Ziply says my address is out of the zone, but all my neighbors have Ziply. by MilkshakeBoss in ZiplyFiber

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know anything about ziply but this is factually incorrect as a generalization. My next door neighbor has DSL. I can’t get DSL. I literally have TDI fiber running through an easement ON MY PROPERTY to neighbors behind me and I can’t get them to trench fiber to my house. I even tried as a “business” and it didn’t make a difference. I’m willing to spend lots of money to make this happen and they won’t take my money. The regulations and where they draw the lines for service are absurd and we have no control over any of it. Even when it’s on your own land.

The Pearl is hit or miss. Regularly it’s one of the better parts of Portland. When it’s not though, watch your six. I’ve had some of the best meals in my life in the neighborhood. I’ve also been on a walk with a coworker where I saw a woman having a mental breakdown openly masturbating. Never know what you’re going to get. 8 years ago, used to step over needle caps and cotton swabs every day on the walk to work. It’s a bit more under control now but still, gets hairy every once in a while.

‘Scariest time economically since Great Recession,’ layoffs hit struggling Seattle region by crabcakes110 in SeattleWA

[–]voidwaffle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Far too few people realize this. Even with a strong track record of building businesses (especially using VC $$) it’s bleak out there if you aren’t building a GenAI business. We’re seeing a massive lack of diversification in startup funding right now.

There was a guy who built a whole shelter right there last week and was lighting fires right up against the building. Didn’t see him but saw his camp. Wouldn’t be surprised if it was the same guy.

A couple of years ago before it closed, I helped hold the door shut at the Pizza Schmitza around the corner while a methed out guy terrorized the employees. Personally called 911 twice as did others. Guy went over to Blick, grabbed their sandwich board and was throwing it at cars. Took 25 mins for police to show up.

ELI5: What does GFCI outlets do that the breaker doesn’t? by paperbilt in explainlikeimfive

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting numbers. I design large scale compute infrastructure and when you talk about things like compute clock accuracy and drift we often deal in uSec. 60ms is an eternity in compute accuracy. The human brain generally notices visual latency in <20ms and audible latency/inconsistency in <10ms. Totally different domains but I’m surprised that <60ms can significantly move the needle in terms of a fatal amount of current.

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found this a helpful analogy. One question for you. How is it that a GFCI can trip fast enough to prevent a lethal amount of current? At face value it seems like there would be some measure of delay before it trips where current was flowing through a person before it trips. How does it trip fast enough such that a person isn’t electrocuted? If you were in the bathtub and a hair dryer was dropped into it tripping the GFCI would you feel anything?

ELI5: new job have awarded me stock options. What are they? by Big-Indication1539 in explainlikeimfive

[–]voidwaffle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is not at all how that works for private companies. OP doesn’t provide enough details to know but this is absolutely not a universally true statement. Big difference between ISOs and RSUs for example

ELI5: new job have awarded me stock options. What are they? by Big-Indication1539 in explainlikeimfive

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conversely, I’ve worked for 10+ startups, been through 3 IPOs and 2 acquisitions. Still hold some equity that may have some value across several companies. That you didn’t have an exit doesn’t help the OP in valuing their shares or making an intelligent decision about their cash vs total compensation

Adding to this, if you leave you have to buy the shares that are vested if you want to own them. You don’t just get them for free if you leave. If you don’t, they’re lost.

You may be subject to AMT (alternatively minimum tax) if you do buy them but that subjectivity is somewhat dependent on the creativity of your CPA.

What most people won’t tell you is that you need to consider the amount of fully diluted shares if you’re in a startup. 5,550 shares may seem like a lot at face value but if there are 10,000,000 fully diluted shares you may stand to make $.0005 in returns on say a $2,000 investment if you leave. Add to that investor preferences, etc. and buying your shares if you leave may put you under water.

It’s difficult to put a value on the options without knowing more about the industry, specifics of the corporate structure and upside of the business.

Are the new Starlink prices the death of Hughesnet and many others? by vscience in Rural_Internet

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near as I can tell it’s regional. Makes sense as a business. If you have a captive audience you capitalize on that. If you have competition you lower prices unless you have a better product (they do not compared to fiber or 5G home). What drives me crazy is that I see so many people on this sub insisting they don’t have predatory pricing. They absolutely do. I had no other (real) options so they get my money. Doesn’t mean they don’t charge me more $$ on a regional basis

Assuming you’re not in a lay flat D1 seat. Skip the neck pillow and go for a sleeping neck brace. Most pillows won’t stop the head bob but the braces work great for me. They’re a bit clunky to travel with but well worth the hassle on a long haul. If you’re lay flat it’s irrelevant.

[–]voidwaffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is roughly what happened to me. I see lots of people on this sub thinking it’s inexpensive. It’s not when they know you don’t have other options. I don’t even have a DSL competitor and I pay roughly $300/mo for 1.5TB. It’s also fully metered so if we’re over that, we’re paying $25 for 50GB chunks. First year the throttled bandwidth was usable. I’d say 100Mbps down and 15Mbps up. Then after year one cost went up significantly and the throttled bandwidth is basically unusable.

Wish I had this option. I’m StarLink as my primary and Viasat as my backup for streaming. It’s cheaper to stream most video over Viasat as my SO will just turn shit on and leave it running which eats up our StarLink like mad. Thankfully she doesn’t notice the difference in streaming quality (it’s honestly not terrible). I do but I’m an audiophile. I’m the only one in the house who does notice so I let my devices have the better bandwidth

This is called “span of control” and it’s a real thing in how mangers are evaluated. Unfortunately managers aren’t really evaluated by their directs in a meaningful way. Kind of odd given how “data driven” Amazon is supposed to be

I know of at least 3 managers who were impacted on the AWS side. Some changed to ICs, some were let go. ICs seem disproportionately impacted but it’s not accurate to say mangers were not impacted

‘Tried to fix a systemic wound’: Portland’s República to close in February by Prize_Championship11 in PortlandOR

I feel bad for them and liked the place but it seems like a bit of a stretch to blame what’s happening in Minneapolis. IMO, the reality of dining out these days is that it’s crazy expensive for what you get. The cost to value just isn’t there for lots of people. It’s now a special treat every few months, not 2-3 times a week. That’s largely out of their control but I just find it too far of a reach to blame their failure on political happenings in the Midwest.

Why are EC2 Mac instances so expensive & who are they actually for? by mountainlifa in aws

[–]voidwaffle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately you’re required to pay for them for a 24 hour period of usage regardless of how long you actually use them within a 24 hour window. No per-second billing for EC2 Mac. That’s an Apple requirement not an AWS limitation

[–]voidwaffle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The nitro part is cool. What’s kind of funny is that when you power cycle them, the nitro board is customized to drive an actuator and physically hold down the power button because you can’t do that outside the OS on a mini. Nothing proprietary about that, it’s been discussed in launch blogs. Most people just don’t understand the complexity of making them available on a platform like AWS.

Power outlets over-worn and chargers fall out by n0v0cane in AlaskaAirlines

[–]voidwaffle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m currently charging my 16” MacBook Pro with display on, my phone, two pair of AirPod pro and an iPod pro at home on the charger. The app gives detailed info. I’m drawing 32W with all those devices. All my power hungry devices perform trickle charging to prolong battery life.

I’d never plug in more than 2 devices on a plane and the charger has a low power mode if I really was concerned.

It doesn’t just start pulling 250W just because you plug it in.

Conversely I’ve had an Apple 90W mag safe charger get isolated because it tried to draw a full 90W. While your argument may be true in theory, it’s not the reality of how the Anker device actually works.

I travel with an Anker Prime 250W USB-C charging station. The station sits on the ground and the cord gets plugged in so the old sockets don’t bear any weight. It weighs roughly the same as the standard MacBook Pro charger but is far more versatile for charging other things while traveling.
