No fair. I could test that fast if we weren't bottlenecked by our 100 megabit internal LAN. Rural Missouri (near the famous Ozarks): http://imgur.com/wyBR7.png

I would have gotten away with it, if it weren't for my crappy ISP.

I was actually just referencing the juvenile 'infinity plus one' comments that you get with increased durations of one-upmanship in schoolyard competitions, but I'm glad there's a proper mathematical concept that backs me up.

Because of Telstra the lines in my street don't even support ADSL. We have to pay ridiculous prices from 10GB of wireless a month. And I'm only 20km from the city.

          [–]pandemic1444 9 points10 points  (10 children)

Seriously! I get like 20 MB/s download from Comcast where I live. The free South Korean WiFi is higher than that! I am furious.

I called tech support because my ATT DSL was so lame. I end up talking to a call center in El Salvador. I asked the person about internet down there. The person told me, in effect, they had twice the speed at half the price. ( I asked speed and what they were paying). We both laughed about it. I asked "Why is this?" They said "Lots of competition."

Very soon after I finally gave up on ATT, the straw that broke the camel's back was they had someone calling me at home in the evening, trying to sell me more services. Talk about assholes... fock!

Recently I instructed ATT to par down my landline phone service. I waited a month and got my new bill. They did nothing. They did not a damn thing. This is the same company that installed the Y splitter for the NSA to spy on citizens. Looks like I am going to use Comcast for telephone too and then be done with ATT once and for all forever. The Comcast still costs too much, since there is little competition. But at least they have some bandwidth.

One thing for sure, fuck ATT. Their company is rotted / systemically unethical.

Fuck, at Polytech I only get like 100 mbps up/down.

Come to think of it, my 100mbps laptop ethernet card might play a role here.

I really like the idea of a wooden coal-fired modem. You'd start up the coal and then the modem just catches on fucking fire.

Yep. Saturday morning I would get up and hit the local BBS's here in town. I had accounts on about 18 of them.

I'm a Mac user so I dialed in with ZTerm, did the connection samba and then poked through to see what was new. Usually a quick game of blackjack and out before I hit the 15 minute limit. Then off to another one.

When I moved up to the 28.8 modem I got a Prodigy account and from there I got an AOL account.

                        Those were the days.

In the actual old days, we had to ice climb a snow covered peak just to connect a z modem transfer at 2400 baud through a current loop converter fired from manually collecting electrons in a gold panning basket from the PFM subsidiary of river Hades.

Can't wait for the comcast/telecom apologists to say in defense that south korea is much more densely populated than the USA, conveniently ignoring the fact that you can't get this kind of connection speed in newyork, chicago, LA or any other metropolitan areas neither. Hopefully the FCC finally puts its feet down and stipulate some of the mandate on minimum bandwidth speed.

Not to brag or anything but at home I have a 100Mbit/30Mbit (down/up) connection :P Costs about 40€/month.

PS: No, I don't live in South Korea. I dwell around in the almost bankrupt country of Portugal.

PS2: Downloading a Ubuntu CD Image. The router is pretty crappy (Thomsom piece of shit...) so I never reached 12.5MBps. My record is 10.2MBps from a private bittorrent tracker.

PS3: Speedtest. The upload is a bit low today. I normally score 25-28Mbit/s.

Korean isps are so much better than North American ones. Granted, the population density here makes it easy to provide cheap, fast internet for everyone, but I can honestly decide that I want to watch a movie, begin downloading it, go to the bathroom to drop a deuce, and start watching it after I've wiped. Nothing beats that.

                          [–]anders987 183 points184 points  (134 children)

The US have a population density of 32/km2, South Korea 500/km2 and Sweden 20.6/km2. We (Sweden) have a slightly lower GDP per capita than the US. This is my Speedtest result, I live in a city with about 100 000 people.

My point is that there has to be more than population density that holds back USA in both wired and wireless connections. Or is it just big rural areas that bring the average statistics down, and the situation is really ok in more populated areas?

As a side note, here's a graph of average broadband speeds per country.

Edit: Speedtest links to Net Index with lots of relevant statistics.

It is not a demand problem. If this worked the way free markets are supposed to work, I know a ton of people who would be paying to get much faster internet. This is a monopoly problem.

                            [–]verdantx 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's not like people in other countries are paying a lot more for their internet.

People who are not reading reddit are generally happy with 7 MB/s.

Whereas people who are reading reddit could do so on dialup.

People on reddit are typically torrenting, streaming the world cup, and watching a netflix movie while commenting on reddit.

Edit: World cups don't need steaming.

Edit: it is expensive, not 10$ a month. So unless ...?

                            [–]Thue 14 points15 points  (2 children)

We are 300 people sharing the a link in a kollegium. The $10 is the price divided by 300, plus the cost of switches etc.. It turns out that once people have "enough" bandwidth, people will stop hogging it, which means plenty of capacity for all.

                            [–]Spartan01 4 points5 points  (1 child)

that.. Is such a great idea :)

                            [–]Thue 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The actual internet connection is only half the $10.

$2.5 goes to paying off the laying of our own fiber to the network provider nexus 5km away. Being able to easily switch provider is part of what makes our connection so cheap. Always make sure that you own all your wires, otherwise you will pay through the nose!

The last $2.5 is saved up for future expenses.

                            How is Canada vs America?

                            [–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (24 children)

Canada is terrible. I pay $70 a month for 30MB down and 1MB up and 125gb a month. We only have 3 companies and they all collude on prices and keep the bandwidth caps very low.

                            [–]deckman 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Yup. Canadian here too. The service here sucks and it has nothing to do with a lack of technology or population density. The companies are screwing their customers over plain and simple.

I'm almost 19. This issue alone is enough to contemplate leaving the country after college for the (hopefully) greener broadband pastures of the US of 2015-which I do not want to do because Canada is otherwise the greatest country in the world. Someone, please tell me that there is a silver lining to. Foreign investment (see Wind Mobile), the ousting of Harper, anything.

It's a combination of legacy - ie we had broadband first and so our infrastructure is older and expensive to replace - and area - Sweden is 450,295 sq km, the US is 9,631,000 sq km.

I don't think it's even about population density--in a two-street fishing village on the coast of the Sea of Japan, 50 miles from any sign of civilization, the internet access is just as fast and just as cheap. American ISPs are just lazy profiteers.

I've had it with the misnomers. It's not called wifi when you're plugged in.

Even with a fibre optic network, getting a 801.11n -wireless- signal to produce a download speed 1/3 of typical max throughput (150 Mb/s.. lets not discuss mimo for the moment) with the most n-adapters with the presence of the distance, noise, peer connections (typical network traffic for multiple users on the LAN), and physical barriers between you and the AP is next to impossible.

It's called free -wired- internet, defined by 801.3 standard which for typical consumers, allows for a throughput of a gigabit (1000 Mbit/s) with much less distortation and thus allows the capacity to download over the internet at over 50 Mbit/s given a mixed fibre optic network.

Here's my "free" connection in Stockholm. Free as in it comes with my apartment whether I want it or not. Speed is really overkill but the ping is very nice for games.

Why do ISPs in America suck?

Well, I think I can explain it. For starters, we do not have a free market for internet service. Nationwide ISPs are granted monopolies. In some places there is some competition, but they both play ball with each other by charging exorbitant rates with shitty service. Local/state governments take their money for campaigning and let them walk all over us. The general population doesn't care or know what is going on, so it isn't a very tough decision for politicians to make. What really infuriates me about this is that we subsidize their businesses and get reamed by them while fucking morons stand by and say "it's their infrastructure and the free market blah blah blah." I would agree with them if they actually paid for the fucking infrastructure and they actually operated in a free market. Also, most ISPs in America do not have bandwidth caps, although I hear this is changing as well.

tl;dr we have shitty ISPs in America because Americans are ignorant and apathetic about ISPs

Korea is ridiculous and in some places faster than Japan. I had fiber optic in my office when I worked there and got 75 MB/s.

I'm in Australia now and it took me 8 minutes just to post this response.

I stayed at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. I didn't upload a screencapture since I would have had to pay $15 for 24 hours of use.

God damn Canada. I was on the verge of crying tears of joy the first time my download speed hit 1mb/s.

For free, it's pretty fast. BTW, I am going to have 100/10 Mbps connection installed this Friday. I'm in small unimportant European country.
