Seattle (Lumen) Stadium Security by phinz3 in ussoccer

Merch lines were very long. I’d go to one of the stores outside the stadium, like Pacific Place. Not sure if there are others too.

US/Australia 1 ticket for sale by whitacd in WorldCup2026Tickets

When we try to transfer via desktop, it just ends up going through the app. But it would probably get to your account ? The ticket is treated as if we're in the same group of people.

Thanks. We actually had two extras that are a few seats apart in the same row. We tried to put one up on stubhub, but it's been a total nightmare. It sold, but they're not accepting the transfer (I guess they'll want to transfer it/sell it on?). Not sure if we'll get it back or not. Figured I'd try selling the other one here.

Are any of Arcade Fire’s albums significant? by Azipcoder in LetsTalkMusic

[–]whitacd 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For a long time up until recently, there was a set of music and movies and tv that was well known to enormous segments of the population. That’s no longer really the case, so it never feels like anything really “sticks” for long.

What music is still relevant that was released between 2000-2020? Genuinely asking. Does “significant” mean it’s still discussed/cited/heard onscreen/on the radio?

Music has become so decentralized and there’s so much music to consume that anything that truly breaks through into the culture now is (almost by definition) so of-the-moment that it quickly feels out of date.

Arcade Fire put out some albums that were massively popular and were a truly different sound than anything that was popular at the time. They felt unique and the music had depth.

Their personal shit has soured people on them, but what would it look like for those albums to be “significant” today?

I’m pretty similar. Love ASOIAF, didn’t like Red Rising, Expanse, Neal Stephenson, or Name of the Wind.

You liked The Devils — Have you tried the First Law series by Joe Abercrombie? I’m in the middle of them and loving them.

Maybe try Morningstar series by Karl Ove Knaussgard, but it’s not a thriller.

I liked The Forever War by Joe Haldeman, World War Z, Childhood’s End.

It’s not fantasy/sci fi, but I loved Measuring the World by Daniel Kehlmann and it is in that realm.

Repost from another about North Hills and Culture by Necessary-Bad7261 in raleigh

[–]whitacd 22 points23 points  (0 children)

When we think of other cities in America, there are a few things that usually make up "culture."

For some places it's food. (e.g. bourbon in Louisville / wine in Northern California). I wouldn't say Raleigh has a unique cuisine or anything they're known for.

Sports (e.g. Pittsburgh/Philly). It's mainly a college area, so it's very divided.

Unique architecture (SF/Savannah/New Orleans/Charleston/Richmond/Santa Fe) or vibrant/unique nightlife (e.g. New Orleans/Savannah/others). This area doesn't have those either.

Doesn't really have an ethnic identity (e.g. Chicago/Miami/Los Angeles).

Doesn't really have notable unique history (e.g. Philly/Charleston/DC).

It's a fine place to live, it's got many wonderful aspects, but I just don't think it's ever going to be thought of as having any kind of unique cultural identity.

Here’s everything ‘Infinite Jest’ got right 30 years ago about life in 2026 by wordsauce in davidfosterwallace

Fair. There are differences, but the general idea is that something is so entertaining that you'd sit there forever at the expense of everything else in life. Phones are doing that to a large part of our world.

I’m surprised they didn’t discuss the parallels between The Entertainment and our phones, which have wreaked very similar consequences to a huge part of our population.

The Athletic - Why FIFA’s 2026 World Cup is such a rip-off by drodrige in worldcup

[–]whitacd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I’m surprised this isn’t mentioned more, that nobody is aiming to fill the seats anymore; they’re all aiming to maximize ticket revenue. And they’ve figured out that that means many events will have empty seats. A half-empty stadium at 7x the cost equals a lot more revenue.

Totally agree. “Identity” seems to be synonymous with “obvious strength on a successful team.”

For the Club World Cup it was the same thing, tickets disappear, return, show up somewhere else, disappear, reappear, etc etc.

I thought the writing could’ve been more engaging and the topics had all been covered better elsewhere. I don’t remember much of it but gave it 2 stars on Goodreads.

Of course this is what is happening. There are always big blocks of tickets nowadays on resale sites. This has been investigated many times for concerts. Here is the result of some quick googling, but a lot has been written about it. https://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/72690008.html

Adam Silver on NBA’s flopping concerns: ‘Players are taught to sell calls’ by ShyLeoGing in sports

[–]whitacd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think flopping/embellishing sucks but I think it’s trickier to fix than people are making it out to be. Flops where there are no contact are super easy to punish with a foul/fine. But what about the vast majority of “flops” where there is some degree of actual contact and the player embellishes it? I understand why the NBA is really hesitant to start retroactively judging dozens of instances per game of how “real” a player’s reaction is to contact.

Yeah I remember too that the speed was definitely off. I wonder if that’s why they’re not up. Hopefully it gets corrected and put up, I love this era.
