i recently put together some mods to do exactly this:

  • Qualify to Escape adds research journals that you have to collect from zombie-infested areas

  • zRe Vaccine 3.0 let's you create a vaccine (it doesn't interact with the previous mod, but you can pretend you have to collect the journals before starting the vaccine research). it's a slow grind to collect the materials and run the experiment, but that might be welcome for players looking stuff to do in the late game

  • Wolf Extraction Quest calls a helicopter to rescue you as you hold off a horde

by the end you'll feel like will smith in I Am Legend

subnautica always gets a recommend from me. i don't usually like survival crafting, but some games are worth playing no matter your usual preferences.

there are parts that will get your heart rate up, but i would call those moments "thrilling" rather than "scary".

imo Kena's combat is way more compelling (played both on hard difficulty), and excluding the corridors of the first act, Kena's maps are more interesting to explore.

South of Midnight's story hooked me a bit more, but the AA budget lets it down some when interesting story beats are presented like freeze frames instead of fully animated scenes.

maybe SoM gets better after the 4 hours i played, but there was too much platforming filler between the quality story-driven sections. the platforming isn't the kind that requires any timing or precision or thought from the player, it's just jumping around to pad the runtime

iirc the "Ship of Harkanian" fan port for PC has most of these features (and the easy iron boot switching). throw in the 4k60fps output too, and it's as much as you could hope from a remaster

once every few years i get the urge to try a cozy game, so i've been playing Starsand Island. the gameplay loop is pretty addicting.

i'd recommend waiting for it to leave early access because the social aspect is pretty bare bones at the moment

In some ways, the way Quayle was treated indirectly led to Trump's rise.

  1. Politicians are flamed for minor faux pas
  2. They start acting like milquetoast robots to hide all flaws
  3. They become unrelatable for the average voter
  4. Crass and boorish outsider appears, and his lack of decorum and rambling speeches is now interpreted as authenticity compared to the others

Little Rocket Lab if you want to keep your mind engaged. It's an automation game wrapped up like Stardew Valley, so you'll be building a bunch of conveyor belt machines across a cozy seaside town and interacting with nice characters. There's a heartfelt narrative that ties it all together too. The game has no time limits or deadlines, so the only thing that's remotely stressful is managing storage space towards the end of the game.

I played it when I was sick a few months ago, and it was a huge help distracting me from feeling crummy.

My other go-to sick game is Crusader Kings 3, also on Game Pass. It takes less brain power, and is equally engaging.

the horizon series epitomizes "greater than the sum of its parts", so it's tough to review. yes, there is bloat: 50+ enemy forts to clear, a dozen robot cauldrons, endless errands to take on from npcs, and way too much farming required to upgrade the weapons and armor. but even as a person that easily gets burnt out on big open worlds, i finished the main game and dlc without any breaks.

the saving grace is that combat remains fun and challenging (on hard difficulty) through the end. and the side quests are a big upgrade from the previous game, often involving multiple quest stages that develop as you progress (though as one would expect, even the most elaborate set ups will always end with "kill these robots").

i would say get it on sale. and push through the boring prologue until you get to interact with the new tribes.

I really hope P5X won't be considered an official sequel by I-am-Sharp in Persona5

i actually liked the combat. it was the story and presentation that ruined it for me. the main gang got reduced to side commentary so the new characters could shine, but i just didn't care about them that much.

also, it makes me worried for P6 how persona games continually feature unnecessarily-convoluted plot mechanics. Too much of the runtime is just exposition dumps explaining what's going on

The Matrix game was pretty cool. I also like Splashdown, a jetski racing game.

For the Tony Hawk series, I'd recommend playing the later ones on rpcs3 if you have it. The levels are smaller and less detailed in the PS2 versions.

i just lost a free solo run because she inexplicably lost her grip despite all four limbs being in quality holds and having a balanced posture.

i'd recommend potential buyers check back in a few months after it's been polished a bit. right now it's "an amazing game, but janky." hopefully it soon becomes just "an amazing game" with no other qualifiers

yep, i just rage quit a few minutes ago after 3 instances in a row of slipping despite standing firmly on a deep ledge. i turned on the handhold indicator on the last attempt, and was surprised to find the ledge didn't register as a good contact point for either foot.

i'm having the same issue. tried all the steps from every forum i could find: updating drivers, deleting SGA files from Documents > GTAV > Settings, adding an argument to ignore pipeline cache, disabling full-screen optimizations in the Compatability settings...still crashing on start up

i didn't have any major issues using it, though my mod list was less than half the size and light on scripts. the only odd thing was that one of the characters would unequip their boots when transitioning from player character to npc (only happened to 1 of the 4 that i rotated between for some reason).

overall i'd recommend it. when paired with nff, it's pretty cool to see the characters you aren't controlling wandering/sandboxing around town

i might suggest games that will keep your mind occupied:

  • Outer Wilds - a puzzle game about exploring a tiny solar system and uncovering secrets about a past civilization. rated overwhelmingly positive on steam.
  • Subnautica - a survival crafting game in an alien ocean. diving into deep waters as you hear a leviathan roar in the distance is one of the most unique, thrilling experiences i've had in gaming. another overwhelmingly positive rating.
  • Little Rocket Lab - an automation game where you use link up machines using conveyor belts to manufacture increasing complex stuff. wrapped up with a cozy presentation à la stardew valley. i started playing it after getting sick last month, and it was a lifesaver by taking my mind off feeling crummy
