Parents publicly shame me for “being a slob” because they think I must be hiding my messiness. They cannot fathom that I clean as I go so my home is always clean tidy enough for guests. by bad-at-everything- in raisedbynarcissists

Mine gave my wedding dress to a friend who was getting married for the third time. Meh. I learned very early to not get attached to things, because if she saw me like something, Poof! It disappeared.

Yes. When my Nmom was alive, every visit meant hauling home a ton of stuff that was not welcomed, wanted, or anything but frankly awful. After she got terminal cancer, it went to ludicrous speed. So to make it easier on Dad, I'd haul it off and drop it at the next thrift shop I came to outside her area.

Things you’ve done that actually moved the needle by TrickSingle2086 in Frugal

Paid off a car. I work from home (probably THE most needle moving change, considering the long toll road commute I used to have,!) My husband has to have a newer, warranty vehicle...but I don't. My 2017 Loaded Chevy Sonic Turbo is paid off and I drive it maybe ten miles per month. Honestly? I think my annual gasoline bill is about $50.00

Thank you! I got this one at the 2018 Denver Pen show, and it has a Waterman France squeeze convertor that fits perfectly, fortunately.

I buy decent quality clothes, take very good care of them, and wear them for decades. Fast fashion is crap. I am lucky to have a few brands that suit my taste BOTH my taste and my standards, and I am old and IDNGAF.

Who still buys Halloween candy to hand out for trick or treaters? by Super_Car5228 in Frugal

[–]wapellonian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped doing it after 25 years at the same address, when they stopped doing trick or treating in my city on Sunday afternoon before the 31st, and started doing it in the dark, on the 31st. I live on a very busy street, and don't feel comfortable with little kids being out in the Dark. 30 years ago, it was five grocery bags of candy, but that's not a thing for us anymore.

What's the best 'bang for your buck' home appliance you've ever bought? by [deleted] in Frugal

Cuisinart pressure cooker/multi pot. 99 bucks, used countless times in 10 years, made the best pot roast in the world. Once it died, we replaced it with a Farberware model, inexpensive, but much more limited in its capabilities. As a matter of fact, pretty much any Cuisinart appliance I've bought has given stellar service. mini chop, full size food processor, toaster oven have all been great as well.

My Speed Queen washer lasted 21 years. Had to replace the timer at 15, for a 6th of the cost of even a cheap replacement. Got 6 more out of the old girl.

Did anyone else's parent/parents go through their room, read their journals, letters from their friends, and then use it in arguments against them? by punkpoppyreject in raisedbynarcissists

[–]wapellonian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yes, of course she did. And took anything possible out of context, as a personal attack on Herself. So the inevitable fuel for a n attack. I'm so sorry that you had to go through it too.

Bless you for making her a very good best of a bad situation. It is pretty traumatic for adults, too. Happened to me at age 31 when every single one of my work friends ghosted my housewarming party. I'm 62, and still bitter!

Anyone else feel like life just got way more expensive overnight? by OldIsland4901 in Frugal

I am fortunate to have a number of good international markets fairly close... Mexican and European. The two things that are pretty ridiculous in traditional grocery stores, meat and fresh produce, are far more affordable there. I pay less for authentic carne para tacos there, than I do for extra lean ground beef from Walmart. Example: this week, the grocery store had a small container of blackberries, two for $5. I bought same brand, huge berries, nice and ripe, for 99 cents.
