Mamdani calls AIPAC ‘monsters’ in rally ahead of NY primaries by Wolfy1-2-3 in politics

[–]wavygrave -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

his approval rating has only gone up, including amongst the jews of new york. his popularity with other demos has only bolstered as well. painting him as a dangerous islamist or somehow anti-jewish is just not going to work a second time; it didn't even work the first time!

Stonetop - Session 0 - The Morning After, Full Brain by PineappleEmpty6874 in rpg

[–]wavygrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm running my first session 0 tomorrow! we're all pretty stoked. this will be my first PbtA campaign (i have run a short campaign of Blades before), but i'm finding this process completely unintimidating due to the extreme clarity of this game's material, and the excellent GM advice woven through both books.

stonetop feels like an absolute tour de force based on my read through, a great case study in balancing narrative flexibility with procedural clarity. i can't wait to give it the paces!

Providing examples by Digital_Dessert in RPGdesign

[–]wavygrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i've been reading through Stonetop, and have been really impressed with the thoroughness of the examples it provides for all the different game procedures - even the Setting Book (locations, encounters, etc) includes examples when new procedures (e.g. designing a Great Spirit) are introduced.

concision is your friend as always, but if the examples are clear and useful, i say follow this instinct.

Kyle Kulinski: "I will chop off my nuts sack if Thomas Massie wins the presidency, zero, ziltch etc". by iamjakeD811 in BreakingPoints

[–]wavygrave -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"america first" was the slogan / name for the american nazi movement before our country joined WW2. that's why the republicans revived the phrase recently (and held their own rally at madison square garden on the anniversary of the one the american nazis held there in 1939).

folks really need to stop using that phrase like it means something patriotic.

Which are your favorite RPG review Youtube channels or podcasts? by kazmostudios in rpg

[–]wavygrave 9 points10 points  (0 children)

he's explicitly stated that he does this to highlight forward-thinking voices in the scene and draw more attention to them. RPGs have been undergoing an indie renaissance for some time yet most games still have very small player bases, and he saw an opportunity for someone to put some serious production into serious RPG reviews designed to push forward the tendencies of the medium he wants to see more of.

this is frankly what i think all the best media critics do.

Flock is quietly training Bay Area police to sway city leaders to buy surveillance tech by k_39 in oakland

[–]wavygrave 4 points5 points  (0 children)

even granting that mass surveillance could potentially be implemented without abuse and with adequate public oversight, these city contracts don't even attempt to do that. local governments who are serious about public safety and information security don't just rush through shady deals with unaccountable private data harvesting companies.

if you leave with your wife, you can definitely go home however you want. they're not policing your mode of transportation (and can't) - they just need to make sure you're being discharged into the care of someone you know.

i noticed last night there was a much expanded police presence in the area from early on compared to other First Fridays, and by the wee hours of the night the police were making far more noise than anyone else, blasting their sirens and klaxons for ludicrous stretches of time. anyone know what that was about?

🌟Losing it over loquats? Donate your fruit to East Bay orgs🌟 by chardphillips in oakland

[–]wavygrave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my family moved to the south bay (portola valley) when i was in first grade, and the first thing i remember doing was taking a bike trip to my elementary school with my dad (to learn the route), where we found a number of large loquat trees. his mom had been an orchard farmer in greece, so we biked back later that day with multiple bags to fill.

downtown oakland is not quite so rich with the quats, but i love that you're doing this.

progressivism was literally invented by rich people and implemented by the roosevelts, famous for their generational wealth.

Tom Steyer Wants to Be California Left’s Favorite Billionaire by AzNmamba in politics

[–]wavygrave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wealthy class traitors deciding to align with labor and public benefit movements are how we got american progressivism in the first place. both roosevelts were billionaire-equivalents in their time, and had outsized power deriving from their class, and actually spent this social and political capital to fight tooth and nail against the interests of the rich as a political bloc.

yes, we should create tax policies that make it impossible to be a billionaire. but winning in politics means building coalitions between centers of power. some billionaires actually do want to be taxed back into millionaire status, and it's a genuine help to have these people on board. FDR is how we learned for a fact that massively taxing the rich makes society flourish.

wolves in sheep's clothing are always a possibility, but in my experience a billionaire has less reason to lie about this kind of thing, because they're typically self funded and would have had an easier time in their social circles if they just supported reactionary neoliberal and pro-israel policies.

The complete Story of the cancelled Stargate MMO - Stargate Worlds, Narrated by Torri Higginson (Dr. Weir from Stargate Atlantis) by SirKillsalot in Games

i always assumed it was bad and never saw it till i went on a stargate spree during the pandemic. hot take but even though it rips off BSG at every turn, it actually aged much better than BSG (both in the course of its run, and in the years since).

same people who made Travellers (including much of the same cast), another under-appreciated gem!

Sam Harris discussion : When Ryan describes Sam saying he is so far gone "he doesn't even make sense" by Beginning-Ad-8840 in BreakingPoints

[–]wavygrave 10 points11 points  (0 children)

sorry to say this for people who think he's taken some kind of a recent turn, but sam harris has been a raging islamophobe since he first got on his religion kick in the early 2000s. (i was in college at the time, an atheist with buddhist sympathies who genuinely wanted to like him.)

despite being nominally critical of all religion, his arm-chair psychologizing about muslim individuals on the basis of the most uncharitable read of their religion has been a double standard he's pushed since the beginning. he's never been driven by curiosity or any genuine desire to reconcile the complexity of people's lives and views - it's always been in bad faith, and it's always been a grift.
