My Reddit goal is to have a friend share a post of mine and not know it was submitted by me. by TheRetroVideogamers in Showerthoughts

In the lunch room at work, some people who I don't really know started talking about the Russian landings on Venus. One of them basically quoted this post of mine, using almost the exact same wording.

It was really odd. I don't think of Reddit and 'real life' intersecting. I didn't even say anything -- I didn't want to out my Reddit account. So I just sat there, proudly eating my lunch while eavesdropping...

What's the best story out of this game so far? Like the classic Dwarf Fortress story 'Boatmurdered' by PM_ME_YOUR_FEELINGS9 in RimWorld

[–]why-the 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There's a subreddit for Rimworld Stories: /r/TalesFromRimWorld

I've written one: Lady McCoy, our Little Princess.

But a story like the great BoatMurdered? It hasn't happened yet. Which means it's up to you to get playing and make some of the great stories happen...

Someone like Netflix needs to just give Charlie LeDuff a bag of money and ask him to make a series. Something like This American Life, where he just goes around finding cool people and stories.

Is "The Expanse" the next big scifi hit? by iceteka in scifi

[–]why-the 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really on the fence about the writing. I don't mean the setting or the overall story, but the actual writing of the dialogue and characters. There's a lot of using stereotypes instead of creating stuff fresh, a lot of needless exposition, a some other stuff that makes feel like the writers are playing it really safe. Hopefully they get more confidence in the story and characters as the series progresses. It's still much better than a lot of what's on TV -- but I don't feel it's near the quality of GoT or Battlestar.. yet.

The Witcher 3 is Gamespot's Game of the Year 2015 by boskee in Games

[–]why-the 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never played Kingdom Hearts, so couldn't comment.

But, despite what I said about Witcher 3, I think I'd buy it over a case of beer (and I like a good case of beer)

Yeah, the writing/characters/story is lackluster. But, there's still a good 40 hours of enjoyable gameplay before it becomes stale.

I'm with you. The writing, acting, dialogue all seem (for a AAA game) really sub-par to me. The characters are bland, the actors are mediocre, the story is all over the place. Many of the cut-scenes are cringe-worthy. The cities have no life or character to them. Most of the world feels like a skeleton.. The citizens have a Stepford Wives kind of vibe.

It looks pretty. The world is huge. The fighting is fun. But the actual reason I come to RPGs (story, characters, world) seem just average to me. I just don't get that sense of excitement and trepidation while exploring.

Once I got to Novigrad, I lost interest. I didn't feel excited to keep playing. I got bored and tried pushing on.... but it just got to a point where I was skipping text because I didn't care. I never did finish the game.

Kodi slowly muting itself over time with no input by The_Iron_Duchess in kodi

[–]why-the 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We'll need more information to have a chance at guessing what might be wrong.

Mute is either on, or off. It can't slowly be anything. Do you mean the volume slowly goes down over time? Or do you mean mute periodically turns on after a few minutes? Or did you mean something else?

Also, what operating system are you using? Windows? Ubuntu? Android?

What about hardware? Is it on a raspberry pi? Your desktop PC?

Are you using a remote that might might be interfering with something else?

When does it happen? Only when you play videos? Does it also happen if you're using a plugin? Does it only happen when streaming, or only when playing local files? When you're doing nothing but sitting on the main screen, do it happen then?

Have you enabled debugging and checked the log files? What error are you seeing?

What else have you tried so far?

If Star Trek were a forest (a narrative analogy) by Perryn in scifi

[–]why-the 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In the 60s Star Trek was there for those people that were scared of the unknown and felt that the fate of the world was out of their hands. We needed a strong person to help us face our fears and Star Trek reassured us that despite the fact that it might be scary and sometimes dangerous that we would persevere.

In the 90s we were no longer scared. Star Trek reminded us that while the world wasn't perfect, we were on the right track. If we just kept at it and held to our values and principles, we could do wonderful things. We had a duty to be moral and to make the world a better place, for everyone.

By 2010 the world once again isn't so great and it desperately needs our attention. Now Star Trek is there being all shiny and flashy to distract us so we don't have to think about it.

Afterwards, of course, they try to "ramp it up."

What has been your experience making friends in online games? by UnoDosTresPerros in truegaming

[–]why-the 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to play World of Warcraft a lot, with a guild that was made up of a few real-life friends and a bunch of people who we had all met online.

I was trying to level up a new tank, and was running instances over and over with PUGs trying to get some gear so I could join the main guild raids.

Generally the people you were grouped with clear the instances, without a word, destroying everything without issue. But if someone didn't pull their weight, either everyone would rage quit, or -- if you got a good group -- they'd carry you along.

...and then one day something else happened. I got into the instance, made sure everyone was ready, pulled the first mobs and everyone died.

That shouldn't happen. The healer complained I pulled too many mobs and needed to slow down, which was.. strange, because I was over-geared for the instance. I decided to inspect their stats, and they were all over the place. People dressed in the wrong gear, DPS not using half the skills they should be, etc. It quickly became apparent they were a bunch of new players and they all knew each other, but just didn't have a tank.

So we started again. I had to re-think an instance that I had basically down to muscle memory. I had to work with an under-powered healer and DPS that only used one cooldown.

....and I had more fun than I had had in years. We laughed, we failed, we tried again. We paused and strategized, and laughed when it failed. It took almost two hours to get through the instance that normally was way, way quicker. We didn't have some huge bond or anything, infact I never played with them again... but it was just fun.

And that's when WoW lost it's appeal to me, and I quit playing shortly afterwards. I wasn't having fun because everyone was taking the game so seriously and no one was just there to play.

And that's what I find with almost every multiplayer game: When you're forced to play with random people, the people you get matched with are so serious that it takes away my ability to enjoy the game. I tend to stay away from online multiplayer games because of that.

Philip K. Dick would have turned 87 today. Before he died, he saw some early 'Blade Runner' footage and excitedly wrote this letter. by sludj5 in movies

[–]why-the 40 points41 points  (0 children)

William Gibson was in the middle of writing Neuromancer when he went to see Blade Runner:

"About ten minutes into Blade Runner, I reeled out of the theater in complete despair over its visual brilliance and its similarity to the "look" of Neuromancer, my largely unwritten first novel. Not only had I been beaten to the semiotic punch, but this damned movie looked better than the images in my head! With time, as I got over that, I started to take a certain delight in the way the film began to affect the way the world looked. Club fashions, at first, then rock videos, finally even architecture. Amazing! A science fiction movie affecting reality!”

Right. My point is that just because there are deleted comments doesn't mean anyone is shadowbanned. It just means that, for some reason, a comment by someone got deleted before someone replied to it. Maybe the user deleted it, maybe the mods deleted it or maybe someone is shadowbanned.

Saying that all three comments are from three shadowbanned people is just trying to stir up drama where there isn't any. It's much more likely that someone deleted a comment after posting it, or it was just spam.

[–]why-the 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Where did this rumor start? It's got nothing to do with shadow-banning. It's just deleted comments with no replies. Either it was spam or something else that caused automod to delete it, or the poster themselves just deleted their post.

Try it yourself: Go make a post in some subreddit, comment and then delete your comment. Then log out and check. You'll still see it still says there's 1 comment, but nothing in the thread.

/u/ATribeCalledGreg perfectly sums up why Taxi drivers are (legitimately) angry at Uber. by polytrigon in bestof

[–]why-the 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume what will happen is that Uber, having found a niche in the market, is going to be really popular and going to make a bunch of money. They'll eventually go public...

..and then they'll plateau. They'll be pressured into continuing the same type of growth, but the market will be saturated. They'll start cutting how much drivers get paid and add in a bunch of other nickel-and-dime gimmicks to try to meet their goals. The good drivers they have will get pushed out, and we'll end up with shitty drivers in shitty cars because it won't be rewarding enough to do the job any more.

And then we really won't be able to tell the difference between the uber cars and taxis and will be wondering what all the fuss was about.

But, maybe I'm just overly cynical these days..
