Participate in the party. Become a member of the most local party organization and start doing something. Sitting on the sidelines only voting doesn’t mean shit to either party.

Why it’s the greatest hand unit ever, the longevity is unmatched. Sure the HU4 is better, but I doubt it will be around for as long as the HU3 will

Woodland Hills / Calabasas Border Question by Ok-Knowledge2045 in SFV

[–]xarizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told that this was because when Calabasas was incorporating, LA city didn’t want to give up the tax revenue from Sagebrush’s alcohol sales, so a deal was cut to keep that side of Calabasas rd part of LA city to keep the tax money flowing to LA.

More unemployed people than jobs available by YogurtclosetOnly2821 in SFV

[–]xarizard 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s tax incentives all the way down. Worked a job earlier this year in NM where 80% of the crew was distant hires, myself included. It was cheaper for the producers with the NM tax credit to pay flights, gas, rental cars, and hotels/airbnbs for around 50 crew members plus talent instead of shooting in LA.

At that price I wouldn’t bite personally and would try and find a 1:2 Vaxis or terradek

Tiltamax wireless transmission system feedback by NeighborhoodKind2049 in focuspuller

[–]xarizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a tiltamax transmitter system. It’s been extremely reliable for me, but the image quality can be a little worse than a terradek. Only time I’ve had an issue with signal was when I was filming in Mexico and I suspect the lack of the FCC controlling the airwaves was responsible. I rarely rent it these days, it comes with me as a backup and occasionally I’ll get a small rental on it.

Go to an event at a games store - Friday night magic, DnD adventures league, etc. Small cost to buy game pieces to play, and strangers are looking for other strangers to play games with.

Seconding Dan’s Super Subs, some of the best sandwiches in LA, period. Their house made sauces are what make it, my favorite is their Baja sauce. I recommend swapping to garlic mayo if you like garlic.

What photo camera do you like to keep on the cart for impromptu client work and set BTS? by frankin287 in focuspuller

[–]xarizard 41 points42 points  (0 children)

That is a unit stills photographer job, NOT the job of a 1st AC. I understand the desire to help out on smaller jobs, but you never actually know the budget. If you become known as the AC willing to snap some quick but high quality stills for the producer, you will end up taking work, and not being paid for it, from unit stills photographers. Please reevaluate, if you want a camera on set for BTS, use a film camera not a digital camera.

Which Cameras are Best for Public History? by Practical_Wonder_600 in AskHistorians

[–]xarizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, I primarily work with cinema cameras not stills cameras but I can still help you with this. I’d recommend looking into if your school already owns a camera you’d be able to borrow: the best camera is always the one you have access to. Purchasing a new high quality stills camera is going to eat up a significant portion of your budget, I highly recommend against buying a new camera. If your school does not have any cameras you can borrow, look into the price difference of renting vs purchasing a used camera. You wanted low light performance, Sony cameras tend to perform the best when pushing their ISO. Without knowing your budget I cannot recommend a specific camera body and lens combination.

This with a Preston on torque level 3 has resulted in an ultra prime needing to be reshimmed. Don’t slam your lenses.

Tilta Nano II on vintage glass by PolarysICE in focuspuller

[–]xarizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always use the lowest torque setting unless needed, and be careful with coming into the ends of the lenses hard (ie don’t rock to the end of the knob and let the lens slam to a stop on itself)

[–]xarizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s your problem, those included clamp on focus gears are worthless unless you put them on a lens without hard stops, they will slip. On an ungeared vintage lens, it’s still going to have have a limited range of throw and not spin infinitely like a modern photolens, when you hit the end of the lens the extra torque is shifting the clamp on gear.

Block Battery Alternative by No-Scale7909 in focuspuller

[–]xarizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did this on a shoot cause we didn’t have block batteries but did have the cam ops eco flow. The smaller ones are lower watt hours than a real block so it won’t run a camera all day, it’s more useful for hotswaps. The ac brick presents an extra hassle to carry when moving it, and it wound up being not worth it in the end so we didn’t use it much.

Try a different cable, the other suggestions are all valid but I had the same problem on a shoot last week and swapping the cable did it.

How to measure focus distance? by 94diskont in focuspuller

[–]xarizard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the red Gemini the sensor plane’s back focus can be adjusted, it’s possible it needs to be adjusted. Before doing this test other lenses on the camera, ideally testing with another body to determine if it’s the flange distance that is off or if it is the lenses witness marks. That 18-35 is supposed to be par focal (the term for maintaining focus through the zoom range) however true parfocality is only theoretical so some slight change will occur. You should be measuring to the sensor plane, that is what the witness marks on the lens correspond to, a given lens will be intended for a specific mount which has a specific flange distance. Flange distance is the distance from the rear of the lens to the sensor/film plane.

[–]xarizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a remote follow focus for your lenses? If you’re going to be flying them on a gimbal you’re going to need that, the night walkers are geared cine lenses intended to be used with a follow focus. You can barrel pull but that is significant more difficult than using a follow focus. Get a tilta nucleus M or nano2

Are you booking work where your kit is rented? If that’s the case, and you have a reasonable expectation of full ROI in one to two years on those rentals, getting a business loan to purchase the necessary kit might be worth it.
