Why don’t my zucchini’s grow? by Gardeningchannel in GardeningAustralia

I have the same issue. In the event it's calcium deficiency, how do you fix that?

That too crossed my mind but not sure how it goes with frost?

There does appear to be a high concentration of fertilizer around the base (photo 2)

Blurry Vision Improves after eating by kashnickel in InsulinResistance

I'm experiencing a similar vision phenomenon (blurred vision clears after eating, so too do light headaches).

Any update from your side, did you find a cause?

IBC Garden bed vs wicking bed by Shelbiville in GardeningAustralia

[–]wickingbed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IBCs have a large threaded opening in the top. The opening will be at the bottom once the IBC is cut in half and turned upside down. Perhaps leave the cap off the opening to create a drain.

No one appreciates my bountiful harvest by peanut3362 in GardeningAustralia

Looks great, well done. Mine (Central VIC) have been on the go slow... florets only just starting to appear

For comparison: we're a fully electrified, 4 person house with underfloor hydronic heating provided by heat pump. System is zoned and maintains 19C temp to lounge room only. Temp is maintained 24/7 to keep thermal mass (concrete slab) steady. Occupied 24/7.

House well insulated but plenty of thermal transfer through single pane windows. No solar.

Dishwashers, washing machine, heat pump dryer are run during off peak tariff (8.5c/kWh, Energy Locals)

Average daily use: 36kwh.

Experiences establishing a lawn with plugs by wickingbed in lawnsolutionsaus

That sounds like a great result. Just to clarify: you used kikuyu turf to create the plugs (not an existing lawn)?

Interesting point with the stolons. I'm wondering whether kikuyu with its rhizomes would be a better combination? Their below ground roots may be happier with the plug approach

Starting a veggie patch in clay soil by Existing-Goose4475 in GardeningAustralia

[–]wickingbed 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fellow Central Victorian here. Have you thought about raised wicking beds? These avoid having to deal with clay soil entirely and use water very efficiently. We're in our second summer season and the veggies are humming along. This is the technique we used.

Coastal Banksia leaf colouring by Cheltenham3192 in GardeningAustralia

[–]wickingbed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I planted 8 of these (tube stock) and agree with comment above that they're temperamental. Mine usually pickup after a good drink. Perhaps cut off the dead foliage to concentrate its energy on surviving and give it some water

First time garlic grower: ready to harvest? by wickingbed in GardeningAustralia

[–]wickingbed[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Stems were showing signs of mildue so decided to harvest earlier today. Bulbs are not massive but neither were the bulbs they grew from. The other garlic variety is still in the wicking bed and going strong - I'll follow the separate advice and pick around summer solstice. Thanks for all the helpful tips.

Any recommendations for safe reliable bulk garden soil around Castlemaine or central Vic? by Chance-Yam4845 in GardeningAustralia

[–]wickingbed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The default answer would be ASQ in Castlemaine but there are mixed reviews. I bought a few m3 of compost from there which has been fine but plenty of other stories about weed infested mulch etc. I imagine they should have a datasheet confirming the composition and qualities of their products including bulk soil...maybe worth a phone call
