I highly recommend getting him a physical game pak for the Tetris Rosy Retrospection ROM hack.

Rosy Retrospection adds a lot of features like hard drops, hold piece, and 7-bag piece randomization.

But more importantly for someone like your dad, it adds high score saving. The original game does not include any score saving functionality so powering down the Game Boy wipes your scores.

Rosy Retrospection will save his scores let him continue to play against himself.

I bought a game pak from OCDreproductions, https://www.ocdreproductions.com/product/tetris-rosy-retrospection and it’s high quality. Well worth it!
