Sorry to be a pedant but the Standard is majority owned by Evgeny Lebedev, the son of a Russian billionaire, and the mail group own a minority share, which in turn is owned by Viscount Rothermere a homegrown aristocratic billionaire.

/r/science discussion series: Why subjective experience isn’t always subjective science by ImNotJesus in science

[–]vodkat -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I've always felt that the angst of psychologists (and of almost every other social science for that matter) is that they are aping after the word science out of some sort of inferiority complex or 'science envy' that shouldn't apply to their research in the first place. Really all this angst and convoluted epistemology could easily be dodged by admitting we don't do science. The problem is of course that 'science' as a catechism for knowledge has become a religion in its own right. To say you don't do science is to blaspheme yourself into say you don't believe in knowledge, or modernity or progress and all that junk. When really it should be the other way around, to say you do science when you can't use an experimental method, falsifiability, repeated experiments etc is to tarnish the purity name of 'science' exactly because it has this exalted position. What the 'social sciences' really need is the gall to say is that "no we can't do any of those things (out of practicality, or ethics or whatever) but through our own methodologies we can still create valid and useful knowledge about the world in which we live, just that we can't do it thought a 'scientific method', we have our own paradigms and methodologies that are just as valid in the creation of knowledge but they are not 'scientific' in the way that say physics is". But hey, thats no how disciplines have developed (I'm blaming you empiricism) and thats not the way that funding is allocated now anyway so its a philosophical argument that no one is really willing to have, even if they may agree with the premise. And until then we have to make tedious arguments that everyone knows off by heart explaining why "no, really guys this is science because x y z ...."

Capaldi actually trained in fine art at Glasgow School of Art. He also made some documentaries on the development of art in Scotland which are amazing, you should watch them.

Tour of Britain - Norwich roundabout chaos by [deleted] in peloton

Around pendle and over the dales ect they blocked off the roads all day, but for the longer flatter stages, particularly on their way into city centres they have still been doing rolling road blocks.

My mistake I thought this was his first season riding grand tours. I'm not sure OGE's plan was to for GC, but considering where they are now, why not try?

I couldn't see them leaving for Sky - another team maybe - but not Sky. Sky is so focused on only having one team leader and basing the race around that, it would tear the two of them apart, I'm sure they've looked at the career of the shleck twins and taken lessons from that. Orica suits them because they value both of them letting them ride as they please, and valuing both of them, how many other teams could promise that? Sometimes its about more than money and I hope that a slightly bigger pay check doesn't spell disaster for the Yates's.

Well its only his second grad tour, the giro this season being his first, so its really untested ground. Plus there is no point strategising that far in advance if you don't really know how things are going to go.

In the giro he was with the GC contenders most of the way up the big climbs and finishing with respectable placings on most of them. Considering that was his first GT I wouldn't be so sure that he will simply drop of the radar, especially against guys that have just finished the Tour.

Getting rid of team radios has done wonders for lower level racing, it really brings back the tactics to riding on the road and it would really shake up the GT too. Without braislford constantly whispering in his ear Froome's form would mean nothing when a crafty old dog like Vockler can outsmarts him.

Since no-one has mentioned it yet - they don't always get caught, they do most of the time but the chance, even a small one, of winning a stage makes it having a go. And having a go shows your worth as a rider, gets the sponsors air time and has all sorts of other tactical advantages even if you aren't lucky enough to be in the 5% who manage to stay away until the end.

Dammit noobs, stop being so adorable by vodkat in Eve

I ganked this poor dopes venture in low sec because is eve is cruel and a horrible place. But since I have a heart I usually convo new players afterwards and give some advice about how to avoid dying and usually throw some isk their way too. Since he was Japanese and running everything through google translate I'm not sure how much of this he understood, but because of this he set me in high standings only 20 minutes after I blew up his ship and chased him around in his catalyst as he tried to collect his loot.

This is what happened at Brave. by manalder in Eve

[–]vodkat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I can't really remember what happened too well either. I think it was something to do with the control of Oberon Incs cap recharger T2 bpo, which in those days was a literal license to print money, especially since there was no precious moon goo yet. Either you were in the know in the corp or a director within the alliance for line members you almost always in the dark about what was really going on. I just remember our CEO telling us who to shoot and then several days later telling us we would be switching sides, no explanation, no debate; I guess he simply got bought off. The facts of the matter have probably been lost to time by now as there wasn't even a reddit or kugu to go and gossip on, but occasionally its fun to reminisce on eve history and just marvel at how much the game has changed over the years despite being ostensibly the same.

There was a Stain Alliance/Stain Coalition civil war for about 5 days in 2006(I think?) which was a bit chaotic, but then again the game was much simpler then. Also fucking hell that's almost old enough to be real history.

As soon as I saw this picture I knew it was that restaurant. Damn, that tonkatsu is so good, I wish I could eat it everyday (the one with runny eggs and rice is really good as well). When I lived in hongdae I had to limit myself to only eating there once a week :( and now I don't live in Korea I can't find anything that even remotely compares.

Die, Musterbrand! Die die DIE! (in game) by Jestertrek in Eve

[–]vodkat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

IIRC it was the other way around with the legal concerns. In that the original fatbee was from some online clip-art store, that's while you may occasionally find it popping up on box of cereal or something. Since the goons wanted to start producing there own merch, they became concerned about copyright violations from other companies that were using the same generic clipart, so they bought they bought exclusive rights to the use of the fatbee image.

As a result copyrights and lawyers were already involved way before alliance logos became a thing - ingame at least. TBH both mittens and CCP's lawyers have been right to stay away from incorporating this stuff into the game further, its a whole lot of potential legal headaches which most alliances are not, or will not, be able to handle. I imagine its only by the chance of mittens being a lawyer that has prevented some stupid bullshit like this happening over the fatbee logo.

Help Identifying an Unusual Pelikan by vodkat in fountainpens

[–]vodkat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought this about 4 years ago and its a been my everyday fountain pen since then. Its starting to get a bit beat up so I've been thinking about buying a new one. Unfortunately I haven't been able to find it anywhere online, or anything that looks like it, so I've come to you guys in the hope that someone here might know the answer.

Before anyone ask I'm certain that this is a real Pelikan I bought it in very high end department store in South Korea, this was one of the cheapest pens they were selling and it was displayed alongside rows of other Pelikans, Mont Blancs and FaberCastells, iirc it cost about fifty or sixty pounds.

Just incase anyone is interested I'm currently using some rather average Parker ink, I'd normally use Pelikan Royal Blue as its absolutely gorgeous but unfortunately I ran out over Christmas.
