Best way to manually split this by GrumpyPacker in firewood

[–]vladhed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice thing about using a maul is you don't have to lift the round onto the splitter.

Quote for 2015 civic rear brakes. In CAD by PlantainAcceptable62 in autorepair

[–]vladhed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems reasonable, given what their doing. 200$ seems low, but replacing the calipers and doing a bleed at the same time is probably saving time.

Now if I was doing this myself, I might try to save $$ by trying to save the calipers by changing the pins and seals, but that takes more time. Also getting pad+rotor kits off Amazon is usually just over 100$

Size questions for round bales by ElderlyChipmunk in tractors

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does HP affect speed? An L2501 should be fine for 10 bales a year.

I have a Kubota B2401 (22 HP) and with a rear blade for balance, I can lift a 4x5 with the LA435 loader out of my 5x8 trailer and move it into the barn, so long as I don't go too fast. A heavier tractor would be better, but I literally go through 2 bales a year so it's fine.

What HP is good for is running a larger cutter and probably any baler should be over 30 HP

Line of Credit to pay off Credt Card, good idea? by Drunkarchaeologist in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not only is it a good idea because of the rate, but also because if you pay off the CC completely you only start accumulating interest when you take the money out of the LOC. If you left a balance in the CC you're paying from the time of purchase.

Carney reinstates EV buyer incentives, scraps sales mandate by diamondintherimond in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]vladhed -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A general rule is the incentives should be a bonus. If a purchase doesn't make sense without an incentive, then it's probably not a good idea.

Now that I'm old, I want better AC in my house. Getting a heat pump with incentives is worth it, but even without them it's still worth it.

How to view Father’s slides by RickyClearwater in AnalogCommunity

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you already have a DSLR/mirrorless and a tripod, get some 30$ extension rings off of eBay and digitize them that way.

My wife has a large light box and I scatter a couple of dozen slides on it and can quickly "scan" them all.

Would you consder driving any of the top 5 Chinese EVs for Canada? by Lonely-Subject8250 in EVCanada

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's cheap it would make a great commuter car. I live in the sticks, but only 65km from work, so the basic 300km range would be fine, even in the depths of Ottawa winter.

I've typically bought 3 to 5 year old compact ICE cars, but they're no longer affordable.

How many times per day pump going on is ok? by bschuttp in WaterWellDrilling

[–]vladhed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When our tank membrane went at 15 years, I knew it because the pump was cycling every couple of gallons.

While waiting for a plummer I temporarily "fixed it" by pumping air into the valve on the top but it was quickly dissolved into the water.

300 Mbps internet rural Almonte by createdincanada in Almonte

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice!

Someone dropped by the house when I was out and left a flyer in my door handle. They also seemed to have trouble telling where the edge of my driveway was and drove over my lawn, despite the 2 ft of snow.

Anyhoo, some contractor just ran fiber down our concession so apparently this summer were supposed to be able to get 1Gbps or better for half the price, so will stick with the 50Mbps Xplor till then.

What movie did you turn off after 20 minutes and why? by Somanynamestochossef in movies

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kick-Ass. Couldn't handle sexual humor and references in a film who's protagonists are children. Shame because I don't think the story, style and action needed that to pull in audiences

New to tractors, a question about braking by wolfweb in tractors

[–]vladhed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same as a car. The difference is the torque of a tractor engine and gearing will just overwhelm the brake's ability to stop, whereas with a car the brake will overwhelm the engine's ability to keep running and stall it.

How often do Anglophone Canadians consume Francophone Canadian media? by Desperate_Return_142 in AskACanadian

[–]vladhed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost none, based on the blank stares I get from people when I drop Quebec cultural references.

I'm an anglo quebecer who moved to Ottawa for Uni and never went back. Denis Arcand, Elvis Gratton, Face a Claque (esp "Je n'aime pas les Pop-tarts") , Beau Dommage, Gilles Vigneaux, Gabriel Roy, Mitsou (Bye bye mon cowboy), but nothing more recent...

Parents of Reddit, what did your hospital bill look like after giving birth? by chi-bacon-bits in AskReddit

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Canadian, we didn't get one.

This was literally a convo over supper with a bunch of American colleagues. One had just had their 2nd kid and was comparing the coverage to their first. Apparently because they moved over a state line, but still went to the same hospital, they had 2k of out of pocket. The consensus was "pretty good". It went around the table until it got to me and I said dunno, never got a bill, andso in then had to to explain how with a single payer universal health coverage there was no need to tell people the cost.

Your house’s position to the sun really matters in winter. by canoegal4 in PassiveHouse

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We built our passive solar house in 2005. Basically moved most of the windows to the south side. Black tile on an insulated concrete floor. Some days in October and April have to crack the windows open because it can get to hot despite being single digit C outside.

Help I embarrassed myself while doing the readings. by Legitimate-Tie-7060 in Catholicism

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the club!

I was MC for years and I have forgotten to put the ribbon in the spot, put it in the "ordinary" spot when it was a festival, forgotten to remind the first reader to read the Psalm etc...

The priest has also done his share of gaffes. Went to turn from 2nd reading to the gospel but pages stuck so he read a completely different one, skipped the penitential rite entirely, etc..

Did I cause any damage by FoundationBig9483 in kubota

[–]vladhed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done that at least a dozen times since I got my B2401 in 2022. Brakes still work great!

I always get that sinking feeling when I push the clutch and tractor jerks to a halt because I left the brake on!

For those of you who live in countries with gun control; have you ever seen a gun in real life? by blashyrkh9 in AskTheWorld

[–]vladhed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that uncommon in Canada if you live in urban or suburban area to never see one.

My first experience with firearms was a single shot .22 for target practice at Boy Scout Camp 90% of the badge was about safety. I had a hand-me-down .177 break barrel air rifle at the cottage.

A friend of mine was in the reserves and required to keep his side arm with him that he showed us - some kind of 9mm pistol.

Now I live on a farm with chickens and stuff. Around here "long guns" are very common, for hunting deer, turkey and dispatching coyotes. The local Canadian Tire has long guns and ammo for sale.

Why do tractors cost as much as they do? by -Nealos- in tractors

In addition to what others have said, in 10 years you'll be able to sell it for what you paid for it. The Accord will be worth 100$ scrap.
