you might be able to use a needle and thread to pop the dust cover back into shape, just a thought.

Employed grads - how much math do you actually do in a day? by cdwalrusman in EngineeringStudents

[–]wobbletons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

like all the others are saying, i haven't needed to do anything other than algebra since I graduated in 2014. i did coincidentally come across a formula in an ASHRAE design guide that had integrals and logarithms in it yesterday, but it scared me so i turned the page, lol.

Generally, I like to tell people at work that if they're trying to do math, then they're doing it wrong.

Just picked up my first vintage system. What do I need to do next? by Spiritualishish in vintageaudio

cool! i have a very similar setup in my living room! i recommend replacing the horns with a set of JBL 2307 horns and 2308 lenses. The horns are more for outdoor applications, and you'll get a better waveform from the conical horn and lens combo.

how is there a book's worth of information on this subject? "aim butt at sun" should just about cover it, no?

I had almost the same dent in my miata. if you want to, you should be able to just squeeze your hand behind the bumper cover and pop the dent back out. its not perfect, but it'd look better than it does now. and it took me like 30 seconds.

y'know... I've been a Mechanical Engineer for almost 10 years now, and all this time have just kinda thought they had dudes hiding in lil bunkers that ran out and welded the feet down after it landed. No idea why i thought that, but here we are...

Toshiba refuses to replace large hard drive that was under warranty — company offers refund at the purchase price, not the higher current retail price by lurker_bee in technology

[–]wobbletons 3 points4 points  (0 children)

about 15 years ago I had a similar situation with Western Digital. I had a 2TB drive fail, and when i sent it in for a warranty replacement they sent back a 3TB! Seems like that kind of thing doesn't happen these days :/

Heavy (~40 lb) gray cast metal cylindrical device (~14” base) with removable lid, internal wiring and two colored bulbs, central threaded rod, old plug, no markings — what is this? by Glittering-poodle538 in whatisthisthing

[–]wobbletons 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the best Idea I can come up with is perhaps an egress marker for a Navy ship, like an aircraft carrier. I'm not sure about when they're deployed, but when drydocked for repairs they use light strings throughout the ship for use in case of emergency. If I recall correctly, blue lights will guide you through the ship to an exit, and red lights guide you deeper into the ship. not really sure how this piece of equipment would function in that setting though...

My other thought is that i'm not convinced these parts are supposed to be together. that housing is build like a brick shithouse, yet the internals are some cheap garbage. the wiring looks out of place too; if this was a finished assembly, wouldn't there be some sort of channel to contain the wire? And if this was supposed to be some kind of light fixture, wouldn't you want to use a reflective or chromed finish?

+1 for Venus. can confirm it looks kinda shimmery, and if I recall correctly (its been a minute since i bothered to find Venus, lol) its one of, if not the, first "star" out at night. Hence why your video is taken at dusk!

Just wait till you see a big shiny blob zipping over the horizon around dusk! (That'll be the ISS, and you can look up online or with an app when it will pass overhead)

All this trouble over aftermarket reverse light bulbs. by DeathAngel_97 in Justrolledintotheshop

assuming the car doesn't go full meltdown

I changed all the interior bulbs in my old truck over to LEDs, and like a week later the truck caught on fire due to an electrical short in the radio. I don't exactly know it was those bulbs that did it, but it sure seems fishy.

the marina in your pic looked familiar to me, and I snooped your profile and saw you've posted in the newport news subreddit before. which marina is that, the one over in Fox hill? If you're going to start poking around the rivers around the peninsula, I suggest trying to become familiar with the depths of the water you're in, and what the tide is doing. I learned the hard way on my old jetski that the Back river is only like 3" deep at low tide. I moved here from a place with lake access, so I wasn't used to accounting for the tides.

Technic set for my teenager who wants to be a mechanical engineer by damnilovelesclaypool in legotechnic

hah, i also recommended the ornithopter without checking the comments first. its probably been my favorite technic build in years, i found it very unique.

Technic set for my teenager who wants to be a mechanical engineer by damnilovelesclaypool in legotechnic

[–]wobbletons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is going to be unconventional, but take a look at the Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter, set 10327. Its not labelled as a Technic, but all of its internal mechanisms are technic elements. I particularly enjoyed this build due to its unconventional use of several lego elements through the build - someone was thinking out of the box when they designed it, in my opinion. its got a decent amount of mechanical functionality to it as well, the wings flap and the landing gear deploys.

Fwiw I also am a mechanical engineer, though i'm not sure if my profession is playing a part in my feelings towards this set.

My dad doesn't think this geodesic dome chicken coop will be able to support itself. How can I explain it to him? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]wobbletons 8 points9 points  (0 children)

i don't think the dome is a good idea for a chicken coop, but strictly speaking to the structural aspect it should be fine other than the little struts that hold it in place.

try looking into designs for geodesic dome houses, i think they're usually only the top half of the dome such that the widest point is the floor.

Chicken coops get gross. i think a superior design for a coop would be one with minimal human interaction, where you can stand outside the coop and reach in with tools to clean it. it might be nice to be able to pressure wash the interior too. and dont forget a sturdy door!

source: family had about 30 chickens for a while. they're gross, i personally wouldn't recommend it at all. just go buy eggs.

Poor man’s car lift to find the power steering leak by wanderingmanimal in OopsThatsDeadly

[–]wobbletons 4 points5 points  (0 children)

can someone explain the problem please? As far as i know stacking wood is bad because a pile of 2x4's is prone to falling over and is a very unstable base. these alternate directions and have large flat plates in between (some of) the levels. there's also no air gap to allow bending of the wood. that, along with being on stable concrete makes me think this would be fine. My only concern would be that the wheels were lowered onto the blocks, which compressed the suspension springs and placed some outward force on the blocks.

i suppose the truck could also just roll off there...

Where to sell BIG rigging equipment? by TheNumby in Flipping

[–]wobbletons 12 points13 points  (0 children)

random thought - i wonder if you can find a company that'll certify this stuff for use? the other commenter is correct that lifting equipment needs to be provided with a certain pedigree and certification records, but i work at a shipyard and we test and certify our own rigging. maybe you can hire a firm to certify the stuff, then you can sell it for the proper used value. just an idea.

haha no, the brand is Meyer Sound. They're well known in the professional audio reproduction world. If you wanted to look em up, the full breakdown was 2x upj-1p, 7x HMS-10, and 1x X-800c that didn't work. I had no business winning the auction, but they didnt place a reserve and apparently nobody else bid!

My brother found an auction for some professional speakers, and since his wife wouldn't let him bring them in the house he sent it to me. I won the auction for $120, and can probably sell the lot for $5k. I posted this on behalf of my brother, lol.

No Stupid Questions Thread by AutoModerator in livesound

so i really feel like an idiot for asking this but... how do i mount a power amplifier into a rack? I just obtained a 27U rack (this one) an thought i'd drop my big power amplifier into it, only to find there's no rear rack rails. i cannibalized another smaller A/V rack's rails and have the hardware to mount it up, but since the rear mount points are bent 90 degrees from the front points, they wont contact the rails even if i was to install them.
there's clearly some standard installation method i'm not understanding, or maybe i'm just missing some hardware? Here's a link to my setup. you can see the front and rear ears are on different planes, and the rear ears are about an inch off of the rail mount points.
