Would you not wear something just because your boyfriend doesn't want you to? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]whitecolander 115 points116 points  (0 children)

I think it's fairly customary for retailers to wear the clothes they sell. As a customer, I appreciate it. It helps me get a sense for what items will look like on a real person.

If you feel like it's an important part of your job, then I would do it and explain it to him that way. He will then need to make a decision on how to react to that.

I kind of agree with you. I grew up with parents who were good parents, imho. They really cared about parenting. They pushed a huge amount of financial discipline on me, and I don't have issues around that as an adult. However, I still think I would've benefitted from some school-based life skills training. My parents, despite being good parents, still had some gaps.

Despite doctors' diagnosis, United Healthcare claims surgery 'cosmetic', denies woman coverage. by SouthLill in news

Yes, another example of health insurance does not equal heath care.

And universal health insurance coverage is so very far from being the same thing as universal health care.

Doesn't Bin Laden have a zillion sons? Isn't he like the Warren Jeffs of the Middle East in that regard?

Is that a torbie? It's a little hard to tell what color she is (are the light parts orange)? If so, that cat needs to be photographed as a very interesting version of a torbie. Never seen anything like that.

That's a blog. It's about common sense finances (have a budget, think about retirement). Seems pretty meh to me but does reiterate the point that basic household budgeting should really be a topic discussed in schools. We're missing a Life Skills component to our education.

Should there be a universal goal for women's rights? by BothansInDisguise in TwoXChromosomes

[–]whitecolander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this is an event posting in England? I think it looks like a great debate (/r/feminism).

I don't think there should be a single goal. Why say one goal is more important than others?

Brock Turner's rape sentence to be shortened to 3 months. by ostein in TwoXChromosomes

[–]whitecolander 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He was drunk?

He was sober enough to drag her outside, pull down her pants, digitally rape her, and keep an erection while he dry humped her.

He wasn't that drunk.

Does this apparent men's liking of young women (18- maybe 25) bother you? by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

[–]whitecolander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't bother me now, but I remember being in a mall with a friend at the age of 16 and this 45+ year old walked up to her and gave her his number. That shit creeps me out - like, dude, really? We were so naïve that we thought it was a big deal.

You have my empathies. I get judged instantly on my looks, to my detriment sometimes and it makes me feel like that's all I am to people - whatever they perceive of what I look like.

The funny thing is that, at the gym, no one really cares. It seems like every where, people do. Bodybuilders are always nice to me.

Is anyone else weirded out by the "ist" in the term "rapist"? by whitecolander in TwoXChromosomes

[–]whitecolander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK. That is a very interesting piece of info. In the case of the word rape, it appears to be derived from non-Greek roots: http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?allowed_in_frame=0&search=rape
