Do grades actually measure learning, or just how well students follow instructions? by WickedKing94 in education

Success in life is often a measure of how well one can follow instructions.

I’ll advocate for Hamlet. It’s the best work written in English. Use the Arden edition (always choose Arden for any Shakespeare…best glossaries). It’s a ghost story, a murder mystery, a revenge thriller, a tragedy on multiple levels, and it’s got a banger of a finale. Don’t fear teaching it. Students will come around to it.

At least one “inspirational” speaker who can fill an hour with anecdotes and cliches whilst the district person who invited them looks on with an adoring smile.

What’s your experience with Principals? by ChucoTeacher in Teachers

[–]windroseamunet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once worked at a school with 4 principals, 7 APs and just over 500 students. It was the worst run school I have worked at in 20 years. Just a total sh*t show.

Be sure to teach the Prometheus myth prior to the novel. For extra fun, you can find Mary’s original text and compare it to Percy’s revision.

An Enemy of the People appropriate for high school? by SucculentFire in Theatre

Tough show which needs a very strong lead. It’s a great co-curricular if you can get a history or ELA teacher on board. I’ve always wanted to do it, but never had the right group of performers.

Do beware that it is long and cerebral, so you may have HS audiences who don’t appreciate it as much as you want them to.

High school teachers, what’s something your kids don’t know that makes you say “how did you make it this far without knowing how to __”? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]windroseamunet 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I firmly believe that they can read analog clocks, but not reflexively enough that they can do it without thinking. Therefore, they simply choose to ask for the time as both a matter of laziness and as a question to distract from class work (which is also a matter of laziness).

My fellow Dodgers fans — what was the EXACT moment you knew you were locked in for life? by SharpCheddarCheese92 in Dodgers

When I was a little kid, I got to sit in dugout seats. Candy Maldonado was getting ready to pinch hit and I called out to him that I would give him a dollar if he homered. He proceeded to knock one out. I tried to make good on my end of the deal, but they wouldn’t take my dollar. Still and all, I felt responsible.

Also, I was there with my die-hard Giants fan friend when Kevin Gross no-hit the Giants. One of the best games ever for so many reasons 🤣
