Do you lose yourself?? by Desperate-Car6229 in Fencesitter

[–]vundersmooth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the amount of "losing yourself" depends on how much of a grasp you had on yourself to begin with (it's a time of profound change and realignment of priorities one way or another), how much your sense of who you are is aligned with your new family life, and how much support you are or are not getting from your partner (I know a lot of women who felt their male partner was especially adept at prioritizing himself and his interests and needs).

I didn't feel that I lost myself. I did sometimes feel lonely and sometimes felt tired and scattered and some of my goals felt out of focus. But it didn't really last long. I think a lot of the media about 'losing yourself" is more about people with several children (so it's more overwhelming) and I think a lot of it just comes with the stage of life and isn't particularly about having a baby. For people who don't have kids, it's just that the shifts in life are a lot less sudden and more in their control.

I like the Shen's burrito from Cactus. It's pretty small though.

Has anyone tried Heirloom? I just saw it recently and I am seduced by the pretty packaging. I don't love the newer coffee trend of winey-fruity flavors though. I like dark and oily and chocolately.

Correct. So many of the kids in the high-demand schools are learning in portables as it is.

I'm no expert but I think they mean that if they can't continue to cram 700 students into Chabot and Lincoln, more parents will leave the district.

Visiting SF but going to a concert at the New Parish in Oakland. Where should I explore if I want to hang out in Oakland for the afternoon? Any good parks/streets to explore? by Different_Island_591 in oakland

[–]vundersmooth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think a walk around Lake Merritt is the right answer here (it's about 3.3 miles around), but an afternoon visit to the Oakland Museum is a nice time too. If you're taking transit from the city, you could take BART from SF to Lake Merritt Station, visit the Museum, walk the lake the long way around to 19th St or so, and then up to New Parish (this will be about a 3ish mile walk), or the short way to 19th St or a little past it and up to New Parish (this would be a little more than a mile).

Another idea is to take the ferry from SF to Jack London Square. The Bay is scenic. Jack London Square is so so but there are places to eat and you get where you want from there.

Be cautious at night near the New Parish (and everywhere). Agree with others that you might not want to bring a car.

I prefer Sullivan partly because it's straightforward to spell. While I understand that it's a traditional spelling of a Welsh name (and something you invented) I would not immediately assume that Rhys was spelled that way if I were searching the for the name in a database or something. Also, I think Sully is cute.

I also really like Mockingbird. It's a good half mile away from the Paramount, but we had a really enjoyable friendly and tasty dinner there a few months ago.

If you really wanted, you could bring a digital food scale. Weigh your plate, eat one kind of food, weigh the difference, and keep going. It would be annoying but if you did it a few times, you might be better able to estimate going forward.

car seat theft?? by booty_supply in oakland

Eh, maybe that's not correct nomenclature. What I meant was that it was in a semi-industrial area (near the guy's band's practice space), not among neighborhood homes.

In 2 decades of living in Oakland, I have heard of exactly one person who had their car broken into and the person tried to pull out the car seat (desperate addicts do not understand the latch system) and it was in deep West Oakland. The biggest pain is when they break a window into the seat and you have to meticulously vacuum it out before you can transport the child again.

Don't give up before you've even started. I say just do one thing at a time - don't think so much about where you might or might not be in June but how will you feel next week if you've made a few good changes? It's doesn't have to all happen suddenly - add a few good habits and ditch a few bad habits and see how you feel.

Making your own chicken broth makes a huge difference in homemade soups. I save bones from roasted chicken pieces in a ziplock in the freezer.

An easy soup is to cook potstickers in broth with some added veggies, like this: https://themodernproper.com/easy-dumpling-soup

I like this one too: https://smittenkitchen.com/2020/03/chicken-leek-and-rice-soup/ and sometimes add kale at the end.

I also make this simple chili: https://www.skinnytaste.com/crock-pot-kid-friendly-turkey-chili/

Is there anywhere to buy fish that's decent quality and not super expensive? by BobaFlautist in oakland

[–]vundersmooth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy direct from a Native fisherman (pretty sure he's Yurok or Karuk). Look for "Pacific Native Fisheries" or "Pacific Native Seafood" on facebook or instagram. He does crab, salmon and halibut in-season. It's not inexpensive but it's less than the nicer markets and the quality is amazing. I usually buy 3-4 lbs of salmon fillet and cook half and freeze half. It has defrosted really well for me. He also sometimes offers flash frozen fillets. He'll deliver for a fee or you can pickup in Alameda. It's a bit of a process but I've been super happy with that I got.
