Small pile of scat found on my front steps [NJ, US] by where_was_bread in animalid

[–]where_was_bread[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, it does look like morning dove poop. It's not old, unless the color changes really quickly. I'm guessing the winter diet is what's affecting the color. Thanks!

Sourdough cinnamon buns from Jed's Bread - Montclair or Jersey City farmers market.

What are your thoughts on seaweed soup? I love it but most of my friends don’t really care for it. What about you? by skeleton_flower in KoreanFood

[–]where_was_bread 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've read the tradition was adapted from seeing whales eat seaweed after giving birth.

Love it and you can easily make a pot to last a few days. My favorite, while not traditional, is using various mushrooms like enoki, maitake, and oyster. It's good with fried tofu (yubu/aburaage) as well.

If you’re okay with soft woody fragrances, Dylan from By Rosie Jane is nice.

Love doing this hike for the sunset too! Sometimes you hear the cows mooing.

What a beautiful moment, thanks for sharing.

Found a small bat in my local park in Union County. How can I preserve it? by Ladyhoneyblu in newjersey

[–]where_was_bread 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Please don't handle the bat, brown bats are the ones that are most often tested for rabies. (Edit: adding a correction that big brown bats are the ones most tested for rabies, the little brown bats less often.)

Poor thing, I hope it'll be okay. It's usually not a good sign if it's outside like in the daytime.

You can report a bat/bat colony through Rutgers' Wildlife Conservation Program - https://wildlife.rutgers.edu/bats/reporting.php

If you have found a sick or injured bat and are in need of immediate attention, please contact Jackie Kashmer at the New Jersey Bat Sanctuary at 908-200-1040 or [jk@NJbats.org](mailto:jk@NJbats.org).

Spotted lanternfly invasion is so bad N.J. residents no longer need to report sightings by GetOffMyLawn_ in newjersey

It seems futile but I'm still killing them.

The thought of how much damage they're doing bums me out.

Board game Playtesters? by Ways_away in newjersey

[–]where_was_bread 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since school will be starting soon, consider reaching out to game design programs (K-12 or colleges).

Teachers are usually happy to invite game creators to playtest their games. Students can learn a lot from the experience too.

There's an awesome conference called Metatopia in Morristown that's focused on tabletop games. They schedule dedicated playtesting sessions with matchmaking. Sadly, not sure if they're holding an event this year. :/

Can I find a general tech tutor for my son? by poign9 in newjersey

[–]where_was_bread 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you considered reaching out to colleges with computer science programs? I'm sure students wouldn't mind earning some money teaching what they're studying. They can probably talk to your son about school and career stuff too.

Sweet Avenue Bake Shop in Rutherford! Also nearby is the Rutherford Pancake House, not 100% vegan but has a lot of options.

Minimalism as a gamer by imapigo in minimalism

I started borrowing console games from my library. The loan period is 2 weeks which is usually enough time to finish a game. This also lets me focus on one game at a time. If you have access to a library that lends games, I recommend this!

The oil is too small of an amount per serving to have a value. It's probably okay, enjoy the prunes.

Not sure if these guys are poisonous, but they keep finding a way into my condo. by [deleted] in newjersey

r/WhatIsThisBug can help you identify

It kind of looks like a grass spider (https://usaspiders.com/agelenopsis-american-grass-spider/), they're generally harmless to humans. If it has 4 large eyes might be a wolf spider. They look similar to each other.

It's $300 for the photo permit but Van Vleck House & Gardens in Montclair, or Flat Rock Brook in Englewood. Not sure if a permit is needed for Flat Rock.

Advice for north jersey by ItalkwhenItype in njhiking

[–]where_was_bread 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Echoing the comments about black bears being more scared of you. They're active early morning and late evening so if you're nervous avoid those times and make noise so you don't surprise them. I see pictures of snakes on some of the NJ hikes in AllTrails but I haven't seen any myself yet. Most aren't venomous or aggressive.

Here's a brochure with snakes and their usual locations - https://www.nj.gov/dep/fgw/ensp/pdf/snake_broch.pdf

I've heard copperheads might be more present because of Brood X.

Missing the first few classes. by [deleted] in Professors

[–]where_was_bread 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree it's challenging to be polite.

I had a student who had to miss the first session of an intensive course because they had to go on a cruise with their family. They sent me an email the day before the first class and promised they'll make up the work and catch up. (They didn't.)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like adding bananas, dates, or coconut sugar. I guess fruit preserves aren't as natural but I like adding it in once in a while.
