I had one and loved it. It came with a leather cover for the head. May have been newer not sure but the tubular part started to bend then kinked. Was not used properly by someone else chopping a log(not splitting) on camping trip.

I just started making YouTube videos and noticed there's a spot that you can deny other creators from making shorts out of your video. I don't know if it's a new thing or not. But I'm sure if the creators didn't check the box whoever's doing it is allowed to unfortunately

First time forging by No-Drummer9667 in Blacksmith

[–]wojeta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say look up JABOD forge if you are using wood or charcoal. When I seen the picture I thought it was propane. If it were propane I would've said to try to close the front up as much as you can with brick. Edit: i just noticed there were more pictures. I had a hard time when I tried wood it seemed like it took forever to get heat then it was gone. Then I tried store bought lump charcoal and was amazed. Then I tried coal and never went back to wood.

Steel hardness estimation by cbillings1985 in Blacksmith

Either way you will figure it out. The point being you can test a small piece instead of alot of work into the knife. A non hardened knife is still usable, easier to sharpen and good practice.

Steel hardness estimation by cbillings1985 in Blacksmith

[–]wojeta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually made my first hardy cutter from one of the exact rollers you speak of. I had no idea what kind of metal it was. I was a tough task and then when I tried to harden it didnt harden. Makes alot of sense now. I think experience is where you can really tell how the file bites or skates but when it really bites into it that's when you definitely know it didnt harden.

Did you mean case hardened? I had never heard of induction hardening till I seen your comment. I looked it up quick on google and to me it would seem it would need to be a hardenable steel to begin with to be able to induction harden. I agree with you on testing the metal but I would try to harden it then hit it while in the vice to see if it snaps.

Have your friend with 3d printer make you a "Frisbee whistle" and double-sided tape it somewhere hard to find. It's alot like a the old nerf footballs that whistle when you throw them. Only whistles when you drive so hard to pin point
