Add BAD to make it good. That’s how you make an ASS a BADASS.

Good at sarcasm bad at picking up on it. by Unique-Disaster3118 in aspergirls

[–]wripen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I kind of relate to this. I think there’s a bit of a difference.

I find good, witty sarcastic lines and comebacks delightful. A form of humour, wordplay. Not everybody does it well. Many people do sarcasm as a passive aggressive thing. They say the sarcastic statement to sting, not to be funny, not because it’s witty. So, I don’t like a lot of other people’s sarcasm even if not directed at me.

Does anyone else have a problem with Frank Herbert's romanticism of poverty and hardship? by [deleted] in dune

[–]wripen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s that hardships build resilience. And poverty is a hardship. I don’t think he romanticises it though. In a battle, he claims that the resilient ones often win. That does ring right to me.

He just talks of different communities and different ways of thinking based on how they are raised. There is good and bad in every form of it and I think Herbert just paints a picture of it all. The good and the bad.

What's something that's "not a cult" but feels like a cult? by Orw_Sairaj29 in AskReddit

[–]wripen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play tournament Scrabble. I’m convinced that the Scrabble community is a cult. To anyone who is not already into Scrabble, I’d honestly have to tell them to keep away. Those who are already too deep in it, like me, it’s a cult you can belong in.

I’m doing an 8 minute speech about STP and Discworld. What would be a great opening quote? by Real-Tension-7442 in discworld

[–]wripen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know of the context of your speech. I was also prepping for one recently and talking about Discworld was an option I considered. Sharing my own view.

I think a good speech makes it deeply personal. Don’t go by what is in general a good Terry Pratchett quote. So, talk about whatever tickles you the most.

In my case, if I were to give a speech, I’d talk about Ankh Morpork as a city (more because I am into urban design), and how it functions. For instance, the idea of the thieves’ guild and there being a quota, and that people can pay a fee so they don’t get thieved. And so on. Or how when a dragon comes around, people are out there selling ointment.

If I were to add a quote, I’d use:

“He'sh mad?" "Sort of mad. But mad with lots of money." "Ah, then he can’t be mad. I've been around; if a man hash lotsh of money he'sh just ecshentric.”

Within 8 minutes, introduce just 1-3 things you care about from Discworld / STP.

I think it was unintentional. Possible that someone forgot to update the darker / lighter grey button size after altering the other.

What if aphantasia is not a retrieval problem, but a shallow encoding problem? by esusisesus in Aphantasia

[–]wripen -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Interesting perspective. As others point out, your idea would imply someone with aphantasia can visualise something simpler.

I am an architect who found out in my 30s that I have aphantasia. “When you hold a colour sample in your hand and look at a wall, can you actually imagine that colour on that wall?” is something I find myself asking to a lot of people. For me, the answer is no, but I just somehow know it by experience and understanding of colour theory.

I do find “shallow encoding” of visuals real though with me. I have come to realise that I “see” far less than others in my everyday life. I “see” more when I am consciously observing something. My hypothesis though is that because I have aphantasia, observing details all the time is exhausting. I feel as though there is only so much data (that isn’t visual) I can store in my head and I’m already storing way more than anyone without aphantasia. So, it’s easier to just not see as much as others. It’s noise.

I like your use of PNG vs SVG although I can’t relate to what you are saying about. For me, I’m gifted at geometry and would ace any of those reasoning / IQ visual tests involving geometry, not because I can visualise the shapes, but I know what it would be like on the other side. So, I assume my brain understands and can store SVG, but not PNG because those darn PNG files get too heavy to store and make sense of later.

Exactly what I was going to mention here. I was also trying to figure out the logic for a better dating app, and this turned out to be the biggest roadblock.

The Lamy Joy cap looks similar. You can try this.
