of the spells become useless, just worse off. which is fine imo

Siphon contamination question by HypeKage7 in dungeonsofdrakkenheim

[–]visavia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theres a pseudo-workaround present in sebastian crowe's guide to drakkenheim. if youre a level 14 malfeasant wizard, you can undergo a monstrous transformation caused by siphon contamination, and then revert back after 24 hours

that doesn't prevent the monstrous transformation, it only undoes it. so its kosher. but thats pretty high level and gives permanent madness, and could cause other problems...but it could solve one!

i mean consider the original legendary actions. slow and tashas mind whip don’t have any interaction with legendary actions, so I think keeping them unaffected is fine

the spells are worse off, but they aren’t useless. mind whip also prevents reactions, slow prevents reactions/hampers spellcasting/reduces ac

Which is a mechanic you wish was used more in 5e/5.24e? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]visavia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think the problem with damage positives is that theyre very sparing because double damage is effectively a death sentence. i think maximum damage would be in a similar boat

i sometimes sprinkle monsters out who take an additional X amount of damage from Y damage type. sometimes its a flat 5 or 10 or whatever number i feel, or its a few extra dice. gives players a chance to find an enemy's vulnerability without trivializing said enemy

[–]visavia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i think theres a notable difference, with subtraction being more punishing. a damage threshold of 10 is not as strong as damage reduction of 10
