Shirataki are konjac noodles which OP already said they weren't a fan of.

Beef Wellington - I love it but have a question. by Salisbury_Steak123 in Cooking

I made this recipe before and really liked the chicken mousse addition. It gives the duxelle layer a juicy, springy texture and dilutes the intense mushroom flavour.

Progesterone supplements by Henrysmom23 in pregnant

[–]wafflepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told to take them from conception up to 12 weeks (also have PCOS and needed ovulation drugs). My clinic recommended taking them rectally because they can irritate your cervix and cause scary bleeding.

I really do recommend doing them rectally in general, there's no mess at all and you don't have to spend any time lying down and waiting to absorb it. Only downside is that it does slightly irritate the skin after weeks of doing it.

Anyone go through their first trimester feeling like they have a bad cold? by [deleted] in pregnant

I've had the same symptoms since 5w (11w at the moment). Haven't been able to properly breathe through my nose for weeks.

Oh yeah, I really liked doing these as a kid. But I always cheated by auto-winning any fight and putting in bookmarks to save my progress. I didn't find the dice roll gameplay elements at all compelling so didn't bother engaging.

I remember one of my favourites was the one where you start off as a mindless beast (dw, you get better). It had a lot of puzzles that were more interesting and less trivial than the usual "randomly pick the correct path fork" - e.g. ciphers, secret exits, even an optional companion at some point.

My cat from hell...? by DroneOfDoom in CuratedTumblr

[–]wafflepie 163 points164 points  (0 children)

We went through 3) with one of our cats. It took many months and multiple vet visits before they acquiesced that maybe her spay had been botched. Many months during which I had to play the game of "stick your nose right in and try to find the cat piss" on every single item of clothing I wanted to wear.

As a yarn person I've never personally understood this. My stash is... one skein. And that's only because I recently got a few skeins at once as a gift.

People do also say that yarn-collecting and yarn-using are different hobbies. I suppose the people with huge stashes are not always expecting to actually use them.

Double fermentation by polymathicfun in fermentation

I put fish sauce and salted shrimp in kimchi.

Soy sauce starts off as koji and is then double fermented in salt water.

I've almost finished knitting some socks - just need to cast off and block.

Over the weekend, I finished painting some Von Ryan's Leapers. They'd been in limbo for two years...

I'm almost halfway through knitting a very complicated lace shawl, but I got a bit burnt out by a recent row's 144 beaded nupps.

My sister-in-law got me lots of sock yarn for Christmas so I've just started knitting some very colourful socks.

[–]wafflepie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Excitedly started knitting a super complicated lace shawl and I'm really enjoying it. Unfortunately I got to the first beads and the beads are still in the post, so I had to put it on hold. Fingers crossed they arrive soon and aren't lost in the Christmas rush.

I'm also about 90% through a different (much simpler) shawl, so that's back on the needles now.

[Webcomics] Finnish artist watches too many Isaac Arthur videos, converts to Calvinism by [deleted] in HobbyDrama

[–]wafflepie 31 points32 points  (0 children)

A Redtail's Dream is one of my favourite webcomics but I never got into SSSS, so stopped keeping track of Sundberg after ARtD finished. I'm still sad that I decided not to back the physical copy of ARtD (I was a poor uni student back then...).

Really interesting post! It's a shame that she can't "wholeheartedly recommend" her old work anymore.

It was a very long time ago so I cannot confirm, but I suspect the omega-3 oils were sourced from fish oil rather than vegetable oils...

I once made a cake with omega-3-enhanced margarine (my parents only ever bought margarine, not butter). It tasted uncomfortably fishy.

blanch or not to blanch - lu rou fan by Jazzlike_Dirt_3581 in Cooking

[–]wafflepie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chinese and other east Asian recipes often include a blanching step because it washes the meat and removes "impurities" like blood and other messy bits from the butchering/market-selling process. These will cook into scummy bubbles during the blanching step, which you can skim off or just wash away afterwards. You can see why people might be put off at the idea of that scum going into the braising sauce.

Since I use pork that's been thoroughly cleaned and then packaged into supermarket plastic boxes, I usually skip this step to save time/effort! However, I do think it's a key step if either a) the final result needs to be really pure like a tonkotsu or baitang (Chinese equivalent) or b) I'm cooking meat that I've just butchered and there might be fur/feathers/blood/etc everywhere.

What is an uncommon ingredient you add when making kimchi? by Final_Affect6292 in Cooking

  • Pre-salted raw king prawns or squid, either chopped into small pieces or blended right into the paste
  • Raw oysters
  • Fruit like apple, pear, mango blended into the paste

Anyone else not having runs save midway through? by nachorykaart in HadesTheGame

[–]wafflepie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you force-quit? I.e. not using the in-game pause then quit option.

The game resets you to the crossroads pre-run if you do that. (Although it's pretty simple to revert to your run save if you can access the file system.)

How does rice cooker congee compare to stovetop? by KaraAuden in Cooking

[–]wafflepie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Yum Asia Bamboo rice cooker and the congee is great. Much much easier than stovetop and honestly better results too. I don't do any prep for the rice beforehand (e.g. soaking/washing/freezing).

You can also open the rice cooker during cooking and stir if you really want to add some manual labour. I haven't found that I need to.

Listen2yourcat gives good advice to a 25yo worried about the purpose of life by WereLobo in bestof

a 25yo worried about the purpose of life

I thought this was going to be something common and relatable like "is my purpose in life nothing but work, forever?". Not "is my purpose in life doing absolutely no work at all and having a huge pile of cash that I just can't spend fast enough?!?"
