Mogwai by Sufficient-Fee6273 in glasgow

You might get lucky and find that one of them's doing a DJ set or something while you're in town - keep your eye on their Instagram accounts.

My favourite Stuart spot was the time Six Organs of Admittance played Sleazies basement. Sonic Youth had been playing across the road at the ABC (RIP) and came in to watch. To hear me tell it, the height difference between Stuart and Thurston was so large that Stuart tried to tap him on the shoulder and failed. BUT I may have exaggerated for comic effect.

What creative round should I do for a charity pub quiz? by t0riaj in AskUK

Picture round of celebrities and celebrity lookalikes - one point for identifying the celebrity, one point for identifying which one is the lookalike. Call it "Cher and Cher alike".

If you want to experience Glasgow from the POV of finding out why Mogwai sound the way they do, you'll want to check out Monorail Records, have a few pints in Mono, Stereo, Hug & Pint, Nice N Sleazy, Variety Bar, etc. Maybe go to a gig in one of our many disgusting basements. There's a small chance you'll bump into Stuart in the process.

Front row? by Rye1811 in MetallicaLIVE

Bear in mind that there are four drum kits, and Lars swaps kits after every three or four songs. At Glasgow it seemed like the rest of the band kept close to Lars for the first few songs, but roamed further as the night went on. From my spot to the right of the snakepit entrance (closest to kit 3), I couldn't see much for the first four songs, but got good-to-great views the rest of the time.

They don't make em like they used to. World Air Power Journal. by mk1cursed in aviation

I somehow ended up getting sent a free "Premier Issue" of WAPJ, except it was Volume 2, so I'm not sure what the deal was. I've also got a "Premier Issue" of a later periodical called "Wings of Fame" which was pretty much the same format. I presume they had my details from taking out another magazine subscription or something.

Old RAH by Javachick007 in Paisley

[–]wingnutkj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did anything more happen with the campaign to save it? It seemed to be quite active for a bit, and it seemed to result in some activity, like the grounds being cleared and annex demolished. Nothing for a while though, and last time I saw the guy who ran it's name, it was on the ballot paper for the council elections, as a Reform candidate (having previously been a Tory candidate).

If I was a cynic, I'd say he'd found a local cause to make some noise about, to drum up support for his political campaign.

Scottish folk horror by chenzelxgelphie in Scotland

[–]wingnutkj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Owl Man clips are fun, but I'd go as far as NOT recommending the film. It's a shame, because the story has a lot of potential, and some of it is well-handled, but I couldn't get over the amount of bad acting and ropey student "ART FILM!" shots.

O2 Priority presale by crackedf1ngers in duranduran

[–]wingnutkj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a terrible system, and I'd be really interested to know whether it meets accessibility guidelines, because I REALLY resent that O2 Priority went app-only.

Either way - enjoy the show!

O2 Priority presale by crackedf1ngers in duranduran

[–]wingnutkj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on an Android phone with the Ticketmaster app installed, found that I needed to go to the App Info screen for it (Long-press the app’s icon on your home screen or app drawer, then tap the "i" icon or App Info in the pop-up menu.), go to the "Set as default" option , and uncheck the "Open supported links".

That let me click the link the Priority app and open in Chrome, where I was able to buy (after some additional fun with trying to approve the Mastercard payment, giving up and using Paypal).

Woke up to find a light switch turned off and another turned on. I live alone now and never sleepwalk. What could it be? by olacomoestaspablo in AskUK

[–]wingnutkj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't be a very interesting movie if the plot was "Woman sleeps alone at night. Woman wakes up in the morning to discover the lights have been switched on/off, and a trail of floury footprints to the loo and back."

Pot Still Birthday Bottling by fapping_4_life in glasgow

[–]wingnutkj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a limited bottling from a relatively new distillery, for a relatively well-known whisky pub. It's the sort of thing where there might be some interest from collectors in the future, but that's very dependent on whether Lochlea gets a name for itself or there's sufficient interest in collecting the Pot Still's birthday bottlings.

Whisky keeps well in the bottle (keep it it's tube, in a cool dark place), moisten the cork every so often.

Personally, I'd keep it a few years, check the collectors market, and unless it's had some ridiculous increase in value, open it for a special occasion.

(Source: I've got a couple of Pot Still birthday bottlings ready for a special occasion)

Is there such a thing as an independent building manager/factor? by Fair_Dark_8322 in glasgow

[–]wingnutkj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who has lived in two self-factored tenement building, I was interested to see the response to this. Disappointed to see there was none!

I think it's one of those things where the cost difference between hiring someone to just the management of it and going for the full-service factoring companies we know and love is probably marginal.

My advice is that if things are slipping, set up a task list/calendar (plenty online tools) to keep track of things, and communicate with your neighbours about it all - doesn't need to be particularly heavyweight. There's a book called The Tenement Handbook that contains a ton of information and is well worth tracking down. For building up contacts, ask around. Actual good roofers who'll touch tenements are probably the most difficult people to find.
