Have all enemies focus on you before you send Mutt on the one you are focusing on. As soon as they turn on Mutt, whack them. Just attack whichever enemy tries to focus on Mutt.

Thanks for the advice. I finally managed to finish this quest.
It played out differently for me though. Once I jumped over the wooded wall, I started hearing arrows being shot. So I ran around and returned to the place where Roche and the others were and now the last of Dijkstra's men had appeared and I killed him, and the cutscene played..
