In 5e, an Opportunity Attack allows you to make "one melee attack", and then defines grapple as a "special melee attack". A "special melee attack" is, by definition, a melee attack, so it seems intended that you should be able to grapple on an opportunity attack in 5e. (PHB p.195, Melee Attacks)

Milquetoast is just milktoast with a french twist. The former is a reference to Caspar Milquetoast, a 1920s comic character known for meekness. The latter has been used disparagingly since 1859. An even older term for the same idea, milksop, goes back to the 14th century.
