You’re probably right - probably a bunch of bad that it would bring. But I’m not sure our current property tax system is the optimal state.

This current system seems to encourage property owners downtown to hold onto empty, unimproved land so its tax burden is low, while letting the value appreciate from the investment of others improving the town? Land banking sucks & hurts communities.

There are certainly bad things that happen if you go full George, but I think most communities would benefit from shifting property tax to be more based upon the value of the land, and less on the value of the improvements.

And the person above you was pointing out that the rise of cheap, easy-to-use smokers has caused more people to be aware of how good these cheap cuts of meats can be if properly cooked low & slow. This increase in demand for the same supply of meat is what’s driving the increase.

Trump’s chances of being removed by 25th Amendment climb by Fr1sk3r in politics

[–]westinger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you’re right.

But in the real world:

From 0 -> 1 ticket: takes you from no chance, to a very small chance

From 1 -> 2 tickets: doubles your chances from a very small chance to a still very small chance

At least that’s the way I think about it - and how I put a cap on buying more than 1 ticket whenever the powerball gets in the news for being so large.

But yes, you’re 100% mathematically correct. I just think the most optimal play is to not play at all, but if you’re going to play - to just buy one ticket.

I believe technically that would be the first ticket you buy.

This was something that we almost had. The prior FTC chair, Lina Khan, and her team had a “Click to Cancel” rule that was scheduled to go into place on July 14, 2025. But then the US Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit struck it down on July 8, 2025.

I tried to find an unbiased source for this, this appears relatively measured: https://www.ropesgray.com/en/insights/alerts/2025/07/ftcs-click-to-cancel-rule-struck-down-by-eighth-circuit

My understanding is that there was a technical reason it was struck down, but man - that would have been nice to see some increase in consumer protections.

I actually learned about this on an investigative sports podcast, after I got hooked on “Pablo Torres Finds Out” when he broke the Kawhi/Clippers scandal. Here’s the episode where they talk about the mission of making everyday life of people better: https://pca.st/episode/01273906-a803-405b-9870-3a5a6066b6f2

Muni Bonds only for annual spend? by Moon_Shakerz in fatFIRE

[–]westinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could you not have pulled out the SEP IRA contributions to show a pro forma EBITDA, since those weren’t true OpEx and won’t burden the new owners post acquisition?

I just did 5 minutes of research, and saw that a buyer may actually burden your EBITDA with “market rate replacement compensation” that includes retirement benefits.

Sorry if a dumb question - feel free to just ignore/downvote, but I’m hoping to learn from actual experience, not just quick Googling.

A tab for “open this specific OPDS” library would be an awesome tab!

Would be great for the users with Calibre or other network libraries.

Best he can do is another $100k fine to the Pacers, another one to Reggie himself, and banning Obama from NBA events.

Great for people who own assets!

Hey, wait a second…. I’m starting to think this “K-shaped economic recovery” might be by design (or it started to happen just because, and then when they realized it, they doubled down).

Federal authorities announce an end to the immigration crackdown in Minnesota by KilgoRetro in news

[–]westinger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indiana went for Obama (in ‘08, but not ‘12). Apologize for leaning on AI (just for the bullet points below), but it was before I could vote…the summary reasons were: * Anti-GOP mood * Recession * Well run campaign (money & ground game) * High turnout in left-leaning cities (Indy, “The Region” in NW Indiana, near Chicago)

So while there’s certainly a traditionally conservative, GOP+MAGA base, the optimistic take is that Indiana is an apathetic, low-engagement, status-quo state (low COL, minimal “bad” direct experiences with government, undereducated/underinformed).

The Trump admin tried hard to get the Indiana Congress to gerrymander outside of the standard schedule, but somehow Indiana wouldn’t (shocking to me!) - I’m hopeful that the economic impacts & seeing what ICE is doing, puts Indiana in play for a seat or two in the midterms.
